Amused

Chapter 10: The Truth Beneath the Lies

"There's something you need to know about the night Ava was born.""

Mrs. Bennett's voice trembled.

Nobody moved.

Elena was gripping the hospital blanket so tightly that her knuckles had turned white. Daniel stood beside the window, holding the original registry. Noah was sitting next to his mother, while Ava watched the old housekeeper with frightened blue eyes.

I looked at the photograph on the table.

A newborn baby.

A white blanket.

A silver bracelet.

And four words written on the back.

*Ava was never your daughter.*

I slowly raised my eyes.

"Explain.""

Mrs. Bennett began crying.

"I should have told you years ago.""

"Then start talking.""

She pulled out a chair and sat down.

"Twenty-two years ago, your father brought a newborn girl into the mansion. He told me the baby belonged to a woman who had died during childbirth.""

I frowned.

"Twenty-two years?""

She nodded.

"Her name was Grace.""

I glanced at the phone.

The young woman on the screen was listening.

"That's impossible," I said.

"Grace is eighteen.""

Mrs. Bennett shook her head.

"No. I'm talking about another Grace.""

Elena covered her mouth.

Mrs. Bennett continued.

"Your father had two families. He had a daughter with a woman named Catherine before he married your mother. That baby was born in secret.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"Catherine Whitmore?""

Mrs. Bennett nodded.

"Yes.""

Daniel's face went pale.

"She was my mother.""

I stared at him.

"Your mother had a daughter?""

"She never told me.""

Mrs. Bennett looked at Daniel.

"Because she believed the child had died.""

The room went silent.

I looked at the photograph again.

"Then who was the baby?""

Mrs. Bennett lowered her head.

"She was the first child in the original registry.""

Daniel slowly opened the folder.

"That would make eight children.""

Mrs. Bennett nodded.

"Your father never admitted it publicly. He believed the family name would be destroyed if people discovered how many children had been moved through his private medical network.""

I felt anger rising.

"So he kept all of them secret?""

"He tried to control their identities. He thought he was protecting them.""

I laughed bitterly.

"That's what everyone says.""

Mrs. Bennett wiped her cheeks.

"Your father gave me the photograph and the bracelet. He told me that one day the children might come looking for their family.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because Richard threatened me.""

I turned toward her.

"What?""

She reached into her handbag and removed another envelope.

Inside were several letters.

The first was dated six years earlier.

The handwriting belonged to Richard.

Keep your mouth shut about the girl. If Marcus ever discovers what happened, you'll lose everything.

I stared at the letter.

"Did he threaten you?""

Mrs. Bennett nodded.

"He said he would have me arrested for stealing company documents. He knew I had copies of the original records.""

I looked at Daniel.

"Did you know about this?""

He shook his head.

"No.""

Mrs. Bennett placed another photograph on the table.

It showed Richard standing outside the old Hayes Medical Institute.

Beside him was a woman holding a newborn.

I recognized the woman.

Vanessa.

My stomach tightened.

"When was this taken?""

"Six years ago.""

I looked at the date.

The same month Ava was born.

"Why was Vanessa there?""

Mrs. Bennett hesitated.

"Because she was the one who brought the baby.""

My blood ran cold.

"Which baby?""

She looked directly at me.

"Ava.""

Elena began crying.

I stared at the photograph.

Vanessa.

A newborn.

Richard.

And the medical institute.

"What exactly did they do?""

Mrs. Bennett took a shaky breath.

"Vanessa had been working with Richard for months. She was involved in arranging the transfers. When Elena gave birth, the doctors told her the baby had complications.""

Elena shook her head.

"I remember.""

Mrs. Bennett nodded.

"They moved Elena to another room. They told her the baby needed emergency treatment.""

"And?""

"They brought another baby into the nursery.""

I felt sick.

"Another baby?""

"Yes.""

Mrs. Bennett pointed to the photograph.

"That was the baby Vanessa brought.""

I stared.

"Where was my real daughter?""

Mrs. Bennett's face crumpled.

"Your real daughter was taken to another facility.""

Elena let out a broken sob.

I gripped the edge of the table.

"And Ava?""

Mrs. Bennett looked at the little girl.

"She was placed in Elena's arms.""

Ava started crying.

"Why are you talking about me?""

