Amused

Chapter 7: The Truth My Husband Was Terrified To Tell Me

“Someone killed him.””

Andre’s words stayed in the air.

I waited for him to take them back.

For him to say he was confused.

For him to say he was angry and didn’t mean it.

But he didn’t.

He just stood there.

A man finally trapped by the truth he had spent years running from.

“What do you mean?”” I asked.

My voice sounded distant.

Like I was hearing myself from somewhere else.

Andre looked toward the floor.

“I mean Ethan’s death wasn’t random.””

“Then what was it?””

He didn’t answer.

“Andre.””

His eyes lifted to mine.

“I don’t know.””

I almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because after everything, it was the one answer I couldn’t accept.

“You don’t know?””

“No.””

“You expect me to believe that?””

His face tightened.

“I’m telling you the truth.””

I looked around the room.

The same living room where we had celebrated birthdays.

The same place where we opened Christmas gifts.

The same house where I had spent years believing I knew the person standing in front of me.

But now every memory felt different.

Every moment had a shadow.

“How long have you known?””

Andre swallowed.

“Since the police called me.””

“Three years ago?””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me?””

He closed his eyes.

“No.””

The honesty hurt.

Maybe because I wanted him to deny it.

Maybe because some part of me still wanted him to fight for the image I had loved.

“You let me believe your best friend moved away.””

“I was trying to protect you.””

I looked at him.

“There it is again.””

His eyebrows pulled together.

“What?””

“Your favorite excuse.””

His expression changed.

“I’m serious.””

“So am I.””

I stepped closer.

“You keep saying you’re protecting me, but you never ask what I want. You never give me the choice.””

Andre looked away.

Because he knew I was right.

And that was the first time I realized something important.

He wasn’t just hiding things from me.

He had built an entire life around deciding what I was allowed to know.

The next morning, I woke up to the sound of my phone ringing.

For one second, I forgot everything.

Then I saw Andre sleeping on the couch downstairs.

And the truth returned.

I answered the call.

“Hello?””

“Is this Simone Williams?””

“Yes.””

“This is Detective Marcus Hale.””

I sat up.

The name immediately woke every part of me.

The detective from last night.

The one who had made Andre look afraid.

“I understand you spoke with my husband.””

There was a pause.

“Yes.””

Something about the silence made me uneasy.

“Is there a reason you’re calling me?””

Another pause.

Then:

“Your husband didn’t tell you everything about Ethan Cole.””

I looked toward the living room.

Andre was still asleep.

“What does that mean?””

“It means there are parts of this case he has kept hidden.””

My heart started beating faster.

“Case?””

The detective didn’t answer immediately.

“Mrs. Williams, before we continue, I need to ask you something.””

“What?””

“Are you currently safe?””

The question surprised me.

Safe.

Not okay.

Not happy.

Safe.

I looked down at my hands.

At the faint marks that had been hidden under sleeves for weeks.

At the bruised eye I had tried to cover with makeup.

I didn’t answer.

The detective noticed.

“Mrs. Williams?””

“I don’t know.””

The words came out before I could stop them.

And once they were spoken, I realized how true they were.

I didn’t know.

I didn’t know if my husband was the person who hurt Ethan.

I didn’t know if he was capable of more than I understood.

I didn’t know if I had been living beside a stranger.

“I need you to listen carefully,” Detective Hale said.

“Ethan’s case was reopened six months ago.””

“Why?””

“New evidence.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“What evidence?””

“I can’t discuss details over the phone.””

“Then why call me?””

“Because your name came up.””

My stomach dropped.

“My name?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Another pause.

Then he said:

“Because Ethan left something behind.””

I stood.

“What?””

“A message.””

“What kind of message?””

“One that mentioned you.””

My breathing stopped.

“Me?””

“Yes.””

I looked at Andre.

Still asleep.

Still unaware.

“What did it say?””

The detective hesitated.

“Mrs. Williams, I think you need to hear this in person.””

Two hours later, I sat across from Detective Marcus Hale in a quiet corner of a police station.

