Chapter 8: The Family That Built The Lie
The room went silent.
Not the kind of silence that happens when people run out of things to say.
The kind that happens when one sentence changes the entire story.
I looked at Marcus.
Then at Lauren.
Then back at Marcus.
“Your father?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
That was becoming his most honest response.
Lauren slowly sat down.
Her hands were shaking.
“I didn’t want it to come to this.””
I stared at her.
“Come to what?””
She looked at Marcus.
“To exposing everything.””
Marcus’s expression hardened.
“Lauren.””
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“You don’t get to do that anymore.””
He stepped forward.
“Do what?””
“Act like I’m the problem because I finally stopped protecting you.””
The anger in her voice surprised me.
Not because she was angry.
Because she had been carrying it for years.
I looked at Marcus.
“What does your father have to do with this?””
Marcus looked away.
“Nia, it’s complicated.””
I almost laughed.
There it was again.
The sentence he used whenever the truth was too ugly to say.
“Try me.””
He stayed quiet.
Lauren took a breath.
“His father helped him cover everything.””
I frowned.
“Everything?””
She nodded.
“The money. The paperwork. The lies.””
My stomach tightened.
I looked at Marcus.
“Your father helped you?””
Marcus finally spoke.
“He was trying to help.””
I stared at him.
“Help?””
The word sounded impossible.
“He helped you hide another relationship.””
“He wanted to protect the family.””
I felt cold.
“The family?””
I stepped closer.
“What family?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
“The one where everyone lies?””
His jaw tightened.
“You don’t understand.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You’re right.””
“I don’t understand.””
I pointed around the apartment.
“I don’t understand how everyone knew pieces of my life except me.””
Lauren looked down.
“I should have told you sooner.””
“Yes.””
She nodded.
“I know.””
The fact that everyone kept admitting their failures after the damage was done made something inside me ache.
Because apologies were always easier after the truth came out.
I looked at Marcus.
“Tell me about your father.””
He sat down slowly.
“My dad was always worried about appearances.””
I waited.
“He believed problems should be handled privately.””
Lauren gave a bitter laugh.
“Private meant hidden.””
Marcus ignored her.
“When Lauren came back, he helped me.””
“With what?””
Marcus looked at the floor.
“Making sure nobody found out.””
My hands curled into fists.
“You mean me.””
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt.
But at least it was honest.
For once.
“When did he get involved?””
Marcus swallowed.
“The week before our wedding.””
My heart dropped.
The week before.
The happiest week of my life.
The week I was choosing flowers.
Writing vows.
Making plans.
Meanwhile, Marcus and his father were managing secrets.
“What did he do?””
Marcus looked at Lauren.
She answered.
“He paid for my silence.””
I stared.
“What?””
“He offered me money to leave town.””
My mouth went dry.
“Your father paid her?””
“Yes.””
“How much?””
Lauren looked embarrassed.
“Fifty thousand dollars.””
I closed my eyes.
Another payment.
Another secret.
Another person bought into silence.
“Where did that money come from?””
Nobody spoke.
I opened my eyes.
“No.””
Marcus looked at me.
“Nia.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“Don’t tell me.””
But I already knew.
The answer was written all over his face.
“Our money.””
Marcus whispered:
“Not directly.””
I looked at him.
“What does that mean?””
“It came from an account my father controlled.””
I stared.
“And where did that money come from?””
Silence.
Then Lauren quietly said:
“The business.””
My stomach turned.
“The business?””
She nodded.
“The one you invested in.””
I froze.
I had helped Marcus build that business.
When he first started, I was the one editing documents at midnight.
I was the one eating cheap dinners because we wanted to save every dollar.
I was the one telling him he could succeed.
And now I was finding out my sacrifices had been used to fund secrets.
“You used me.””
Marcus looked devastated.
“I never saw it that way.””
“That’s the problem.””
I looked at him.
“You never see what you do to people.””
He looked away.
