Chapter 7: The Father in the Photograph
Marcus stared at the photograph until the edges blurred.
Richard Cole was holding a newborn baby.
The baby's tiny fingers were wrapped around Richard's thumb. A hospital bracelet circled one impossibly small wrist.
On the back, Rachel had written:
Jordan and Richard. The truth I was afraid to tell.
Marcus looked at Evelyn.
“Tell me this isn't real.””
His mother didn't answer.
“Mom!””
Evelyn slowly lowered herself onto an old wooden chair.
“Rachel told me something shortly before she died. Something I didn't fully understand.””
Marcus held up the photograph.
“Was Richard Jordan's biological father?””
“I believe so.””
Marcus stumbled backward.
“No. Rachel told me his father died before he was born.””
“I know.””
“She said he was a man she'd dated briefly. She said he died in an accident.””
Evelyn looked down.
“She was trying to protect you.””
“Protect me from what? Knowing the truth about my own son?””
“Marcus, listen.””
He shook his head.
“I adopted Jordan. I raised him. I was there for every birthday, every fever, every nightmare. And now you're telling me the man who has been threatening my family might be his biological father?””
Evelyn nodded.
“Rachel believed Richard was dangerous.””
Marcus looked at Jordan.
His son was standing near the basement stairs, clutching the photograph of his mother.
“Buddy, I need you to go upstairs.””
Jordan shook his head.
“I want to know.””
Marcus crouched.
“I know. But this is grown-up information, and I need to understand it before I explain it to you.””
“Am I not your son anymore?””
Marcus felt something break inside him.
He immediately pulled Jordan into his arms.
“You are my son. Nothing changes that. Not a photograph, not a blood test, not anything.””
Jordan buried his face against his father's shoulder.
“Promise?””
“Forever.””
Evelyn approached them.
“Your mother loved you more than anything, sweetheart. Whatever happened between the adults was never your fault.””
Jordan nodded, but his eyes remained fixed on the photograph.
“Why did she hide him?””
Nobody answered.
Marcus helped Jordan upstairs and asked Evelyn to stay with him.
Then he returned to the basement.
The blue box contained more documents than he had initially noticed.
He spread them across a folding table.
There were hospital records, bank statements, photographs, and several letters.
One medical document caught his attention.
It was dated two days after Jordan's birth.
The father's name had been left blank.
A handwritten note appeared in the margin:
Paternity disputed. Mother requests confidentiality.
Marcus read it twice.
Then he found a letter addressed to Rachel.
It was from Richard.
Rachel,
You cannot keep my son from me forever. We agreed that he would have a future with me. I have every right to know where he is.
If you refuse to cooperate, I will find another way.
Richard.
Marcus's hands tightened around the paper.
Another letter followed.
This one was from Rachel to Richard.
You abandoned us when I needed you. You disappeared for months. You cannot suddenly return and demand a child because you've decided you want one.
Jordan has a father who loves him. He has a home. He has a family.
Leave us alone.
Marcus placed the letters side by side.
Then he noticed the dates.
Richard's threatening letter had been written only four months before Rachel died.
He picked up his phone and called Daniel.
“I need you to come over.””
“What's happened?””
“Richard Cole is Jordan's biological father.””
Silence.
Then Daniel asked, “Are you certain?””
“I have photographs and letters. I need a DNA test, but there's no doubt Rachel believed it.””
Daniel took a breath.
“Marcus, we need to be careful. If Richard is trying to establish parental rights or interfere with the adoption, we need to know immediately.””
“Jordan is legally my son.””
“Then we'll obtain the adoption records and make sure everything is properly documented.””
Marcus looked at the letter again.
“There's more. Richard has been working with Vanessa.””
“I suspected that.””
“She's also been trying to access Jordan's inheritance.””
Daniel paused.
“Send me everything you found.””
Marcus agreed.
After the call, he continued searching.
At the bottom of the box was a small cassette recorder.
He pressed the play button.
At first, there was only static.
Then Rachel's voice filled the basement.
“Marcus, if you're hearing this, I'm sorry.””
Marcus stopped breathing.
It was his wife.
Her voice sounded tired, but unmistakably hers.
“I didn't tell you everything about Richard because I was afraid you'd try to confront him. He has connections I don't understand. He knows people who can make problems disappear.””
There was a pause.
Then Rachel continued.
“I found out he was working with Vanessa. They were together before I met you. She knew about Jordan from the beginning.””
