Chapter 5: The Man From Her Past
Richard Cole didn't knock.
He walked straight through the front door at 11:58 a.m., as if he had lived in the house for years.
Vanessa welcomed him with a kiss on the cheek.
Marcus watched from the living room.
He recognized Richard immediately.
Tall. Broad shoulders. Expensive watch. The same arrogant smile Marcus remembered from the few times they had met.
Richard placed his brown envelope on the coffee table.
“Marcus.””
“Richard.””
“Been a while.””
“Not long enough.””
Vanessa shot Marcus a warning look.
“Can we please be civil?””
Richard chuckled.
“Still protective of your little family, I see.””
Marcus didn't answer.
Daniel had advised him to keep the conversation calm and record any relevant statements only through lawful means. Marcus had also informed his attorney about the meeting.
Richard sat down without being invited.
“So,” he said, crossing one leg over the other, “I hear there's been a misunderstanding.””
Marcus stared at him.
“Which misunderstanding?””
Richard opened the envelope.
“The paperwork.””
Vanessa sat beside him.
“Marcus, I can explain everything.””
“Then explain it.””
Richard slid a document across the table.
It was a proposed property agreement.
Marcus read the first page.
His home was listed as collateral for a private loan.
The amount was $280,000.
The proposed lender was Cole Property Holdings.
Marcus looked up.
“Why is my house listed here?””
Richard shrugged.
“It's a preliminary agreement.””
“You don't own this property.””
“Not yet.””
Marcus's eyes narrowed.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa leaned forward.
“Richard was helping us consolidate some debts.””
Marcus turned toward her.
“We?””
“Our debts.””
“I don't have debts.””
Vanessa's jaw tightened.
Richard smiled.
“Come on, Marcus. You own a successful construction company. You know how business works. Sometimes people need liquidity.””
“Not by forging my signature.””
Richard's smile disappeared for half a second.
Then he laughed.
“That's a serious accusation.””
“It's a serious document.””
Vanessa reached for Marcus's hand.
“Please. Let's not turn this into a fight.””
Marcus pulled away.
“Where did the $280,000 go?””
Richard answered before she could.
“Some went into Vanessa's restaurant. Some covered personal expenses.””
Marcus looked at his wife.
“You told me the restaurant was profitable.””
“It is.””
“Then why does it need a private loan?””
Vanessa stared at the carpet.
Richard leaned forward.
“Because your wife has been helping me.””
Marcus went still.
“Helping you with what?””
Richard glanced at Vanessa.
She gave him a small shake of her head.
But Richard ignored it.
“Old business. Nothing you need to worry about.””
Marcus stared.
“Then why use my house?””
Richard's expression hardened.
“Because Vanessa promised it would be available.””
Marcus stood.
“She had no authority to promise you anything.””
Richard shrugged.
“Take that up with your wife.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“Tell him.””
She swallowed.
“Marcus, I was trying to protect our family.””
“From what?””
“Financial problems.””
“What financial problems?””
Richard interrupted.
“Look, we don't have all day.””
Marcus turned toward him.
“You've got thirty seconds to explain why my son's name is on an insurance policy with Vanessa as the beneficiary.””
The room went silent.
Vanessa's face drained of color.
Richard slowly leaned back.
“That's not something you should be discussing.””
Marcus stared.
“So you know about it.””
Richard didn't answer.
Marcus took out his phone and placed it on the table.
“I've already spoken with my attorney.””
Richard's expression changed.
“Your attorney?””
“Yes.””
Vanessa immediately stood.
“You had no right to do that!””
Marcus looked at her.
“I had every right.””
Richard closed the envelope.
“Maybe we should leave.””
“No,” Marcus said.
“We're not finished.””
Richard rose.
“You should be careful, Marcus. You don't know everything about this situation.””
“Then tell me.””
Richard adjusted his jacket.
“Ask Vanessa why she chose Jordan for the policy.””
Marcus felt a cold wave move through him.
“What does that mean?””
Richard looked at Vanessa.
She was staring at him with open fury.
“Shut up,” she whispered.
Richard smiled.
“Ask her.””
Then he walked toward the door.
Marcus followed him.
“Richard!””
The man stopped.
“Why was your name on the application as an emergency contact?””
Richard turned.
“Because I know the family.””
“You're not family.””
Richard's smile vanished.
“No,” he said quietly.
“I suppose I'm not.””
He opened the door and left.
Vanessa stood motionless.
Marcus turned toward her.
“Now you're going to tell me everything.””
She folded her arms.
“I don't know what Richard is talking about.””
“Stop lying.””
“I'm not!””
“Why is he involved in Jordan's insurance policy?””
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
“Because he helped me when nobody else would.””
“With what?””
She looked toward the stairs.
“Can we talk privately?””
“No.””
“Marcus, please.””
He shook his head.
“Not another secret.””
Vanessa took a shaky breath.
Then she spoke.
“Richard was supposed to help me get custody of Jordan.””
Marcus stared.
