Amused

Chapter 7: The DNA Test That Changed Everything

For several seconds, Marcus couldn't bring himself to look at Aaliyah.

The laboratory report lay between them, its thin pages trembling in his hands.

M. Cole.

His name.

Not Robert's. Not Adrian's.

His.

Aaliyah watched the man who had raised her struggle to understand a document that might rewrite the entire history of their family.

“Marcus,” she whispered, “what does it mean?””

He swallowed.

“I don't know yet.””

“Then let's find out.””

Denise shook her head violently.

“No. This is getting out of control.””

Aaliyah turned toward her.

“You said that when I tried to open the envelope. You said it when I asked about Adrian. You said it when I asked why you lied about the hospital bill.””

Her voice trembled, but she didn't stop.

“Every time I get close to an answer, you tell me to stop asking questions. I'm done stopping.””

Denise gripped the back of the chair.

“I am trying to protect you.””

“From what?””

Her mother looked at Marcus.

That small movement told Aaliyah more than any confession could have.

“From him?”” Aaliyah asked.

Marcus lifted his head.

“Your mother doesn't need to protect you from me.””

“Then why does she keep looking at you?””

Marcus didn't answer.

Robert reached across the table and took the report.

“Give me that.””

Marcus held on to it.

“Don't.””

Robert pulled harder.

“I'm not going to destroy it.””

“That's not what I'm worried about.””

The two men stared at each other.

Daniel stepped between them.

“Gentlemen, we're not doing this. Not in front of her.””

Robert released the paper.

Marcus smoothed its bent corner and placed it on the table.

“We need a qualified professional to explain these results,” he said.

“This document is old, and we don't know who collected the sample or what the laboratory actually tested.””

Aaliyah nodded.

“Then call the laboratory.””

Marcus looked at the report again.

“The laboratory may not still have the records.””

“Call anyway.””

He took out his phone.

While he searched for the laboratory's current contact information, Robert paced toward the windows. He stopped beside a towering arrangement of white roses and adjusted one of the flowers that had slipped out of place.

The gesture was strangely ordinary.

Aaliyah remembered watching Marcus do the same thing when she was little. He would straighten picture frames in other people's houses, tighten loose screws on restaurant chairs, and fix crooked decorations without anyone asking.

For years, she had found the habit endearing.

Now she wondered how many things she had mistaken for simple kindness because she had never known what lay underneath them.

Marcus found a number and placed the call.

After several minutes of explaining the report, he handed the phone to Aaliyah.

“It's a records specialist. She needs to speak to you because your name appears on the document.””

Aaliyah took the phone.

“This is Aaliyah Cole.””

A woman introduced herself as Ms. Patterson and asked Aaliyah to confirm the report number.

Aaliyah read it aloud.

There was a pause.

Then the woman asked, “Are you currently with Marcus Cole?””

“Yes.””

“Is he the person identified as M. Cole on the accompanying paperwork?””

Aaliyah looked at him.

“Yes.””

“I need to be careful about what I disclose over the telephone. However, I can confirm that the report number corresponds to a historical family relationship assessment. It was not issued as a conventional paternity report.””

Aaliyah's stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?””

“It means the report was part of a broader evaluation involving multiple family members. The copy you have may not include the original interpretation or the consent forms.””

“Can you tell me whose samples were tested?””

“I can confirm that the archived record references samples from three adults and one child.””

Aaliyah gripped the phone.

“Which adults?””

“I'm sorry. We cannot release those details until identity verification and authorization are completed.””

“I'm the child listed on the report.””

“I understand, Ms. Cole. But the record contains information about other people, too.””

Aaliyah closed her eyes.

“Can I get the full record today?””

“Not today. We will need to verify your identity and review the archival file. I can send you instructions for making a formal request.””

“How long will it take?””

“Usually five to ten business days, depending on the condition of the records.””

Aaliyah exhaled shakily.

“Please send the instructions.””

After she ended the call, she placed the phone on the table.

“Five to ten business days.””

Marcus nodded.

“We can wait.””

“No,” Aaliyah said.

“We can request the records. But I'm not spending another decade waiting for someone to decide when I'm allowed to know my own story.””

She looked at her mother.

“Is there anything else?””

Denise's eyes filled.

“Aaliyah—”

“Anything else that might explain why my name is on a report with Marcus's?””

Denise opened her mouth.

Then she closed it.

Robert stopped pacing.

“I think I know what happened.””

Every face turned toward him.

Marcus's expression hardened.

“Don't speculate.””

Robert ignored him.

“Adrian told me something before he died. Something I didn't understand at the time.””

Aaliyah stepped toward him.

“What?””

Robert rubbed his palms together.

