Chapter 8: The Price of a Father's Love
Daniel arrived at 8:30 the following morning.
He brought a second attorney, a family-law specialist named Patricia Moore, and a thick folder of legal documents.
Marcus had spent the night on the couch outside Jordan's bedroom.
Every time his son moved, Marcus woke up.
He wasn't taking any chances.
Patricia sat at the dining table.
“First, I want to make something clear,” she said.
“Jordan's adoption is legally finalized. Richard cannot simply walk into court and demand custody because he believes he is the biological father.””
Marcus nodded.
“Can he challenge it?””
“He can try. But the circumstances matter. We need the original adoption records, the consent documents, and evidence of any prior agreements.””
Daniel placed a document on the table.
“We obtained the adoption file this morning.””
Marcus looked down.
His name appeared on the certificate.
Jordan Williams.
Father: Marcus Williams.
The adoption had been finalized when Jordan was three.
Patricia pointed to the next page.
“Rachel signed this voluntarily. There is no indication the adoption was temporary or conditional.””
Marcus exhaled.
“Good.””
“But there's another issue,” Patricia continued.
“The insurance policy and the forged guardianship documents suggest someone may have been preparing to interfere with your parental authority.””
Marcus looked at Daniel.
“Can we stop them?””
“We can challenge the documents and seek appropriate protective orders. But we need evidence of the threats and the attempts to access Jordan's financial accounts.””
Marcus opened his laptop.
“I have the restaurant footage.””
Daniel nodded.
“That's useful.””
“And Rachel's recording.””
Patricia listened carefully as Marcus played the relevant section.
When the recording ended, she folded her hands.
“This establishes a possible connection between Vanessa and Richard before your marriage. We should preserve the original recording and obtain a professional copy.””
Marcus nodded.
Then Daniel placed another document on the table.
“We also investigated Richard's company.””
Marcus looked up.
“What did you find?””
“Cole Property Holdings has substantial outstanding debt.””
“How much?””
“Approximately $640,000.””
Marcus leaned back.
“Why?””
“Several failed property investments. There are also two civil judgments against the company.””
Patricia looked at the paperwork.
“And Vanessa?””
Daniel opened another folder.
“She has been making regular transfers to Richard's company for almost a year.””
Marcus frowned.
“From where?””
“Her personal account. But some of the deposits originated from your household account.””
Marcus stared.
“How much?””
Daniel slid a spreadsheet toward him.
$47,850.
Marcus read the total twice.
“Forty-seven thousand dollars?””
“That's what we can currently trace.””
Marcus looked at the individual transactions.
There were transfers of $450, $520, $600, and several larger payments.
The same amounts Evelyn had documented from Jordan's earnings appeared repeatedly.
His son's rent money had been going to Richard.
Marcus felt physically sick.
Patricia spoke carefully.
“This may indicate that Jordan's money was being diverted to cover Richard's debts.””
Marcus looked at the spreadsheet.
“And the insurance policy?””
Daniel nodded.
“Possibly part of the same arrangement. We need the insurer's internal records.””
Marcus pushed his chair back.
“I'm calling the police.””
Patricia nodded.
“We can help you organize the evidence.””
At that moment, Jordan entered the dining room.
He was wearing a clean blue sweatshirt.
His hair was combed.
He looked at the unfamiliar people around the table and stopped.
Marcus immediately stood.
“Hey, buddy. Come here.””
Jordan approached.
“Who are they?””
“This is Patricia. She's a lawyer helping us make sure nobody can take advantage of you.””
Jordan looked worried.
“Am I going to court?””
“Not today.””
“Will Richard be there?””
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
Jordan hesitated.
Then he asked:
“Can I go to school?””
Marcus glanced at Patricia.
She nodded.
“Of course. We can arrange safe transportation and make sure the school knows who is authorized to pick him up.””
Jordan looked relieved.
“Can I take my lunch?””
Marcus almost smiled.
“I'm making you one.””
The boy nodded and headed toward the kitchen.
Patricia watched him leave.
“Has he spoken to a counselor?””
“Not yet.””
“I recommend we arrange one. He's experienced a lot of stress.””
Marcus nodded.
“Whatever he needs.””
After breakfast, Evelyn drove Jordan to school.
Marcus remained at home with Daniel and Patricia.
At 10:15 a.m., the doorbell rang.
A delivery driver stood outside holding a large envelope.
“Signature required.””
Marcus signed.
The envelope was from Heritage Mutual.
Inside was a letter requesting clarification regarding Jordan's insurance policy.
There was also a copy of the original application.
Daniel examined it.
“Look at this.””
Marcus leaned closer.
The policy listed Jordan's date of birth correctly.
His medical history was described in detail.
But the most disturbing section was the declaration.
It stated that Jordan was living with both legal parents and that the policyholder had full authority to purchase life insurance on his behalf.
Marcus read the final page.
The signature appeared again.
His forged signature.
Below it was Vanessa's electronic authorization.
Daniel looked up.
“This is enough to support a formal fraud investigation.””
Marcus turned another page.
There was a secondary document.
A change-of-beneficiary request.
The original beneficiary was Vanessa Williams.
But the proposed new beneficiary was Richard Cole.
Marcus stared.
“They were changing it?””
Daniel nodded.
“The request was submitted two weeks ago. It hasn't been processed.””
Patricia looked alarmed.
“Why would Vanessa transfer the beneficiary designation to Richard?””
Nobody answered.
Then Marcus noticed a handwritten note attached to the application.
It was in Vanessa's handwriting.
Once the custody arrangement is complete, transfer control to Richard.
Marcus felt a chill.
They weren't merely trying to take Jordan's inheritance.
They were trying to establish legal control over him.
His phone rang.
