Chapter 5: The Woman Who Knew My Husband Before I Did
“Rachel has a baby?””
The question left my mouth, but Andre didn’t answer.
He just stood there.
Silent.
That was worse than any confession.
Because silence meant there was something to confess.
I stared at him, waiting for him to laugh. Waiting for him to tell me this was some ridiculous misunderstanding. Waiting for him to say the message was a lie.
But Andre only looked at the phone in my hand.
Like the device was the enemy.
Not him.
“Give me that.””
His voice was low.
Controlled.
“No.””
“Simone.””
“No.””
I held the phone tighter.
For the first time in years, I didn’t move when he told me to.
His expression changed.
A small crack appeared in the confidence he always carried.
“You don’t know what you’re looking at.””
“Then explain it.””
“It’s complicated.””
I laughed quietly.
“Of course it is.””
I looked at the screen again.
The message was still there.
*Ask him about Rachel’s baby.*
Three words that had just destroyed the last excuse I had left.
Because affairs were one thing.
Painful.
Humiliating.
Unforgivable.
But a child?
A child meant time.
Planning.
A whole life happening somewhere outside of mine.
“How long?”” I asked.
Andre looked away.
“Simone…”
“How long have you known about this baby?””
He rubbed his face.
A gesture I had seen thousands of times.
Usually after work.
Usually after an argument.
Usually when he wanted me to believe he was the exhausted victim.
But tonight, it looked different.
Tonight, it looked like someone trying to calculate the right lie.
“I didn’t know at first.””
I stared at him.
“What does that mean?””
“It means I didn’t know she was pregnant.””
“But you knew about her.””
He didn’t answer.
My chest tightened.
“You knew about Rachel.””
“Yes.””
The honesty shocked me.
Not because he admitted it.
Because he admitted it so easily.
Like the truth had become too heavy to keep carrying.
“How long?””
He sat down in the chair behind his desk.
For the first time, Andre looked smaller.
Not innocent.
Never innocent.
Just smaller.
“A year.””
I felt like the room tilted.
“A year?””
“Simone—”
“You have known another woman for a year?””
“It wasn’t like that.””
I looked at him.
I almost couldn’t believe those words came out of his mouth.
“Then what was it like?””
He stayed quiet.
I walked away from the desk.
I needed distance.
I needed air.
Because suddenly this room felt like it belonged to someone else.
Someone I didn’t know.
“I spent a year thinking we were struggling.””
My voice cracked.
“I thought you were stressed because of work.””
I looked at the pictures scattered across the desk.
“I thought you were distant because you were tired.””
I looked at him.
“But you weren’t tired.””
Andre didn’t speak.
“You were somewhere else.””
His eyes lowered.
And that hurt more than anger would have.
Because it was confirmation.
I didn’t sleep that night.
Neither did Andre.
We stayed in separate rooms, separated by one hallway and years of lies.
At 3:17 in the morning, I sat on the edge of our bed staring at the wedding photo on my nightstand.
I picked it up.
In the picture, Andre was smiling.
His arm was around my waist.
His forehead was pressed against mine.
We looked happy.
Real.
I remembered that day so clearly.
The flowers.
The music.
My father’s speech.
My mother crying as she watched me walk down the aisle.
And Andre’s promise.
“I will always choose you.””
I closed my eyes.
Because that was the cruelest part.
I still remembered the man who made that promise.
Even though I was finally meeting the man who broke it.
My phone lit up.
A message.
Unknown number.
I opened it.
*I’m sorry you had to find out this way.*
I stared at it.
My fingers hovered over the keyboard.
Then I typed:
*Who are you?*
The reply came quickly.
*Someone who knows what Andre is capable of.*
I swallowed.
*Rachel?*
Three dots appeared.
Then disappeared.
Then appeared again.
Finally:
*Yes.*
My heart pounded.
I looked toward the bedroom door.
Locked.
Safe.
For the first time in years, I wondered if the woman on the other side of this story had been suffering too.
*Why are you telling me now?*
The response took longer.