I expected someone intimidating.

Instead, he looked tired.

Like someone who had carried too many unanswered questions.

He placed a folder on the table.

“This is everything we can share with you right now.””

I didn’t touch it.

“Why me?””

He studied me carefully.

“Because Ethan believed you were the only person who could figure out the truth.””

I stared at him.

“I barely knew Ethan.””

“You knew him more than you think.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Ethan was Andre’s friend.””

Detective Hale leaned forward.

“Did Andre ever tell you why Ethan disappeared from his life?””

“He said they had a disagreement.””

“That’s all?””

“Yes.””

The detective opened the folder.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

Notes.

Then he placed one picture in front of me.

It was Ethan.

I recognized him from our wedding photos.

He was smiling.

Young.

Alive.

On the back of the picture was handwriting.

My breath caught.

I knew that handwriting.

Because I had seen it on birthday cards.

Anniversary notes.

Love letters.

It was Andre’s handwriting.

The detective noticed my reaction.

“You recognize it?””

“Yes.””

He nodded.

“Ethan kept this photo in his apartment.””

I turned it over.

There was a sentence written beneath it.

*If anything happens to me, Simone needs to know Andre wasn’t the man she thinks he is.*

My hands went cold.

I looked up.

“Why would Ethan write my name?””

“That’s what we’re trying to find out.””

I stared at the words.

Andre wasn’t the man she thinks he is.

The sentence felt like a knife.

Because it wasn’t only about Ethan anymore.

It was about me.

My marriage.

My entire life.

“What happened between them?”” I asked.

Detective Hale leaned back.

“Ethan discovered financial misconduct inside their company.””

I frowned.

“Are you saying Andre stole money?””

“I’m saying Ethan believed something illegal was happening.””

My mind raced.

“That’s why they fought?””

“Possibly.””

“And the accident?””

The detective looked at me.

“Not an accident.””

I remembered Andre saying the same thing.

Someone killed him.

“Who?””

“We don’t know yet.””

I looked down.

“But you suspect Andre.””

Detective Hale didn’t answer.

That was an answer.

“I need to ask you something else.””

“What?””

“Has Andre ever become violent with you?””

The room went silent.

I looked at the folder.

At Ethan’s photo.

At the evidence of all the things Andre had hidden.

Then I thought about my mother.

Her face.

Her fear.

Her voice telling me to stop protecting him.

“Yes.””

The word was barely audible.

But once it came out, I couldn’t take it back.

The detective’s expression changed.

Not shock.

Recognition.

“How long?””

I looked away.

“I don’t know.””

“That’s not unusual.””

The sentence hurt.

Because it meant I wasn’t the first person to sit in that chair.

“I thought I could fix it.””

Detective Hale nodded slowly.

“People often think that.””

I looked at him.

“Did Ethan know?””

“I don’t know.””

“But he suspected something?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

The detective slid another document across the table.

“This was recovered from Ethan’s apartment.””

I read it.

It was a handwritten note.

Not from Andre.

From Ethan.

The words were simple.

*Andre is becoming dangerous.*

My heart stopped.

Below that:

*If Simone ever finds out what happened, she needs to leave before he realizes she knows.*

I couldn’t move.

Because suddenly, the message from the unknown number made sense.

The warning.

The photos.

The drawer.

Someone wasn’t just exposing Andre’s secrets.

Someone was trying to keep me alive.

My phone buzzed.

I looked down.

A message.

From Andre.

*Where are you?*

Another message appeared immediately.

*We need to talk.*

Then a third.

*I know you met with Detective Hale.*

My blood went cold.

I looked at the detective.

“How does he know?””

Detective Hale took the phone from my hand and looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

“Mrs. Williams…”

“What?””

He slowly turned the phone back toward me.

“Because someone told him.””

I stared at the message.

Someone.

Not a guess.

Not a suspicion.

Someone.

Then my phone buzzed again.

A new message appeared.

But this time it wasn’t from Andre.

May you like

It was from the unknown number.

*Run. He knows everything.*
