Chapter 6: The Woman in the Car

Cole had spent twelve years believing he understood what loss felt like.

He was wrong.

Loss was a grave.

Loss was a funeral.

Loss was a final goodbye whispered into cold earth.

But this was something else.

This was the past opening its eyes and looking back at him.

The woman sitting in Victor Hale’s car stared through the diner window.

She looked exactly the same.

Same dark hair.

Same sharp eyes.

Same small scar near her eyebrow.

A scar Cole remembered touching when they were young and reckless enough to believe nothing could hurt them.

His hand slowly lowered from the window.

“No.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Cole?””

He couldn’t answer.

Because his mind was fighting itself.

The woman in the car couldn’t exist.

But she did.

Maya stepped closer.

She looked at Cole.

Then at the woman.

Then she signed one word.

“Mom?””

The entire room went silent.

Cole felt the ground disappear beneath him.

Daniel closed his eyes.

Marcus whispered, “That’s impossible.””

Cole turned toward him.

“That’s what I said.””

The woman in the car opened the door.

Victor Hale stepped out first.

Older.

Gray hair.

Expensive suit.

The same confident posture of a man who had spent his life believing consequences were for other people.

He walked toward the entrance.

The police officers immediately raised their weapons.

“Stop right there,” Reynolds ordered.

Victor smiled.

“Officer, I’m not here to cause trouble.””

Cole stared at him.

“You’re the trouble.””

Victor’s eyes moved toward him.

For a brief second, something like regret appeared.

Then it vanished.

“Still angry after all these years?””

Cole laughed once.

A cold sound.

“You erased my life.””

Victor looked past him.

At Daniel.

“You’re alive.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You sound disappointed.””

Victor sighed.

“This was never supposed to happen.””

Cole’s voice sharpened.

“What wasn’t supposed to happen? Daniel surviving? My daughter finding me?””

Victor looked at Maya.

And that was when Cole noticed something.

Victor wasn’t looking at Maya like an enemy.

He was looking at her like a mistake.

A mistake he had failed to erase.

The woman from the car stepped forward.

“Victor.””

Everyone turned.

Her voice was softer than Cole remembered.

But it was her.

It was really her.

Cole couldn’t move.

The woman looked at him.

“Cole.””

That one word broke something inside him.

Because after twelve years, he finally heard her voice again.

“Emma.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I’m sorry.””

Cole shook his head.

“No.””

He stepped back.

“No, you don’t get to say that.””

The diner went quiet.

Emma looked down.

“I know.””

“You died.””

“I know.””

“I buried you.””

Her face twisted with pain.

“I know.””

Cole’s hands clenched.

“Then tell me how you’re standing here.””

Emma looked toward Victor.

And for the first time, Victor looked afraid.

“She needs to tell you herself.””

Cole frowned.

“Who?””

Emma looked at Maya.

The little girl who had spent her entire life believing both parents were gone.

Then Emma whispered:

“The reason I disappeared.””

Maya stared.

Emma slowly walked closer.

Reynolds watched carefully.

“You’re saying this woman is Maya’s mother?””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

Reynolds looked overwhelmed.

“I’m going to need a much bigger report.””

Nobody laughed.

Emma knelt in front of Maya.

The girl didn’t move.

She simply stared.

Emma lifted her hands.

And signed.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Maya’s face changed.

Her lips trembled.

She understood.

The first sign.

The second.

The third.

Then suddenly, Maya stepped forward.

She touched Emma’s face.

Like she was checking if she was real.

Emma broke down.

“I wanted to come back.””

Maya signed something.

Emma cried harder.

Cole watched them.

And somehow that hurt more than anger.

Because he had spent twelve years hating ghosts.

Now his ghosts were standing in front of him.

Alive.

Victor cleared his throat.

“We don’t have time for this.””

Cole turned.

“You don’t get to speak.””

Victor ignored him.

“You need to understand what’s coming.””

Daniel narrowed his eyes.

“What did you do?””

Victor looked at the folder on the table.

“The documents you found?””

Nobody answered.

Victor continued.

“They were never protection.””

Daniel froze.

“What?””

“They were bait.””

The room changed.

Cole looked at Daniel.

Daniel looked confused.

Victor smiled sadly.

“You really thought you were hiding from me?””

Emma stepped back.

“What are you saying?””

Victor looked at her.

“I’m saying the person you should have been afraid of was never me.””

A cold silence followed.

Reynolds stepped closer.

“Then who?””

Victor looked toward the parking lot.

Toward the road beyond.

A second black vehicle had stopped.

Someone was getting out.

Cole watched the figure approach.

Tall.

Slow.

Confident.

Victor whispered:

“The person who funded everything.””

Daniel’s face went pale.

“No.””

Cole looked at him.

“You know him?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

Because the approaching man stepped into the light.

And Cole recognized him.

The man who had started everything.

The man whose name was written nowhere.

The man even Victor Hale feared.

Daniel whispered:

May you like

“Richard Voss.””

His own father.
