Amused

Chapter 6: The Inheritance Nobody Wanted

For a moment, Aaliyah couldn't understand what she was looking at.

The numbers blurred together. The words seemed to shift across the page.

She read the amount again.

Then once more.

“Is this real?””

Robert nodded.

“Yes.””

“How much money is this?””

“It's the trust Adrian established for you. The value has increased over the years.””

Aaliyah looked at the figure.

It was enough to buy a house outright. Enough to pay off student loans, invest in a business, or provide security for the family she and Daniel had planned to start.

It was more money than she had ever imagined inheriting.

But the amount wasn't what frightened her.

It was the fact that someone had created an entire financial future for her while she had grown up believing that the man had barely existed.

“Why would Adrian leave me this?””

Robert pulled out a chair.

“Because he wanted to make sure you had choices.””

“What choices?””

“He knew your mother had struggled financially. He knew I had failed you. He wanted to leave something that could make your life easier.””

Aaliyah's eyes narrowed.

“Then why does the bank need confirmation of biological parentage?””

Robert hesitated.

“Because the trust was established under a legal agreement that required proof of your relationship to Adrian.””

“Did he think he was my father?””

“He believed he might be.””

Aaliyah looked at Denise.

“Did you tell him?””

Denise shook her head.

“I never told him he was your father. I told him there was a possibility.””

“Did he ever ask for a paternity test?””

“No.””

“Why not?””

“Because he said he didn't want to turn you into a question that adults argued over.””

Aaliyah looked down at the trust document.

For years, she had believed her biological father was Robert. She had never questioned it because her mother had insisted there was no reason to question it.

Now there was a third man, dead for eleven years, who had helped save her life and left her an inheritance.

And nobody could tell her with certainty whether he was her father.

“Does the bank need Robert's DNA?”” she asked.

Robert shook his head.

“Not necessarily. They can use other records, but they need definitive evidence of the biological relationship. They sent me a letter asking for information. I contacted Denise.””

Aaliyah turned to her mother.

“You knew about the trust?””

Denise nodded.

“How long?””

“Since Adrian died.””

Aaliyah stared at her.

“You knew there was money waiting for me?””

“I knew he had made arrangements. I didn't know how much the trust was worth.””

“And you didn't tell me?””

“I was afraid.””

“Of the money?””

“Of what the money would mean. Of what you might discover if you started asking questions.””

Aaliyah let out a slow breath.

“You let me work two jobs in college.””

Denise's eyes filled.

“Yes.””

“You watched me cry because I couldn't afford to take a semester off when I was exhausted.””

“I know.””

“You knew there might be a trust waiting for me, and you let me believe I had nothing.””

Denise covered her face.

“I thought the money might never be released. I didn't want you to build your hopes around something uncertain.””

“You could have told me that!””

“I know.””

Aaliyah stepped away from the table.

“I don't understand how you could make that decision for me.””

Denise had no answer.

Marcus picked up the trust document and read it carefully.

“There's something missing.””

Robert looked at him.

“What?””

“The document says the funds can be released after confirmation of biological parentage. It doesn't say Aaliyah must prove Adrian was her father.””

Robert frowned.

“What's the difference?””

“The difference is that the trust may have been written to protect her regardless of the outcome. We need to read the entire agreement.””

Aaliyah looked at him.

“You can tell that from one page?””

“No. But I know enough about contracts to know that one page rarely tells the whole story.””

For the first time that afternoon, Marcus sounded like himself again. Calm. Practical. The man who could look at a broken machine and immediately begin figuring out how to repair it.

Aaliyah felt an ache in her chest.

She had missed that steadiness while standing in the middle of her own anger.

Robert slid the folder toward Marcus.

“The full agreement is in there.””

Marcus opened it.

He read the first page, then the second.

His expression gradually changed.

“What is it?”” Aaliyah asked.

Marcus didn't answer immediately.

He turned to the final page and studied the signature at the bottom.

Then he looked at Denise.

“You signed this.””

Denise's face drained of color.

“Yes.””

Aaliyah moved closer.

“What did she sign?””

Marcus handed her the document.

The heading read:

*Conditional Trust and Beneficiary Protection Agreement.*

She scanned the paragraphs, struggling to make sense of the legal language.

One section stated that Adrian had established a trust for the benefit of Aaliyah, regardless of whether he was ultimately confirmed as her biological father.

Another section required the trustees to preserve the assets until the beneficiary reached the age of twenty-eight or until a biological relationship was established through legally acceptable evidence.