“He said that if I ever wanted to know whether I had made the right decision about leaving you, I should look at the hospital records from the year you were born.””

Marcus went still.

“What exactly did he say?””

Robert looked at him.

“He said, 'The answer was there before either of us knew what the question was.''”

Denise covered her mouth.

Marcus slowly sat down.

Aaliyah stared at him.

“You recognize that sentence.””

He nodded.

“Adrian used to say things like that.””

“You knew him?””

“I met him several times.””

Robert gave a bitter laugh.

“You met him more than several times.””

Marcus looked up sharply.

Robert continued, “You were in contact with him for years, weren't you?””

Marcus didn't answer.

Aaliyah felt her heart begin to race.

“Dad?””

Marcus rubbed his face.

“I was.””

The admission was quiet, but it seemed to shake the entire room.

“How long?””

“From the time you were three until shortly before he died.””

Aaliyah stepped backward.

“You knew him for years, and you never told me?””

“He contacted me because he wanted to know how you were doing.””

“Why didn't he contact me?””

“He believed your mother wasn't ready. And I thought it was best to respect her wishes.””

Aaliyah stared at him.

“Did he ever ask to see me?””

“Yes.””

“How many times?””

Marcus looked down.

“Several.””

“And you said no?””

“Not every time.””

“What does that mean?””

Marcus's jaw tightened.

“It means I told him he couldn't come into your life without being honest about who he was and what he wanted.””

“He wanted to know his daughter!””

Marcus flinched.

Aaliyah immediately regretted the words, but she couldn't take them back.

Robert stepped forward.

“You see? That's what I've been trying to tell you. Marcus didn't just happen to become your father. He made himself the only father you knew.””

Marcus rose.

“I made myself available to a little girl whose biological father had abandoned her.””

“You also made decisions for her.””

“Yes,” Marcus said.

“I did. And I regret some of them.””

His answer silenced Robert.

Marcus looked at Aaliyah.

“I should have told you that Adrian was trying to contact you. I should have trusted you with more of the truth as you grew older. I told myself I was protecting you, but some of it was fear.””

“What were you afraid of?””

He took a long breath.

“Losing you.””

Aaliyah's eyes filled.

“You could never have lost me by telling me the truth.””

Marcus looked at the wedding dress, then at the envelope on the table.

“I know that now.””

Before she could answer, Denise suddenly stood.

“We need to stop.””

Aaliyah turned toward her.

“No.””

“You don't understand what you're opening up.””

“Then explain it!””

Denise's shoulders shook.

“I can't.””

Robert slammed his briefcase shut.

“Then I will.””

He pulled out another document, one that had been tucked into a separate compartment.

“This was in Adrian's attorney's file. I received it with the trust paperwork.””

Marcus looked at the heading.

His face went white.

“Where did you get that?””

“From the attorney.””

“Why didn't you show it to me?””

“Because I wanted to see whether you would tell her the truth yourself.””

Marcus stared at him.

Robert placed the document in front of Aaliyah.

It was a copy of an application for a paternity assessment, dated shortly after her birth.

The names listed were Robert Hale, Denise Cole, and Adrian Bennett.

But there was a handwritten amendment at the bottom.

Additional comparison sample requested: Marcus Cole.

Aaliyah read the words twice.

“Why would they need your sample?””

Marcus didn't move.

Robert answered.

“Because Adrian wasn't the only person who questioned your parentage.””

Aaliyah turned toward her mother.

Denise was crying so hard she could barely stand.

“Mom?””

Denise shook her head.

“Please don't make me say it.””

Aaliyah felt something inside her break.

“Say what?””

Denise looked directly at her daughter.

Then, in a voice so faint that Aaliyah almost didn't hear it, she said, “There was a time when I wasn't sure which of the three men was your father.””

The silence that followed was absolute.

Aaliyah looked at Robert.

Then at Adrian's name.

Finally, she looked at Marcus.

The man who had taught her to ride a bicycle. The man who had held her hand through every fever, every heartbreak, every disappointment.

The man she had just asked to walk her down the aisle.

“Are you telling me,” she whispered, “that you might actually be my biological father?””

Marcus's eyes glistened.

“I don't know, sweetheart.””

For the first time that afternoon, he reached for her hand without hesitation.

“But whatever that report says, I know I was there when you needed me.””

Aaliyah let him hold her hand.

Then she looked at the old document again.

There were four names on the page.

And beneath them, a final handwritten note:

*Final results to be delivered privately to Denise Cole.*

Aaliyah slowly raised her eyes.

“Mom, where are the final results?””

Denise's lips trembled.

She looked at Marcus.

Then she looked at Robert.

May you like

And finally, she whispered the answer that changed the room.

“I burned them.””
