Chapter 5: The Truth Buried Beneath the Vale Name
For three seconds, I forgot how to breathe.
Adrian Vale stood inside my bedroom as if he belonged there.
As if breaking through my window in the middle of the night was normal.
As if my fear was nothing more than an inconvenience.
He brushed a few pieces of broken glass from his expensive coat and looked around the small room.
The contrast was almost ridiculous.
A man born into unimaginable wealth standing inside my modest apartment.
A predator walking into a place I had built to feel safe.
His eyes finally returned to me.
“You look different.””
My fingers tightened around my phone.
“Get out.””
A slow smile crossed his face.
“There she is.””
I hated that he sounded pleased.
Like he had been waiting to see my anger.
“You have no right to be here.””
Adrian tilted his head.
“You sound exactly like Damon.””
My stomach twisted.
“Don’t compare me to him.””
That made him laugh quietly.
A cold, humorless sound.
“You still defend him.””
“I don’t defend anyone.””
“Really?””
He took one step closer.
“Because from what I’ve heard, you spent years convincing yourself Damon was a good man.””
My jaw tightened.
“You don’t know anything about my marriage.””
“No?””
He looked around the room.
“At least I know it ended the moment you discovered the truth.””
I froze.
“What truth?””
His expression changed.
Not much.
But enough.
Enough to tell me he had not come here just to scare me.
He came here because he wanted something.
“You don’t know, do you?””
“Know what?””
Adrian smiled.
And I immediately understood why Damon’s voice had sounded different when he said his name.
Adrian was dangerous because he enjoyed having information other people didn’t.
“You really believed Damon left you because he stopped loving you.””
My heart tightened.
“Don’t talk about him.””
“Why?””
He moved closer.
“Because some part of you still loves him?””
I said nothing.
That was answer enough.
Adrian looked almost amused.
“Interesting.””
“What do you want?””
The smile disappeared.
Finally.
“I want what belongs to me.””
“I don’t have anything that belongs to you.””
“You’re sure?””
“Yes.””
His eyes dropped briefly to my stomach.
Then back to my face.
“You have something more valuable than money.””
My entire body went cold.
“You don’t know anything about my baby.””
“I know more than you think.””
I stepped backward.
“You’re not going near my child.””
For the first time, Adrian’s expression hardened.
“Your child?””
The way he repeated it made my skin crawl.
“Evelyn, you have no idea what you’re carrying.””
“He’s a baby.””
“He’s a Vale.””
The room became silent.
I hated the way he said it.
Not with pride.
With possession.
Like my unborn son was a piece of property.
“You’re sick.””
“No.””
His eyes sharpened.
“I’m realistic.””
Before I could answer, Damon’s voice suddenly came from my phone on the floor.
“Adrian.””
Both of us looked down.
The call was still connected.
Damon had heard everything.
Adrian smiled.
“Well.””
He walked toward the phone.
“My brother finally decided to stop hiding.””
“Leave her alone.””
Damon’s voice was low.
Controlled.
But I could hear the anger underneath.
Adrian picked up the phone.
“Four years, Damon.””
Silence.
“Four years and you still think you can protect her.””
“Put the phone down.””
“You know what’s funny?””
Adrian looked at me.
“You always thought you were the smarter one.””
Damon didn’t answer.
“You built an empire. You manipulated investors. You convinced the entire world you were untouchable.””
Adrian’s smile disappeared.
“But you were always terrible at protecting the people you loved.””
My chest tightened.
Because that was the cruelest thing about it.
Somewhere deep inside, I knew there was truth in those words.
Damon had loved me.
But love without honesty had still destroyed me.
“Adrian,” Damon said.
The warning in his voice was unmistakable.
“Don’t.””
Adrian looked at the phone.
“Or what?””
For the first time, I heard something dangerous in Damon’s silence.
Not anger.
Fear.
“Evelyn,” Damon said.
His voice softened.
“Move away from him.””
Adrian looked at me.
“You see?””
He smiled.
“He still gives orders.””
I didn’t move.
Not because I trusted Adrian.
Because I didn’t trust Damon either.
Not anymore.
“You both keep talking like I’m not standing here.””