Aaliyah looked up.

“So the money is mine either way?””

Marcus shook his head.

“Not necessarily. We need a lawyer to interpret the whole agreement.””

He pointed to a paragraph near the bottom.

“But this section is important. It says the trust cannot be revoked by your mother, Robert, or me.””

Aaliyah stared at the page.

“Why would Adrian need to write that?””

Robert rubbed his forehead.

“Because he was afraid someone would try to interfere.””

“Who?””

Nobody spoke.

Aaliyah looked at the signatures.

Adrian Bennett.

Denise Cole.

Robert Hale.

And a fourth signature.

*Marcus Cole.*

She turned toward him.

“You signed this, too?””

Marcus looked genuinely confused.

He studied the page, then shook his head.

“I signed a witness acknowledgment when Denise delivered the documents. I did not agree to control the trust.””

Robert leaned forward.

“The agreement says all four parties were present when it was signed.””

Marcus looked at the date.

His expression changed.

“That isn't possible.””

Denise began to cry again.

Aaliyah stared at her.

“Why?””

Marcus held up the document.

“Because I was in Chicago that week. I attended a training conference. I have the travel records.””

Robert's face hardened.

“Are you saying the signature is forged?””

“I'm saying I didn't sign this agreement on that date.””

Aaliyah looked at her mother.

“Mom?””

Denise shook her head, tears falling onto her burgundy dress.

“I didn't forge anything.””

“Then how did your name get here?””

“I don't know.””

Marcus examined the page more closely.

The signature looked like his. The capital M had the same long first stroke, and the final letter curved upward in the same way he had always signed his name.

But something about the date bothered him.

He looked at Robert.

“When did Adrian die?””

“Eleven years ago.””

“And when was this agreement signed?””

Robert checked the document.

“Twelve years ago.””

Marcus's eyes narrowed.

“That means this was signed before Adrian died.””

“Yes.””

“Then why did the bank send you the release notice only three weeks ago?””

Robert hesitated.

“Because the trust was structured to remain active until Aaliyah turned twenty-eight.””

Aaliyah stared at the date.

Her twenty-eighth birthday had been four months earlier.

“So someone waited until my birthday to contact you.””

Robert nodded.

“That's what happened.””

“Who contacted you?””

“A woman from the trust administration office. She said they needed updated beneficiary information and confirmation of your parentage.””

Aaliyah looked at the letter.

“Did you tell her about Adrian?””

“Yes.””

“Did you tell her I didn't know any of this?””

Robert looked ashamed.

“I did.””

“And what did she say?””

“That she couldn't discuss the trust with me unless I provided evidence of the relationship.””

Aaliyah's fingers tightened around the paper.

“So you called me because you wanted to help me access the money?””

Robert flinched.

“I called because you deserved to know.””

“That's not what I asked.””

He looked down.

“The money was part of the reason.””

The admission hurt, but at least it was honest.

Aaliyah nodded slowly.

“Thank you for telling me the truth.””

Robert looked surprised.

She continued, “I don't forgive you. But I appreciate that you finally answered a question without pretending the answer was something else.””

Robert's eyes filled.

“I understand.””

“No, you don't. But perhaps you will someday.””

She turned to Marcus.

“I need to know whether Adrian was my father.””

Marcus nodded.

“Then we find out.””

Denise rose.

“Aaliyah, please. Before you do anything, you need to understand what happened after Adrian died.””

Aaliyah closed her eyes.

Another secret.

Another locked door.

She almost told her mother to stop.

But then she saw the fear in Denise's face.

Not the fear of being caught in a lie.

The fear of what the truth might do to her daughter.

“What happened?”” Aaliyah asked.

Denise reached into her handbag and removed a small, sealed packet.

“I received this six months after the funeral. It was sent by Adrian's attorney.””

Aaliyah took it.

The packet contained a letter, a photocopy of a medical report, and a small envelope marked *DNA RESULTS — PRIVATE*.

Her heart began to pound.

She opened the medical report first.

It contained Adrian's name and a diagnosis of an aggressive form of cancer.

Beneath it was a handwritten note.

The patient has requested that all communications regarding his biological family be directed through legal counsel.

Aaliyah looked at the DNA envelope.

It had been opened before.

She turned toward her mother.

“Did you read this?””

Denise nodded.

“Yes.””

“What did it say?””

Denise's lips trembled.

“I didn't understand all of it.””

“Mom!””

