Chapter 6: The Mother Who Signed Away Her Son
I stared at Elena.
For several seconds, I couldn't make sense of what she had said.
"Who told you that?""
She looked down at her hands.
"Dr. Whitmore.""
"The same doctor who worked for my father?""
She nodded.
"Four years ago, after the delivery, he came into my room. He told me you had suffered a serious complication.""
I frowned.
"What complication?""
"He said you had a blood clot. That your condition was unstable. That you needed emergency surgery.""
I shook my head.
"I never had surgery.""
"I know that now.""
She swallowed.
"But at the time, I was recovering from childbirth. I was frightened, exhausted, and still under medication.""
I sat beside her.
"What did he ask you to sign?""
"A temporary guardianship agreement.""
I stared at her.
"Temporary?""
"He said the baby needed specialized care. He told me that if I refused, the hospital might not be able to treat him properly.""
"And he said I would die?""
Elena nodded.
"He told me Richard was arranging your treatment. He said the family could only afford it if the guardianship papers were signed.""
I felt sick.
"Why would Richard have anything to do with my medical care?""
"Because Whitmore told me you had given him authority.""
I stood and walked toward the window.
My brother had been involved from the beginning.
He had taken advantage of a frightened woman who had just given birth.
He had convinced her that her husband was dying.
And then he had stolen our child.
I turned back.
"Did you ever see the paperwork again?""
"Only once.""
"When?""
"Two days later. Whitmore came back and told me Noah had died.""
My throat tightened.
"What did you do?""
"I begged to see him.""
She covered her face.
"He said the hospital had already transferred his body. He told me there was nothing left to see.""
I sat beside her again.
"Elena, why didn't you tell me when you recovered?""
She looked at me.
"I tried.""
"What?""
"I called you.""
My heart stopped.
"When?""
"From the hospital. The first night after the delivery.""
I shook my head.
"I never received a call.""
"I spoke to someone.""
"Who?""
"Richard.""
I stared at her.
"What did he say?""
Elena's voice cracked.
"He told me you were unconscious. Then he said you had asked him to handle everything.""
I covered my mouth.
"God.""
"He brought me a document. He said you had signed it.""
"Signed what?""
"A statement confirming that Noah had died and authorizing the hospital to handle the remains.""
I felt dizzy.
I had never signed such a document.
Then I remembered the stack of papers.
The night of the delivery.
The hospital corridor.
The nurse who had brought me forms while I was crying.
I had signed several pages without reading them.
"Do you remember what the document looked like?""
Elena nodded.
"It had your signature.""
I looked at her.
"But I didn't sign it.""
She began crying.
"I know.""
I took her hand.
"How?""
"Because I saw your signature on the original trust documents. It wasn't the same.""
I felt my jaw tighten.
"Then somebody forged it.""
"Yes.""
I leaned closer.
"Elena, we need to find Noah. We need to find him before Richard moves him again.""
She looked terrified.
"Marcus, I know where he might be.""
I stopped.
"What?""
She swallowed.
"Margaret's house.""
I frowned.
"My aunt's house?""
Elena nodded.
"She was the woman who visited me during the first month I was imprisoned.""
I felt my stomach turn.
"She knew you were alive?""
"Yes.""
"She visited you?""
"She brought food. Sometimes clothes. She told me she was helping me.""
Elena looked away.
"Then she showed me photographs of Noah.""
I stood.
"Why would she do that?""
"She wanted me to believe he was happy. She said he had a beautiful room, toys, a garden. She told me he called her Mommy.""
My chest tightened.
"Did he?""
"I don't know.""
Elena reached for my wrist.
"But Marcus, there's something you must understand about Margaret.""
"What?""
"She didn't just take Noah.""
She swallowed.
"She helped them choose which child to take.""
I froze.
"What do you mean?""
Elena's voice dropped.
"She told me the plan started before I gave birth. She said they had been watching several pregnant women connected to wealthy families.""
I stared.
"Why?""
"Because they wanted children whose identities could be changed without attracting attention.""
My stomach twisted.
I thought about the second birth certificate.
The altered date.
The medical reports.
The photographs.
"Was Noah the only child?""
Elena shook her head.
"No.""
I sat down slowly.
"How many?""
"I don't know. But I heard them talking about another boy.""
"Where?""
"In the room beneath your father's study.""
She looked at me.
"They called him Daniel.""
I felt cold.
Daniel Reeves.
My attorney.
I looked toward the door.
He had been standing in the hallway.
He entered slowly.
"Elena, what did you just say?""
She stared at him.
For the first time since I had found her, she looked genuinely afraid.
"Daniel...""
He approached the bed.
"Do you know something about this?""
Elena shook her head.
"No. I only heard the name.""
Daniel looked at me.
"Marcus, I need to explain something.""
I stood.
"Go ahead.""
He took a deep breath.
"When your father hired me, he asked me to investigate irregularities in the family medical trust.""
"And?""
"I found several records involving children who had been placed under temporary guardianship.""
"How many?""
"Three.""
I stared at him.
"Three children?""
He nodded.
"Your son was one of them.""
"Who were the others?""
"I never identified them.""
Elena closed her eyes.
"One of them was called Daniel.""
The room went silent.
Daniel looked down.
Then he slowly rolled up his left sleeve.
There was a small scar near his wrist.
He touched it.
"My mother told me I was adopted," he said quietly.
I stared at him.
"What?""
"I was told my biological parents died in an accident. I was raised by a family in Pennsylvania. My adoption records were sealed.""
He looked at Elena.
"How old was the other boy?""
"About four.""
Daniel swallowed.
"That's the age I was when I was adopted.""
I stepped backward.
"Are you saying...""
"I don't know.""
He took out his phone.
"I need to make a call.""
He walked toward the window.