It was the school.
Marcus answered immediately.
“Hello?””
“Mr. Williams? This is Ms. Carter, the school administrator.””
“Yes. Is Jordan okay?””
“He's safe, but there's a situation.””
Marcus stood.
“What happened?””
“A woman came to the front office asking to collect him.””
“Who?””
“Vanessa Williams.””
Marcus's stomach tightened.
“She isn't authorized to collect him today.””
“We checked the records. She presented a document claiming temporary guardianship.””
Marcus looked at Patricia.
She immediately stood.
“Don't release him,” Marcus said.
“I'm coming.””
The administrator answered quickly.
“We haven't. Jordan is with the counselor.””
Marcus ended the call.
Daniel grabbed his keys.
“Let's go.””
They arrived at the school twenty minutes later.
Vanessa was standing in the reception area.
She looked perfectly composed.
A cream-colored handbag rested on her arm.
When she saw Marcus, she smiled.
“There you are.””
Marcus didn't return the smile.
“What are you doing here?””
“I'm taking Jordan home.””
“No, you're not.””
Vanessa held up a folder.
“I have legal authorization.””
Patricia stepped forward.
“I'm Patricia Moore, Mr. Williams's attorney. May I see the document?””
Vanessa hesitated.
Then she handed it over.
Patricia examined the first page.
“This is not a valid guardianship order.””
Vanessa frowned.
“It was signed.””
“By whom?””
“Marcus.””
Patricia looked at the signature.
“Mr. Williams did not sign this.””
Vanessa's expression hardened.
“You can't prove that.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“I can.””
He took out the original document Daniel had obtained.
The two signatures didn't match.
The school administrator looked between them.
“I'm sorry, Mrs. Williams, but we cannot release Jordan without proper authorization.””
Vanessa turned toward Marcus.
“You're making a fool of yourself.””
Marcus's voice remained steady.
“No. I'm protecting my son.””
“You're letting your mother manipulate you!””
“Stop using my mother as an excuse.””
Vanessa lowered her voice.
“You have no idea what you're doing. Richard is not going to accept this.””
Marcus stared at her.
“Then Richard can explain himself to the police.””
For the first time, Vanessa looked frightened.
She quickly gathered her handbag.
“You'll regret this.””
Patricia stepped closer.
“Mrs. Williams, please remain available for questions regarding the documents you've presented.””
Vanessa ignored her and walked toward the exit.
Marcus watched her leave.
Then he asked the administrator to bring Jordan out.
A few minutes later, Jordan appeared with the school counselor.
He looked pale.
“Dad?””
Marcus opened his arms.
Jordan ran toward him.
“I'm sorry.””
Marcus frowned.
“For what?””
“Vanessa said I was causing trouble.””
Marcus knelt.
“You didn't cause any of this.””
Jordan hugged him tightly.
“Can we go home?””
“Of course.””
As they walked toward the parking lot, Marcus noticed a black SUV across the street.
A man was sitting behind the wheel.
The window was partially lowered.
Marcus recognized him.
Richard Cole.
Their eyes met.
Richard lifted his phone.
Then he pointed it directly at Jordan.
Marcus immediately stepped in front of his son.
“Get in the car,” he told Daniel.
Daniel opened the passenger door.
Jordan climbed into the back seat.
Marcus approached the SUV.
Richard smiled.
“Beautiful day, isn't it?””
Marcus stopped several feet away.
“Stay away from my son.””
Richard lowered his phone.
“You should be thanking me.””
“For what?””
“For giving him a chance to know his real father.””
Marcus stared at him.
“You abandoned him.””
Richard shrugged.
“People make mistakes.””
“You threatened his mother.””
“Rachel was difficult.””
Marcus's jaw tightened.
“Don't say her name.””
Richard leaned toward the window.
“Listen, Marcus. Vanessa isn't your enemy. She's trying to fix something Rachel destroyed.””
“What did Rachel destroy?””
Richard smiled.
“An agreement.””
“What agreement?””
Richard glanced toward the car.
“Ask your son what happened at the restaurant.””
Marcus frowned.
“What are you talking about?””
“Ask him what Vanessa promised him if he helped us.””
Marcus turned toward the back seat.
Jordan was staring at the SUV.
His face had gone white.
Richard laughed.
“Looks like he remembers.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“What did you make him do?””
Richard rolled up the window.
The SUV pulled away.
Marcus returned to the car.
Jordan was trembling.
“Buddy, what did he mean?””
Jordan looked at his father.
Then he reached into his backpack.
He pulled out a small folded envelope.
“I was going to tell you.””
Marcus took it carefully.
Inside was a photograph.
It showed Jordan sitting at a restaurant table with Richard and Vanessa.
On the back, someone had written:
First meeting. Agreement confirmed.
There was another paper.
A handwritten note from Vanessa.
Jordan, if you cooperate, your father will never have to know what happened to Rachel.
Marcus read it twice.
Then he looked at his son.
“What happened to your mother?””
Jordan started crying.
“I don't know.””
Marcus held him.
But Jordan suddenly pulled away.
“I remember something now.””
“What?””
“The day Mom died.””
Marcus went still.
Jordan stared at the envelope.
“I remember Vanessa being at the hospital.””
Marcus's blood ran cold.
“She was there?””
Jordan nodded.
“She came into Mom's room.””
He swallowed.
“And she told Mom that everything was going to be okay.””
Marcus stared at him.
“Did your mother know her?””
Jordan nodded.
“Mom started crying.””
He paused.
“Then she told Vanessa to get away from me.””
Marcus couldn't speak.
Jordan looked directly at his father.
“And, Dad?””
May you like
“Yes?””
“Vanessa was holding a little bottle when she left.””