“I was frightened! Adrian was dead. Robert had disappeared again. Marcus was trying to hold our family together, and I couldn't bear the thought of losing everything a second time.””

Aaliyah tore open the envelope.

Inside was a laboratory report.

She scanned the first paragraph, then the second.

Her eyes moved to the final page.

*Probability of biological paternity: 99.98%.*

For a moment, she heard nothing.

Not Daniel calling her name.

Not Robert whispering something under his breath.

Not even the faint sound of music from the reception area.

She stared at the result until the numbers blurred.

Adrian Bennett was almost certainly her biological father.

The man she had never known had saved her life, left her a letter, and built a financial future for her.

He had done all of that without asking for a single thing in return.

Aaliyah pressed the report against her chest.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

Denise sank into the chair.

“Because I didn't know how to explain it.””

“You could have started by telling me the truth.””

“I was afraid you'd hate me.””

Aaliyah looked at her mother.

“I don't know what I feel about you right now.””

Denise nodded, accepting the answer.

Marcus took the report and examined the laboratory name.

“This is an old result. We need to verify its authenticity before using it for legal purposes.””

Aaliyah wiped her cheeks.

“Fine. We'll verify it.””

Robert stepped forward.

“If Adrian was your biological father, the trust should be released.””

“Maybe,” Marcus said.

“But we won't assume anything until a lawyer reviews it.””

Robert's expression hardened.

“Why are you making this so complicated?””

“Because a life-changing financial decision deserves more than a guess.””

Aaliyah looked between them.

For the first time, she understood that this wasn't only about money or parentage.

It was about control.

Who got to tell her story.

Who got to decide what she knew.

Who got to stand beside her when she walked into the future.

She folded the DNA report carefully and slipped it into the envelope.

Then she looked at Marcus.

“Will you still walk me down the aisle?””

He went completely still.

Aaliyah's voice broke.

“I know I hurt you. I know I said things I can't take back. But I need you to understand that I wasn't trying to erase you. I was trying to find a part of myself I thought I'd lost.””

Marcus looked at her for a long time.

Then he said, “I never stopped being your father, Aaliyah.””

She began to cry.

He opened his arms.

This time, she ran into them.

He held her carefully, mindful of her dress, her makeup, and the bouquet pressed between them. She buried her face against his shoulder and sobbed like the little girl who had once been afraid he would disappear.

“I was so angry,” she whispered.

“I know.””

“I thought you wanted me to owe you.””

“I never wanted you to owe me anything.””

She pulled back.

“Then why did you keep the envelope?””

Marcus glanced toward the table.

“Because I wanted Robert to face what he had left behind. Not because I wanted you to pay for his mistakes.””

Aaliyah nodded, wiping her cheeks.

For a few seconds, the room felt almost peaceful.

Then Daniel picked up the DNA report's clear plastic sleeve.

“Liyah,” he said carefully, “there's a problem.””

She turned.

“What now?””

Daniel pointed to the laboratory's name.

“This test was completed twelve years ago.””

Aaliyah nodded.

“Yes.””

“But the report says the sample was collected from Adrian and the child's mother.””

She stared at him.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel turned the page around.

“The report confirms a biological relationship between Adrian and the child whose sample was tested.””

Aaliyah's stomach tightened.

“I'm the child.””

“Maybe. But look at the date of birth listed here.””

She moved closer.

The date was hers.

Then she saw the sample identification number.

It was different from the number on the medical records attached to the report.

Aaliyah looked at her mother.

“Did you give them my sample?””

Denise shook her head.

“No.””

Robert took the report from Daniel.

He examined the number, his face growing pale.

Then he looked at Marcus.

“Where did this sample come from?””

Marcus stared at the document.

His hands began to tremble.

Because he recognized the laboratory code.

It belonged to the hospital where Aaliyah had undergone surgery when she was three.

And in the margin, beside the sample number, someone had written a name.

*M. Cole.*

Marcus looked up, stunned.

“That isn't possible.””

Aaliyah stepped toward him.

“What does it mean?””

He looked at Denise.

She was already shaking her head.

“No. No, that can't be right.””

Marcus's voice was barely audible.

“This sample wasn't collected from Aaliyah.””

Aaliyah felt her blood turn cold.

“Then whose sample was it?””

Marcus looked at the final page.

And for the first time in twenty-two years, he seemed genuinely afraid of the answer.

“The report may not be Adrian's paternity test for you,” he whispered.

May you like

He turned the page toward Aaliyah.

“It may be a test involving me.””