Marcus leaned closer.
“Vanessa told Richard that if he helped her get access to the trust, she would help him get custody of Jordan. I don't know what they really want, but I know they aren't doing it because they love him.””
The recording crackled.
Rachel's breathing became audible.
“I think Vanessa is planning to marry someone who can provide access to the money. I think she's looking for a way into your life.””
Marcus's heart began pounding.
Rachel continued.
“If that happens, please don't let her near our son.””
The recording ended.
Marcus stood frozen.
Vanessa hadn't entered his life by chance.
She had known who he was.
She had known about Jordan.
She had known about Rachel.
And she had deliberately married him.
His phone vibrated.
An unknown number.
Marcus answered.
“Hello?””
A man's voice came through.
“Marcus Williams?””
“Who is this?””
“Richard Cole.””
Marcus tightened his grip.
“What do you want?””
“I think it's time we stopped pretending.””
“There's nothing to pretend about.””
Richard chuckled.
“You found the photograph, didn't you?””
Marcus went cold.
“How do you know about that?””
“Because Vanessa called me.””
Marcus looked toward the ceiling.
“Stay away from my son.””
Richard sighed.
“You're making this difficult.””
“Jordan is my son.””
“Biologically, he isn't.””
“Legally, he is. And emotionally, he has been mine since he was three years old.””
Richard laughed.
“That's touching.””
Marcus's voice dropped.
“Why are you doing this?””
“Because I have a right to know my child.””
“You had years to be his father.””
“I had reasons for staying away.””
“Then explain them.””
Richard was silent.
Finally, he said:
“Meet me tomorrow. Alone.””
“No.””
“Then you'll never know what Rachel was hiding.””
Marcus glanced at the cassette recorder.
“What did Rachel hide?””
Richard lowered his voice.
“She wasn't telling you the truth about Jordan's inheritance.””
Marcus's stomach tightened.
“What about it?””
“Your wife didn't leave that money for Jordan.””
“Rachel was his mother.””
“She was protecting something that belonged to me.””
Marcus almost laughed.
“That's ridiculous.””
“Is it? Ask your mother who originally funded the trust.””
The call ended.
Marcus stood in the basement, staring at the phone.
Then he heard a soft sound behind him.
Jordan was standing at the bottom of the stairs.
“Dad?””
Marcus turned.
“Buddy, I thought you were upstairs.””
“I couldn't sleep.””
Jordan looked at the cassette recorder.
“Was that Mom?””
Marcus nodded.
Jordan slowly walked toward him.
“Can I hear her voice?””
Marcus hesitated.
Then he pressed play.
Rachel's voice filled the basement again.
Jordan closed his eyes.
A small smile appeared on his face.
For several minutes, he listened without speaking.
When the recording ended, he wiped his cheeks.
“I remember that voice.””
Marcus knelt beside him.
“Of course you do.””
Jordan looked at the photograph again.
“Dad, do you think that man really wants me?””
Marcus swallowed.
“I don't know what he wants.””
Jordan stared at the floor.
“Vanessa said he was going to buy me a new bedroom. She said I'd have to call him Dad.””
Marcus pulled him close.
“You never have to call anyone anything you don't want to.””
Jordan nodded.
Then he whispered:
“Dad, there's something else I didn't tell you.””
Marcus looked at him.
“What is it?””
“Vanessa took me to meet Richard once.””
Marcus went completely still.
“When?””
“About three weeks ago.””
“Where?””
“At a restaurant near school.””
Marcus struggled to keep his voice calm.
“What happened?””
Jordan looked frightened.
“He asked me if I remembered him.””
“Did you?””
Jordan shook his head.
“He said he was my real father. He said you weren't.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
“What did you say?””
“I told him you were my dad.””
Jordan's voice broke.
“Then he said that soon I'd find out the truth.””
Marcus held his son tightly.
But Jordan wasn't finished.
“He also asked me if I knew where Mom kept the blue box.””
Marcus pulled back.
“What?””
Jordan nodded.
“He wanted to know if Grandma had it.””
Marcus stared at him.
Then he asked the question that made Jordan begin crying.
“Did Vanessa know about the box?””
Jordan nodded.
“She told him I knew where it was.””
Marcus looked toward the basement shelves.
The documents were scattered across the table.
But one thing was now painfully clear.
Richard hadn't returned to find his son.
May you like
He had returned to find whatever Rachel had hidden.
And he believed Jordan was the key.
