Amused

Chapter 9: The Man Behind The Monster

I had spent the entire night discovering that Marcus had secrets.

But I never expected to meet the person who taught him how to keep them.

The man standing in our doorway looked calm.

Too calm.

That was the first thing I noticed.

Not his expensive coat.

Not the silver hair.

Not the expensive watch shining beneath his sleeve.

It was the calm.

Like he had walked into a room full of broken lives and felt completely comfortable.

Marcus looked nothing like the confident man I knew.

He looked like a child.

“Dad.””

The word came out quietly.

The older man smiled.

“Hello, Marcus.””

Then his eyes moved to me.

“Nia.””

I froze.

He knew my name.

Of course he did.

This was the man who had been involved in my marriage from the beginning.

The man who had apparently been moving pieces around while I thought I was building a life.

“I’m Richard Reed.””

I didn’t offer my hand.

“I know who you are.””

His smile faded slightly.

“Good.””

He stepped inside.

Like he belonged there.

Like everyone else was a guest.

Lauren immediately stood.

“You shouldn’t be here.””

Richard looked at her.

“Still dramatic after all these years.””

Her face tightened.

I felt anger rise inside me.

Not because of the insult.

Because of the way he said it.

Like Lauren’s pain was an inconvenience.

Like she was an annoying problem instead of a person.

Marcus moved between them.

“Dad, leave.””

Richard looked surprised.

“Excuse me?””

“You heard me.””

For the first time all night, Marcus sounded different.

Not scared.

Not defensive.

Angry.

Richard stared at him.

“After everything I did for you?””

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“That’s exactly the problem.””

Silence.

Richard looked at me.

“Your husband is confused.””

I almost laughed.

“My husband has been many things tonight.””

I stepped forward.

“But confused isn’t one of them.””

Richard studied me.

“You think you understand what happened?””

I looked at him.

“I know enough.””

He smiled slightly.

“That’s the problem with people who only know pieces of a story.””

I crossed my arms.

“And you know the whole story?””

“Yes.””

The confidence in his voice made my skin crawl.

“Then tell it.””

Marcus looked at me.

“Nia.””

I ignored him.

“No more secrets.””

Richard looked at his son.

Then at me.

“You really want the truth?””

“Yes.””

He nodded.

“Fine.””

He walked toward the kitchen table and sat down.

The same table where I had cried.

The same table where I had discovered my husband’s betrayal.

Now another person was sitting there like he owned the place.

“Marcus grew up understanding one thing.””

I stared.

“What?””

“That image matters.””

I said nothing.

Richard continued.

“In our family, failure was never private.””

His eyes moved to Marcus.

“It was shameful.””

Marcus looked away.

Richard continued.

“When Marcus was young, he learned that people respect success.””

I almost interrupted.

“But you taught him that people respect appearances.””

Richard smiled.

“Exactly.””

The answer was so casual that it made me angry.

He wasn’t denying it.

He was proud.

I looked at Marcus.

“And you let him.””

Marcus looked down.

“I was raised that way.””

I shook my head.

“That explains you.””

I pointed at him.

“But it doesn’t excuse you.””

He nodded slowly.

“I know.””

Richard leaned back.

“This is why I came here.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“To fix this.””

I laughed.

“No.””

Richard looked at me.

“You misunderstand.””

“I understand perfectly.””

I looked around.

“You don’t fix people’s lives after destroying them.””

His expression hardened.

“I protected this family.””

I stepped closer.

“No.””

My voice became quiet.

“You protected a reputation.””

Richard’s eyes narrowed.

For the first time, I saw something beneath the calm.

Anger.

Good.

At least one honest emotion.

“You have no idea what Marcus sacrificed.””

I looked at Marcus.

“What did you sacrifice?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

Richard did.

“Everything.””

I waited.

“He gave up opportunities because of this marriage.””

I frowned.

“What opportunities?””

Richard looked at Marcus.

Then back at me.

“Do you really think it was a coincidence Marcus became interested in you?””

The room went silent.

My stomach dropped.

I hated that a part of me already knew the answer.

But I needed to hear it.

“Say it.””

Richard smiled faintly.

“You were valuable.””

The word made me sick.

Not loved.

Not special.

Valuable.

“Your family connections helped Marcus’s business.””

I stared.

“The business I supported.””

“Yes.””

“The business I helped build.””

“Yes.””

“The business you used to control my money.””

Richard didn’t respond.

Because silence was confirmation.

I turned to Marcus.

“Was any of it real?””

His face changed.

“Nia.””

“Answer me.””

He looked devastated.

“Yes.””

I shook my head.

“I don’t know what to believe anymore.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“I loved you.””

“But you were also using me.””

He stopped.

Because he couldn’t deny both things could exist.

That was the most painful part.

Maybe he did love me.

Maybe he also used me.

Maybe the truth was uglier than a simple villain and victim story.

Richard interrupted.

“This emotional discussion changes nothing.””

I looked at him.

“What does that mean?””

“It means the damage is already done.””

He pulled out a folder.

My heart sank.

Not another one.

He placed it on the table.

“Marcus has been preparing for this.””

I looked at Marcus.

“What is that?””

Marcus looked terrified.

“I didn’t know about that.””

Richard looked annoyed.

“You’re going to make this harder than it needs to be?””

Marcus stepped forward.

“What did you do?””

Richard ignored him.

I opened the folder.

The first page was a legal document.

My name.

Marcus’s name.

And a separation agreement.

But this wasn’t like the others.

This one was recent.

Very recent.

The date was yesterday.

I looked up.

“Yesterday?””

Richard nodded.

“Your husband was going to file.””

Marcus looked shocked.

“No.””

Richard turned.

“You were.””

“I never signed that.””

“You were going to.””

I looked at Marcus.

“Were you?””

His face broke.

“I thought about it.””

The honesty hurt.

But at least it was real.

“Why?””

He looked at me.

“Because I knew you would leave after you found out.””

I stared.

“And you wanted to control how it happened.””

He nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

I closed the folder.

Richard watched me.

“You see?””

He said.

“This is why people like us survive.””

I looked at him.

“People like you?””

He smiled.

“People who plan ahead.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

I walked toward the door.

“People like you are the reason everyone around you needs a plan to survive.””

Nobody spoke.

I opened the door.

The hallway was quiet.

For the first time all night, I felt like I could breathe.

Then Richard said something that stopped me.

“You still don’t know the worst part.””

I turned slowly.

Marcus looked at him.

“Dad.””

Richard ignored him.

“The reason Marcus kept lying wasn’t because he was afraid of losing you.””

My heart slowed.

“Then why?””

Richard smiled.

“Because he was afraid you would find out what happened the night of your wedding.””

I looked at Marcus.

His face had gone completely pale.

“What happened that night?””

Nobody answered.

Richard stood.

And then he said the sentence that made Marcus finally look afraid.

“The night you married my son…”

He paused.

“Someone disappeared.””

I felt a chill.

Lauren whispered:

“No.””

Richard looked at her.

“Yes.””

I looked between them.

“What does that mean?””

Lauren’s eyes filled with tears.

Because she knew.

Marcus knew.

Everyone knew except me.

Then Richard said:

“And now that you’re finally asking questions…”

May you like

He smiled.

“You’re going to find out why.””