I immediately crouched beside her.

"Sweetheart, come here.""

She wrapped her arms around my neck.

I held her close.

"You're my little girl. Nothing changes that.""

Mrs. Bennett shook her head.

"Mr. Hayes, there's something else.""

I looked up.

"Not another secret.""

She reached for the photograph.

"The baby Vanessa brought wasn't a stranger.""

Daniel suddenly understood.

His eyes widened.

"Wait.""

He looked at Mrs. Bennett.

"Are you saying Ava was Catherine's granddaughter?""

Mrs. Bennett nodded.

"Yes.""

Daniel staggered backward.

I looked between them.

"Explain.""

Daniel's voice was barely audible.

"If the first Grace was Catherine's daughter, then Ava may be connected to her family.""

Mrs. Bennett nodded again.

"Vanessa was pregnant at the same time as Elena. But Richard arranged for her baby to be registered under another identity.""

I stared.

"Why?""

"Because Vanessa's child was born with a medical condition. Richard believed the child could qualify for the inheritance through Catherine's family line.""

Daniel opened the registry.

He turned several pages.

Then he stopped.

His expression changed completely.

"Marcus...""

I approached.

"What?""

He pointed to the final page.

There was a name beneath Ava's birth record.

*BIOLOGICAL MOTHER: VANESSA COLE.*

I looked at the woman who had once stood beside me in a champagne dress, waiting for a proposal.

The woman who had gripped Ava's shoulders.

The woman who had screamed when I opened the pool hatch.

Vanessa had been Ava's biological mother.

Not Elena.

Not the woman who had spent six years raising her.

Vanessa.

I felt my stomach turn.

Elena looked at the document.

Then she whispered:

"She gave birth to my daughter?""

Mrs. Bennett nodded.

"Yes.""

I turned toward Ava.

She was still holding my neck.

I kissed the top of her head.

"You're safe, sweetheart.""

Then I looked at Daniel.

"Where is Vanessa now?""

He checked his phone.

"She's in police custody in Boston.""

"Bring her here.""

Three hours later, Vanessa sat across from me in an interview room.

Her champagne-colored dress was gone.

She wore a gray detention uniform.

Her hair was tied back, and her makeup had been washed away.

Without the expensive jewelry and carefully practiced smile, she looked like a completely different person.

She looked at me.

"Marcus.""

I placed the photograph on the table.

She stared at it.

Then she looked away.

"Who told you?""

"Mrs. Bennett.""

Vanessa closed her eyes.

I leaned forward.

"Did you give birth to Ava?""

She didn't answer.

"Did you?""

Finally, she nodded.

"Yes.""

I felt my jaw tighten.

"Why did you let Elena raise her?""

Vanessa looked at me.

"Because I couldn't.""

"That's not an answer.""

She swallowed.

"Richard told me that if I kept the baby, he would destroy my life. He said she would be taken away and placed with strangers.""

"So you handed her to Elena?""

"I didn't hand her to Elena. Richard arranged the transfer.""

"Did you know what they were doing?""

She looked down.

"Yes.""

I stared at her.

"Did you know Elena was being told her baby had died?""

Vanessa began crying.

"Yes.""

"Did you know she spent years grieving a child who was alive?""

She nodded.

I slammed my hand against the table.

"Then why?""

Vanessa flinched.

"Because I was afraid!""

Her voice cracked.

"Richard controlled everything. He had my medical records. He had photographs.

He knew about my family. He said if I went against him, he'd make sure I never saw Ava again.""

I stared.

"Yet you came into my house.""

She looked up.

"Yes.""

"You wore my wife's perfume.""

Her eyes filled.

"Yes.""

"You slept in her bedroom.""

"Marcus—"

"You stood beside me while I was preparing to propose to you.""

Vanessa covered her face.

I leaned back.

"Did you ever love me?""

She didn't answer immediately.

Then she whispered:

"I did.""

I laughed without humor.

"You loved the house.""

"No.""

"The money?""

"No.""

"Or did you just want to keep Ava close enough to control what happened to her?""

Vanessa looked at me.

"I wanted to be her mother.""

I stood.

"You had six years.""

"I know.""

"You could have told Elena.""

"I know.""

"You could have told me.""

She began sobbing.

"I know!""

