Chapter 9: The Last Lie
The search for Richard Voss lasted three days.
Three days of locked doors.
Three days of interviews.
Three days of discovering how deep the corruption went.
But Cole knew something nobody else did.
Richard wasn’t running.
He was waiting.
People like Richard didn’t disappear.
They returned when they wanted to hurt someone.
And Cole knew exactly who that someone would be.
Maya.
They moved her to a secure location.
An old house outside the city.
Quiet.
Hidden.
Safe.
At least, that was what everyone hoped.
Cole sat on the porch watching the sunrise.
Maya joined him.
She held a notebook.
She wrote something.
Then handed it to him.
I thought you hated me.
Cole looked at her.
His chest tightened.
“Why would you think that?””
She wrote:
Because you looked sad when you saw me.
Cole swallowed.
He had spent years hiding his pain.
But children always saw what adults tried to bury.
“I wasn’t sad because of you.””
She waited.
“I was sad because I missed you.””
Maya looked down.
Then wrote:
I missed you too.
Cole closed his eyes.
A father meeting his daughter at the wrong time.
A family rebuilding after being destroyed.
It wasn’t supposed to happen like this.
A car engine interrupted them.
Cole immediately stood.
A vehicle approached.
Not police.
Not familiar.
He moved Maya behind him.
The car stopped.
The door opened.
Emma stepped out.
Cole relaxed slightly.
Then stopped.
Because Emma looked terrified.
“What happened?””
She walked closer.
“I found something.””
Daniel came outside.
“What?””
Emma held a folder.
“I found the last piece.””
Cole took it.
Inside was one photograph.
Old.
Damaged.
It showed Cole.
Daniel.
Emma.
And another person.
Cole stared.
He recognized everyone.
Except one.
A child.
A baby.
Daniel looked at the picture.
His face changed.
“No.””
Cole looked at him.
“What?””
Daniel whispered:
“There were two children.””
The world stopped.
Emma nodded.
“I never told you.””
Cole felt cold.
“Maya had a twin.””
Silence.
Daniel sat down.
“Richard took her.””
Maya stepped back.
Cole looked at her.
A twin.
A sister.
Another child lost to the same monster.
Emma cried.
“I thought she was dead.””
Daniel looked at the photo.
“But she wasn’t.””
A phone rang.
Everyone froze.
It wasn’t theirs.
It was Maya’s.
The little girl looked confused.
She reached into her backpack.
Cole stared.
“The backpack.””
The same backpack she had carried into the diner.
The one nobody had searched.
Maya pulled out an old phone.
Not hers.
Someone had hidden it there.
A message appeared.
A single video.
From Richard.
Cole grabbed it.
Richard’s face appeared.
“You’re closer than you think.””
Cole’s hands tightened.
Richard smiled.
“The final truth isn’t about Maya.””
He looked into the camera.
“It’s about the person protecting her.””
Everyone went silent.
Richard continued:
“Ask Cole why he never remembered the night Maya disappeared.””
Cole froze.
The video ended.
Nobody spoke.
Daniel looked at him.
“What does he mean?””
Cole felt something crack inside his memory.
A night.
A fire.
A scream.
A promise.
A promise he had forgotten.
Emma whispered:
“Cole?””
He stepped back.
Because suddenly he remembered.
He had been there.
Twelve years ago.
He hadn’t lost Maya.
He had saved her.
May you like
But someone had erased his memory.
And that someone was standing in front of him.