*Because I found out I wasn’t the only one.*
My stomach tightened.
I sat up straighter.
*What does that mean?*
A photo appeared.
I opened it.
It was a screenshot of a message conversation.
Andre’s name was at the top.
The messages were between him and another woman.
Not Rachel.
Someone else.
The date was from two months ago.
The words blurred for a moment.
Then I read them.
*Woman: You said your wife would never find out.*
*Andre: She won’t. She never questions me.*
My hands started shaking.
But there was another message underneath.
*Woman: What about Rachel?*
*Andre: Rachel was a mistake. I handled it.*
I stopped breathing.
Handled it.
Like people were problems.
Like women were situations.
Like lives were things he could clean up.
Another message appeared from Rachel.
*There’s more you need to see.*
Then:
*Meet me tomorrow. Alone.*
I stared at the screen.
I should have been afraid.
Maybe I was.
But something else was growing stronger.
A need to know.
A need to finally see the entire truth.
The next morning, I left before Andre woke up.
I didn’t leave a note.
I didn’t tell him where I was going.
For years, I had explained myself to him.
Every decision.
Every feeling.
Every little thing.
I was done asking permission to exist.
Rachel sent me an address.
A small coffee shop across town.
When I arrived, I almost turned around.
Because I expected someone who looked like the enemy.
Someone I could blame.
Someone who made this easier.
Instead, I saw a woman sitting alone near the window.
She looked tired.
Not dramatic.
Not angry.
Just exhausted.
She had one hand resting protectively over her stomach.
Even before I reached the table, I knew.
The baby.
Rachel stood when she saw me.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then she whispered:
“You look exactly how I thought you would.””
I froze.
“What does that mean?””
She looked down.
“It means he chose well.””
The words hurt.
I sat across from her.
“You knew about me.””
“Yes.””
“How long?””
She swallowed.
“From the beginning.””
My chest tightened.
“The beginning?””
Rachel nodded.
“He told me you two were separated.””
I stared at her.
“We weren’t.””
“I know that now.””
“You didn’t check?””
She looked ashamed.
“I believed him.””
That sentence surprised me.
Because it sounded exactly like something I would have said.
I believed him.
Rachel looked at my bruised eye.
Her face changed.
“Did he do that?””
I looked away.
The silence answered.
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Oh my God.””
“Don’t.””
She looked at me.
“Don’t what?””
“Don’t feel sorry for me.””
Her expression softened.
“I don’t.””
That surprised me.
“I feel sorry for both of us.””
The words sat between us.
Two women who had been fighting over a story neither of us wrote.
I looked at her stomach.
“How far along?””
“Six months.””
Six months.
My mind tried to process it.
Six months ago, Andre and I had celebrated our anniversary.
He had taken me to a fancy restaurant.
He had held my hand across the table.
He had told me he was lucky to have me.
While another woman was carrying his child.
“I didn’t know what to do,” Rachel whispered.
“Why tell me now?””
She looked at me.
“Because yesterday he came to my apartment.””
My body went still.
“What?””
“He was angry.””
“What did he say?””
Rachel hesitated.
Then she reached into her bag.
She pulled out a small envelope.
“He said if I told you, he would make sure I regretted it.””
My fingers went cold.
“What’s in the envelope?””
Rachel pushed it toward me.
“Proof.””
I looked down.
Inside was a copy of a document.
My eyes moved across the page.
And one sentence made my entire world stop.
*Emergency medical report.*
The date.
The location.
The name.
Andre Williams.
But it wasn’t about Rachel.
It wasn’t about the baby.
It was about something that happened three years ago.
Something Andre had never told me.
Something that explained why he had changed.
Why the man I married disappeared.
Rachel watched my face.
“Simone…”
I looked up.
“What is this?””
Her voice dropped.
“Something Andre has spent years making sure you never found out.””
I turned the paper over.
And on the back was a handwritten note.
A note that wasn’t from Rachel.
It was from Andre.
May you like
And it started with:
*If Simone ever finds this, she needs to know the truth about the night I changed.*
