Amused

Chapter 7: The Man Who Waited in the Shadows

The first thing I noticed about Adrian’s safe house was that it didn’t look like a safe house.

It looked like a place where someone came to disappear.

No family photographs.

No personal belongings.

No signs that anyone had ever truly lived there.

Just gray walls, old furniture, and security equipment hidden behind ordinary decorations.

It reminded me of Damon.

Beautiful from the outside.

Empty in the places nobody saw.

Adrian locked the door behind us and immediately checked the windows.

Twice.

Then he checked the cameras.

Then the locks again.

I stood in the center of the room, exhausted, soaked from the rain, and furious that my life had somehow become a battlefield I never agreed to enter.

“You have five minutes,” I said.

Adrian looked at me.

“For what?””

“For the truth.””

His expression didn’t change.

I stepped closer.

“No more secrets.””

“You’re not in a position to demand—”

I laughed.

A sharp, angry sound.

“Not in a position?””

My hand moved to my stomach.

“I have spent days discovering that my husband hid an entire part of his life from me. I have had strangers break into my home. I have learned that my pregnancy is connected to some family war I knew nothing about.””

I looked him directly in the eyes.

“So yes. I am absolutely in a position to demand answers.””

For a moment, Adrian said nothing.

Then he nodded.

“You’re right.””

That surprised me.

I expected arrogance.

Instead, he looked tired.

Older.

Like carrying secrets had aged him.

“Sit down.””

“I don’t want tea.””

A faint smile appeared.

“I wasn’t offering tea.””

“Good.””

He walked toward the kitchen area and poured himself a glass of water.

Then he leaned against the counter.

“My brother told you I was dangerous.””

“He told me you were someone I shouldn’t let near me.””

Adrian looked down.

“He was right.””

The honesty caught me off guard.

“You admit that?””

“I have done things I’m not proud of.””

“Like what?””

His fingers tightened around the glass.

“Things I did because I thought they were necessary.””

“That sounds exactly like Damon.””

His eyes lifted.

The comparison bothered him.

Good.

“Damon believes control is protection.””

I stared at him.

“And you don’t?””

“No.””

A pause.

“I believe control is fear pretending to be love.””

The words stayed with me.

Because they sounded like something I had been trying to understand about Damon.

About myself.

About the entire marriage.

“What happened between you two?””

Adrian looked toward the dark window.

“Damon and I were never supposed to be brothers.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“Our father had another family.””

I went still.

“He had two lives.””

The storm outside continued.

“Damon was raised as the perfect Vale heir. The golden son. The one everyone saw.””

“And you?””

“I was the mistake nobody was supposed to know about.””

I didn’t speak.

For the first time, I saw something human beneath Adrian’s cold exterior.

Not kindness.

Not innocence.

Pain.

“My mother disappeared when I was young. My father sent money but never came himself.””

“That’s why Damon didn’t mention you?””

Adrian laughed softly.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“Damon didn’t mention me because he was ashamed.””

“Of you?””

“Of what I represented.””

I waited.

“The truth.””

The word hung between us.

“What truth?””

“That the Vale family was never as perfect as everyone believed.””

He walked toward a cabinet and opened it.

Inside were dozens of files.

Documents.

Photographs.

Records.

My stomach tightened.

“You kept all of this?””

“I spent twenty years collecting proof.””

“Proof of what?””

“That my father built his empire on things nobody was supposed to discover.””

I remembered what Adrian said before.

The record.

The hidden message.

The people looking for my baby.

“Your father’s death.””

Adrian nodded.

“He found out someone was stealing from the company.””

“Who?””

He looked at me.

“That’s the problem.””

A pause.

“Everyone.””

I frowned.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It does if you understand the Vale family.””

He opened one of the files.

Inside were photographs.

Executives.

Politicians.

Business partners.

People smiling beside Damon’s father at charity events.

“They all benefited from what he built.””

“And they killed him?””

“Some of them.””

My skin crawled.

“Who?””

Adrian closed the folder.

“That’s what your baby’s photograph reveals.””

I stared at him.

Again.

The photograph.

The ultrasound.

Something that should have been the happiest moment of my life had become the center of a war.

“I don’t understand.””

“You don’t need to.””