That surprised them.
Good.
I was tired of being the person everyone protected while hiding the truth from me.
“I’m not a secret.””
Adrian watched me carefully.
“No.””
I held his gaze.
“I’m not a possession.””
Something flickered across his face.
Respect?
Maybe.
Or annoyance.
“You’re stronger than Damon described.””
My heart skipped.
“Damon talked about me?””
Adrian said nothing.
Too late.
I heard it.
The answer hidden in his silence.
“You knew about me before tonight.””
“Yes.””
“How long?””
“Long enough.””
A terrible feeling settled over me.
“How long have you been watching me?””
Adrian looked away.
That was all the confirmation I needed.
I felt sick.
“You’ve been watching my life?””
“Not your life.””
His eyes returned to mine.
“Your child.””
I stepped back.
“No.””
“Evelyn—”
“No.””
My voice rose.
“You don’t get to stand in my home and talk about my baby like he’s some object.””
Adrian’s expression became colder.
“You still don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
For the first time, he hesitated.
Just for a moment.
But I saw it.
A crack in the confidence.
“Damon didn’t tell you about the night our father died.””
I looked at the phone.
Damon said nothing.
That silence was unbearable.
“No,” I whispered.
Adrian nodded.
“Of course he didn’t.””
“Why?””
“Because Damon has spent his entire life trying to bury what happened.””
“What happened?””
Adrian looked toward the broken window.
The storm outside had grown louder.
“Our father didn’t die because of an accident.””
The words landed slowly.
Like a weight.
“What?””
Damon’s voice cut through the phone.
“Adrian, stop.””
Adrian ignored him.
“He was murdered.””
My breath caught.
The room seemed to tilt.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“By who?””
Adrian looked at me.
And for the first time, I saw something besides arrogance in his eyes.
Pain.
Deep, old pain.
“The same people who are looking for your son.””
I stared at him.
“What does my son have to do with any of this?””
Adrian walked closer.
But this time, there was no smile.
No arrogance.
Only seriousness.
“Because before our father died, he left something behind.””
“What?””
“A record.””
“A record of what?””
“Everything.””
The storm shook the windows.
“Every crime. Every secret. Every person who helped build the Vale empire.””
My heartbeat became louder.
“And?””
Adrian looked at me.
“And the only copy was hidden somewhere Damon would never look.””
“Where?””
His eyes dropped to the ultrasound photo on the table.
I followed his gaze.
My blood ran cold.
“No.””
Adrian didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
Because suddenly I understood.
The photo.
The box.
The night Damon’s father died.
The secrets.
The missing brother.
Everything was connected.
“No,” I repeated.
But this time, I wasn’t speaking to Adrian.
I was speaking to the truth.
Damon’s voice came through the phone.
“Evelyn.””
I looked down.
“Tell me.””
Silence.
“Damon, tell me the truth.””
A long pause.
Then his voice broke.
“The photograph you have…”
I looked at the ultrasound picture.
“It isn’t just a picture of our baby.””
My hand covered my mouth.
“What are you saying?””
Damon took a breath.
“The original image file contains something hidden.””
The room went completely still.
Adrian watched me.
Waiting.
Damon continued.
“Your doctor’s office wasn’t the only place that stored that image.””
My blood ran cold.
“What does that mean?””
“It means someone used your pregnancy records to hide a message.””
I stared at the photograph.
The tiny image that had represented the beginning of my family.
Now it felt like a doorway into something much darker.
“Who?””
Damon didn’t answer.
And then I heard something that made my heart stop.
A sound from outside my apartment.
More footsteps.
Not one person.
Several.
Adrian heard them too.
His expression changed instantly.
For the first time tonight, he looked afraid.
“They found us.””
I looked between him and the broken window.
“Who?””
Adrian turned toward the door.
Then he said the words I would remember for the rest of my life.
“The people who killed our father.””
The apartment lights suddenly came back on.
And beneath the fear in Adrian’s eyes was something even worse.
Regret.
Because he knew something I didn’t.
They had not come for Damon.
They had not come for Adrian.
May you like
They had come for me.
And for the child I was carrying.
