Chapter 5: The Name on the File

The diner became a crime scene before sunrise.

Police cars surrounded the building.

Yellow tape stretched across the entrance.

But Cole barely noticed any of it.

He sat at the same booth where he had been drinking coffee hours earlier.

Except now the coffee was cold.

And his entire past had been ripped open.

Daniel sat across from him.

Older.

Broken.

Alive.

Maya sat beside Tasha, watching them carefully.

Like she was afraid either man might disappear again.

Reynolds placed a folder on the table.

“We checked the records.””

Cole looked up.

“And?””

The officer hesitated.

“Daniel Voss officially died twelve years ago.””

Daniel nodded.

“Because Victor made sure everyone believed it.””

Reynolds opened the folder.

“There’s more.””

He slid a document forward.

Cole looked at it.

His stomach tightened.

It was a list.

Names.

Dates.

Locations.

Every person connected to Daniel’s old investigation.

Most names had a red mark beside them.

Dead.

Cole looked at Daniel.

“What was this?””

Daniel looked at Maya.

“Insurance.””

Cole frowned.

“Against what?””

Daniel leaned forward.

“Against the day Victor decided to erase us.””

A sound came from the entrance.

Everyone turned.

Marcus stood there.

The police had cleared him.

But his face looked different.

Guilty.

Cole noticed.

“You knew.””

Marcus looked down.

“I didn’t know everything.””

“Your brother was alive.””

Marcus swallowed.

“Daniel contacted me years ago.””

Cole stood.

“You let him hide here?””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

“Then why?””

Marcus looked toward Maya.

“Because your daughter was never supposed to be involved.””

Cole stopped.

“My daughter?””

The words came out before he could control them.

Everyone went quiet.

Daniel looked away.

Cole stared.

“Maya is my daughter?””

Daniel nodded.

“She was always yours.””

The revelation hit harder than any weapon.

Cole looked at Maya.

The little girl who had run into the diner.

The girl who had trusted him before she even knew who he was.

His voice cracked.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Daniel’s eyes filled with regret.

“Because Victor would have killed her.””

Cole stepped back.

All the years.

All the searching.

All the anger.

All the nights wondering why Daniel abandoned his family.

It had never been abandonment.

It had been protection.

Then Reynolds’s phone rang.

He answered.

His face changed.

“What?””

Everyone watched.

The officer slowly lowered the phone.

“We found Victor Hale.””

Cole froze.

“Where?””

Reynolds looked at Maya.

“He’s outside.””

The lights flickered.

Again.

Daniel stood instantly.

“No.””

Cole looked toward the window.

A black vehicle was parked outside.

Different from the truck.

But the same feeling.

Someone was watching.

Reynolds reached for his weapon.

“How did he know we were here?””

Nobody answered.

Then Maya slowly walked toward the glass.

Her face became pale.

Cole moved beside her.

“What is it?””

She pointed.

Not at the car.

Not at Victor.

At the person sitting in the passenger seat.

A woman.

A woman Cole knew.

A woman he had buried twelve years ago.

Daniel whispered behind him:

“Cole…”

Cole couldn’t breathe.

Because the woman in the car looked exactly the same as the day she disappeared.

And she was holding a document with one name printed across the top.

Maya’s real birth record.