“Custody?””
“Yes.””
“Why would you need custody of my son?””
“Because you're always working! Because he needed someone who could actually be there!””
Marcus laughed in disbelief.
“You denied him dinner, made him work in your restaurant, and threatened to send him away. That's your idea of caring for him?””
Vanessa's face hardened.
“You don't understand what it's like living with a child who isn't yours.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“Then you should never have married someone with a child.””
Vanessa looked away.
For several seconds, the only sound was the refrigerator humming in the kitchen.
Then she said something that changed the conversation.
“Jordan isn't the only person whose life would be ruined if you exposed everything.””
Marcus frowned.
“What?””
Vanessa walked toward the staircase.
“You think Richard is the problem? He's just the beginning.””
She stopped on the second step.
“Ask your mother why she took the money.””
Marcus shook his head.
“We already discussed that.””
“No. You discussed the money she admitted taking.””
Vanessa looked over her shoulder.
“Ask her what she knows about Rachel's last months.””
Marcus went still.
His first wife's name had barely been spoken in that house since her death.
“What does Rachel have to do with this?””
Vanessa smiled faintly.
“More than you think.””
Then she disappeared upstairs.
Marcus immediately called Evelyn.
“Mom, I need you to come home.””
“What's wrong?””
“Vanessa just mentioned Rachel.””
There was a long silence.
Then Evelyn whispered:
“I was afraid she'd bring that up.””
Marcus sat down.
“What are you talking about?””
“Marcus, listen to me. I need you to understand something before you hear the rest.””
“What?””
“Rachel asked me to protect Jordan before she died.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
“Protect him from what?””
Evelyn's voice broke.
“From Vanessa.””
The call ended.
Marcus stared at the phone.
His mother had never trusted Vanessa.
He knew that much.
But he had always believed it was because Evelyn was fiercely protective of Rachel's memory.
Now he wondered whether there had been something much darker.
An hour later, Evelyn arrived.
She walked straight into the living room, carrying a small leather handbag.
Marcus stood.
“Tell me.””
Evelyn sat down.
“Rachel came to see me three weeks before she died.””
Marcus swallowed.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because she made me promise not to.””
“Mom, she's gone. Whatever she told you, I have a right to know.””
Evelyn nodded.
“She was frightened.””
Marcus frowned.
“Of what?””
“Of losing Jordan.””
He shook his head.
“Why would she think that?””
Evelyn opened her handbag.
She removed a folded letter, yellowed around the edges.
“Rachel had discovered that someone had been accessing her medical records.””
Marcus stared.
“What?””
“She didn't know who. But she believed someone was gathering information about her health and financial affairs.””
Marcus sat down.
“Was it Vanessa?””
“I don't know.””
Evelyn unfolded the letter.
Rachel's handwriting was unmistakable.
Mom,
If something happens to me, please make sure Jordan stays with Marcus.
There are people who believe they have a right to him because of things that happened before I met Marcus.
I thought those problems were behind me.
I was wrong.
Marcus read the letter again.
“Who were these people?””
Evelyn shook her head.
“Rachel never told me their names.””
“Did she mention Richard?””
Evelyn's eyes widened.
“Richard Cole?””
Marcus nodded.
“Vanessa's former husband.””
Evelyn slowly sat back.
“Then this is worse than I thought.””
Marcus rubbed his face.
“Why?””
“Because Richard was the man Rachel was afraid of.””
Marcus felt the room tilt.
“What?””
Evelyn looked toward the staircase.
“Rachel once told me that Richard had threatened her years before you met. She said he wanted something from her, and she refused to give it to him.””
“What did he want?””
Evelyn shook her head.
“She never explained.””
Marcus stood.
“Why didn't she tell me?””
“She was afraid you'd confront him. She was afraid that would put Jordan in danger.””
Marcus stared at the letter.
Then he noticed something.
A small handwritten note on the back.
He turned it over.
There was a date.
And beneath it, a name.
*VANESSA COLE.*
Marcus looked at his mother.
“Vanessa's maiden name was Cole.””
Evelyn nodded.
“Yes.””
Marcus felt sick.
Rachel's letter was dated six years before Vanessa entered their lives.
He looked toward the staircase again.
“Mom, are you telling me my wife knew Rachel before she married me?””
Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.
“I think she knew much more than she ever admitted.””
Marcus immediately called Daniel.
“Find out everything you can about Vanessa Cole and Richard Cole. I want their financial records, business connections, and any connection to Rachel.””
Daniel agreed.
But before Marcus could end the call, Evelyn reached into her handbag and removed one final photograph.
It showed Rachel standing outside a hospital.
Beside her was a man.
Richard Cole.
And standing behind them, smiling at the camera, was Vanessa.
Marcus stared at the photograph.
The date printed on the back was six months before Rachel died.
He looked at his mother.
“Why would my wife be standing beside my first wife?””
May you like
Evelyn's voice trembled.
“Because, Marcus, I don't believe Vanessa met you by accident.””