“Yes, I do.””

My voice became sharper.

“You keep saying everyone is protecting me. Damon says he’s protecting me. You say you’re protecting me.””

I stepped closer.

“But nobody is telling me anything.””

Adrian looked at me.

“So tell me.””

I pointed at my stomach.

“What exactly makes my child so important?””

His expression changed.

Not fear.

Something worse.

Regret.

“Because your son is the last living connection to the Vale bloodline that knows the truth.””

I stared at him.

“That makes no sense.””

“It will.””

“No. Explain.””

Adrian took a breath.

“The night our father died, he created a backup.””

“A backup?””

“Of everything.””

He opened another file.

“Financial records. Names. Transactions. Evidence.””

“And where is it?””

Adrian looked at me.

“Hidden.””

“Where?””

“With someone he trusted.””

“Who?””

Adrian’s answer came quietly.

“Your mother.””

My entire body froze.

“What?””

“My mother?””

“No.””

Adrian nodded.

“Your mother knew my father.””

I felt like the floor had disappeared.

“That’s impossible.””

“Is it?””

“Yes.””

“My mother died when I was seventeen.””

“I know.””

The way he said it made me look at him.

“You know?””

Adrian didn’t answer.

“Adrian.””

He looked away.

That was when I understood.

“You investigated me.””

“Yes.””

My heart sank.

“You knew everything about me before I met Damon.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because when Damon brought you into the Vale family, I knew you were not random.””

I felt anger rising.

“I was his wife.””

“You were more than that.””

“What does that mean?””

Adrian looked at the ultrasound photo in my hand.

“Your mother left you something before she died.””

My fingers tightened.

“No.””

“A letter.””

My breath stopped.

I had never told anyone about that.

Not Damon.

Not anyone.

“How do you know?””

“Because I saw it.””

The room became silent.

“You saw my mother’s letter?””

“Yes.””

“Where is it?””

Adrian hesitated.

Then:

“Damon has it.””

My heart shattered in a completely different way.

Damon.

Again.

Always Damon.

“What?””

“He found it years ago.””

“And never told me?””

Adrian looked at me.

“No.””

I laughed quietly.

But there was no humor.

Of course.

Of course there was another secret.

“How many things did he hide from me?””

Adrian didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

My phone suddenly vibrated.

Both of us looked down.

A message.

From Damon.

I didn’t want to open it.

But I did.

*Damon: I know Adrian told you about your mother.*

My hands shook.

Another message appeared.

*Damon: Please don’t believe everything he says.*

I stared.

Then another.

*Damon: He doesn’t know the whole story.*

My anger returned.

I typed immediately.

*Me: Neither do I. Because you never told me.*

The message showed as delivered.

No response.

Then my phone rang.

Damon.

I answered.

“What?””

For a moment, there was only silence.

Then:

“I deserve that.””

I looked away.

“Where are you?””

“Close.””

“Why?””

“Because I need to see you.””

“No.””

“Evelyn—”

“No.””

My voice broke.

“You don’t get to appear when things become dangerous and disappear when I need the truth.””

“I know.””

“Stop saying that.””

Silence.

Then Damon said:

“I found Clara.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“She was trying to reach you because she knew something was coming.””

“What happened to her?””

Another silence.

Then his voice became dangerously quiet.

“She’s missing.””

The room went cold.

Adrian looked at me.

He understood immediately.

“What?””

I swallowed.

“Clara is gone.””

Adrian’s expression changed.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

“No.””

“What?””

He looked toward the door.

“The enemy isn’t searching for the file anymore.””

A chill ran through me.

“Then what are they searching for?””

Adrian looked at my stomach.

And whispered:

“They’re trying to erase the last person who can unlock it.””

At that exact moment, the lights in the safe house went out.

And from somewhere outside, a car door slammed.

Then another.

Then another.

Adrian reached for the weapon hidden beneath the table.

I stared at him.

“Tell me something.””

He looked at me.

“What?””

“Is Damon coming to save us?””

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“No.””

My heart dropped.

“Why?””

Because his next words changed everything.

“Because Damon isn’t the only Vale they’re hunting.””

May you like

A pause.

“He’s the one they’re trying to kill first.””