I watched him.
Something felt wrong.
Not because I suspected Daniel.
But because the world suddenly seemed full of people who had spent years hiding their real identities.
Then Elena grabbed my hand.
"Marcus.""
I turned.
"Yes?""
"Don't let him take the file.""
I looked at Daniel.
"What file?""
She pointed toward his briefcase.
"The original guardianship file. Richard told me it was the only document that could prove who Noah really was.""
I looked at Daniel.
He was still on the phone.
His expression had become unreadable.
I approached him.
"Daniel.""
He turned.
"Yes?""
"What's in your briefcase?""
He frowned.
"My legal documents.""
"Show me.""
He stared at me.
"Why?""
"Because Elena says there's an original guardianship file.""
For a moment, Daniel didn't move.
Then he slowly placed his phone on the windowsill.
He opened the briefcase.
Inside were several folders.
One was marked:
*NOAH HAYES — ORIGINAL CUSTODY RECORD.*
I reached for it.
Daniel closed the briefcase.
"Marcus, wait.""
"Open it.""
"You need to understand what this means.""
"Then explain it.""
He looked at Elena.
"She doesn't know the entire story.""
My wife began trembling.
"What are you talking about?""
Daniel took a breath.
"Your son wasn't placed with Margaret because Richard wanted to steal him.""
I stared.
"Then why?""
"Because Margaret had been told that Noah was the only child who could inherit the trust.""
"That's exactly why they took him.""
Daniel shook his head.
"No. Your father had already changed the trust.""
I froze.
"What?""
Daniel opened the briefcase again.
He removed a document.
"The original agreement names a different beneficiary.""
I looked at the paper.
It wasn't Noah.
It wasn't Ava.
It wasn't me.
It was a name I had never seen before.
*Ethan Whitmore.*
I looked at Daniel.
"Who is Ethan Whitmore?""
Daniel's face changed.
He looked toward Elena.
Then he quietly said:
"Dr. Whitmore's son.""
I felt my blood run cold.
"What does a doctor's son have to do with my father's estate?""
Daniel lowered his voice.
"Because Ethan Whitmore was the first child recorded in the original succession registry.""
I stared at him.
"How is that possible?""
Daniel looked at Elena.
"Because he was born to your mother.""
The room went silent.
I couldn't breathe.
"My mother died when I was twelve.""
Daniel nodded.
"She did.""
"Then how could she have had another child?""
He placed another photograph on the bedside table.
It showed a young woman holding a newborn baby.
The woman was my mother.
I recognized her immediately.
But the baby wasn't me.
It was a boy.
On the back of the photograph was a date.
Two years before I was born.
I stared at it.
My father had another son.
A son nobody had ever mentioned.
A son who might have been connected to the doctor who had stolen mine.
Elena whispered, "Marcus...""
I looked at her.
She was crying.
"That's why Richard was so desperate.""
I shook my head.
"Why?""
"Because he wasn't trying to steal your son's inheritance.""
She swallowed.
"He was trying to hide the fact that your father had already given everything to his firstborn.""
My knees weakened.
"Who?""
Elena looked at the photograph.
"Your older brother.""
I stared at Daniel.
Then at the name on the trust document.
Ethan Whitmore.
And suddenly I understood why Richard had spent years trying to control the company.
He wasn't the rightful heir.
Neither was I.
Someone else was.
Someone whose existence had been erased before I was even born.
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
"Hello?""
A man's voice came through.
"Marcus Hayes?""
"Who is this?""
"My name is Ethan.""
I stopped breathing.
He continued.
"I think it's time we met.""
"Where are you?""
A pause.
Then he said:
"Ask your attorney why he has been protecting me for twelve years.""
I slowly turned toward Daniel.
He had gone completely pale.
And before I could ask another question, Ethan added:
"By the way, your son Noah is sitting right beside me.""
The call ended.
I stared at Daniel.
He lowered his eyes.
Then he whispered:
"I'm sorry, Marcus. I should have told you who I was working for.""
And somewhere in the hospital, a door slammed.
I turned toward the hallway.
A nurse was running toward us.
"Mr. Hayes!""
"What happened?""
She struggled to catch her breath.
"Your daughter...""
My heart stopped.
"What's wrong with Ava?""
The nurse looked terrified.
"She's gone.""
I ran.
I didn't wait for Daniel.
I didn't wait for the officers.
I ran toward the pediatric waiting area, calling my daughter's name.
Mrs. Bennett was standing beside the empty sofa.
Her face was covered in tears.
"Where is she?""
She shook her head.
"Someone came for her.""
"Who?""
She held out a folded piece of paper.
"I tried to stop him.""
I snatched it.
Three words were written across the page.
*Bring Noah home.*
Beneath them was a photograph of a little girl sitting in the back seat of a black car.
Ava was crying.
And the man sitting beside her was Richard.
I called Officer Miller.
Then I looked at Daniel.
"Tell me where Ethan is.""
Daniel stared at me.
"Marcus—"
"NOW!""
He finally spoke.
"He's at the old medical institute.""
I grabbed my coat.
"Then that's where we're going.""
Daniel shook his head.
"You don't understand. If Ethan has Noah, Richard has something much more valuable.""
"What?""
Daniel looked toward the photograph of Ava.
"The original custody file.""
My phone vibrated again.
A message from Richard appeared.
*You have one hour to bring the original file. After that, you'll never see Ava again.*
I looked at the time.
6:58 a.m.
And for the first time in my life, I realized my family wasn't simply hiding a terrible secret.
They had built an entire system around it.
A system that had stolen children, erased identities, and turned the people I loved into bargaining chips.
And now my daughter was in their hands.
May you like
I would burn every secret my father had left behind to bring her home.
Even if the truth destroyed the family name.