Because maybe he finally understood.
Not the cheating.
Not the lies.
The pattern.
Everyone around Marcus became something useful.
A wife.
A girlfriend.
A brother.
A father.
A friend.
Pieces on a board.
I turned to Lauren.
“Why did you disappear?””
Her face changed.
Like she had been waiting years for someone to ask.
“Because I was threatened.””
My heart stopped.
“By who?””
She looked at Marcus.
“Your father.””
Marcus immediately shook his head.
“No.””
Lauren looked at him.
“You know it’s true.””
“What did he say?””
Lauren looked at me.
“He told me if I stayed, Marcus would lose everything.””
I waited.
“And?””
“He told me you would hate me.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“He said you would never forgive me for ruining your wedding.””
My chest tightened.
“He made me believe I was the villain.””
I looked at Marcus.
“That sounds familiar.””
He looked down.
Because it did.
The same strategy.
The same story.
Make someone else carry the blame.
Make everyone afraid.
Make everyone quiet.
My phone buzzed.
Again.
Everyone looked at it.
This time, the message was from Dylan.
*I found something else. You need to see this.*
Attached was a photo.
I opened it.
A bank statement.
My eyes moved across the screen.
Then stopped.
Because there was a transaction from years ago.
Before my wedding.
Before Claire.
Before everything.
A payment.
From Marcus’s father.
To Marcus.
The description made my blood run cold.
*Initial arrangement.*
I looked up.
“What is this?””
Marcus went pale.
Lauren whispered:
“That’s the first payment.””
“First payment for what?””
Nobody answered.
I looked at Marcus.
“Tell me.””
His face was full of fear.
Not because I was angry.
Because he knew the truth would end everything.
“What was the arrangement?””
Marcus sat there silently.
Then Lauren spoke.
“He wasn’t supposed to marry you.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
She looked at me with tears in her eyes.
“Not at first.””
The room felt like it was spinning.
“What does that mean?””
Marcus finally spoke.
“I changed my mind.””
I stared.
“Changed your mind?””
He looked broken.
“Yes.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“Nia…”
“No.””
My voice rose.
“You don’t get to say that like it’s some small decision.””
He stood.
“I did love you.””
“Then why was there an arrangement?””
Marcus couldn’t answer.
Lauren did.
“Because when Marcus met you, his father already had a plan.””
I looked at her.
“A plan for what?””
She hesitated.
Then whispered:
“To marry into your family.””
I felt the air leave my lungs.
“What?””
Lauren looked at Marcus.
“He didn’t choose you because of love.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
“Lauren.””
She continued.
“He chose you because of what your family could give him.””
I stared at Marcus.
My entire marriage.
Every memory.
Every moment.
Suddenly questioned.
But then Marcus said something that stopped me.
Something I never expected.
“That wasn’t true.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He stepped closer.
“For the first time in my life…”
His voice broke.
“I disobeyed my father.””
I didn’t move.
“Because I really did fall in love with you.””
The words should have mattered.
Maybe once they would have.
But now?
Now they just created a new question.
“If you loved me…”
I looked at him.
“Why did you spend ten years proving you didn’t?””
Marcus had no answer.
Then the apartment lights suddenly flickered.
Everyone turned.
A second later, someone knocked on the door.
Three slow knocks.
Nobody moved.
Marcus’s face changed.
“Who is it?””
The knocking came again.
Lauren whispered:
“He found us.””
My heart pounded.
Marcus slowly walked toward the door.
I grabbed his arm.
“No.””
He looked at me.
“Don’t open it.””
But before anyone could stop him, the door handle turned.
And a voice came from the other side.
A voice I had never heard before.
But Marcus recognized instantly.
“Son.””
The door opened.
And the man standing there looked exactly like Marcus.
Older.
Colder.
More controlled.
His eyes moved around the room.
To me.
To Lauren.
Then to Marcus.
May you like
And he smiled.
“Looks like everyone finally knows.””