I looked at her for a long moment.

Then I asked the question that mattered most.

"Does Ava know you're her biological mother?""

Vanessa shook her head.

"No.""

"Good.""

I turned toward the door.

"She already has a mother. Her name is Elena.""

Vanessa suddenly stood.

"Marcus, please.""

I stopped.

She looked desperate.

"There's one more thing you need to know.""

I turned.

"What?""

"Richard didn't arrange the transfer because he wanted the inheritance.""

I stared.

"Then why?""

Vanessa wiped her cheeks.

"Because Ava wasn't the only baby involved.""

My stomach tightened.

"Go on.""

She swallowed.

"The child I gave birth to wasn't the baby Richard originally wanted.""

I stared at her.

"What are you talking about?""

Vanessa looked directly at me.

"The baby I delivered was a boy.""

The room seemed to disappear.

"A boy?""

She nodded.

"They switched him with a girl.""

I felt my blood run cold.

"Where is my son?""

Vanessa closed her eyes.

"Richard took him.""

I gripped the chair.

"No.""

"Marcus, listen—"

"Where is he?""

She began crying harder.

"He was supposed to be raised by Richard's business partner. But after the accident at the institute, the records were changed again.""

I stared at her.

"Is he alive?""

Vanessa nodded.

"Yes.""

I couldn't breathe.

"Where?""

She looked at the photograph.

Then she whispered:

"He's the child who has been living under the name Samuel.""

I froze.

The young orderly.

The boy who had called himself my brother.

The one who had helped move the children.

I suddenly understood why he knew so much.

He wasn't my brother.

He was my son.

Samuel sat in the hospital conference room when I entered.

He looked up.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then I placed the photograph of Vanessa on the table.

He stared at it.

His face went pale.

"Where did you get that?""

I sat opposite him.

"From your mother.""

He shook his head.

"She's not my mother.""

"Biologically, she is.""

He laughed nervously.

"No.""

I placed the original birth record beside the photograph.

He read it.

Then he slowly lowered his head.

"That's impossible.""

I looked at him.

"What's your real name?""

He swallowed.

"Samuel.""

"Your birth name.""

His eyes filled.

"Daniel Michael Hayes.""

I closed my eyes.

My father had hidden another child.

My child.

I reached across the table.

"I'm your father.""

Samuel began crying.

He looked away.

"Why didn't you come?""

I couldn't answer.

Because there was no answer that could repair eighteen years.

He wiped his face.

"Did you know about me?""

"No.""

"Did Mom?""

I shook my head.

"No.""

He stared at the document.

"Richard told me my parents had died.""

I leaned forward.

"Richard lied.""

Samuel laughed bitterly.

"He told me I was lucky to have a family at all.""

I swallowed.

"Do you want to meet your mother?""

He nodded.

Then he looked at me.

"Does she know?""

"She does now.""

I stood.

"Come with me.""

Elena was sitting beside Ava when I entered.

Noah was asleep against her shoulder.

Grace and Lily were sitting near the window.

Daniel stood behind them.

I opened the door wider.

Samuel stepped inside.

Elena looked up.

For a moment, she seemed confused.

Then her eyes moved to the document in his hand.

"Who is he?""

I swallowed.

"Our son.""

Elena stared.

Samuel's face crumpled.

"Mom?""

Elena covered her mouth.

The sound that came out of her was somewhere between a sob and a gasp.

"Michael?""

He nodded.

She reached for him.

He crossed the room.

And then they were holding each other.

I watched my wife embrace the son she had been told never existed.

Ava looked up.

"Who is he, Daddy?""

I crouched beside her.

"Your big brother.""

She smiled.

"Another one?""

I laughed through my tears.

"Yes, sweetheart. Another one.""

She looked at Samuel.

"Do you like pancakes?""

He laughed.

"Very much.""

"Then you're definitely my brother.""

For the first time in years, the room filled with something other than fear.

It was laughter.

Real laughter.

Six months later, the original medical registry was released to investigators.

The discovery exposed an illegal child-transfer network that had operated for more than twenty years.

Richard was convicted of kidnapping, fraud, conspiracy, and multiple counts of falsifying medical records.

Vanessa pleaded guilty to her involvement and received a separate sentence after cooperating with investigators.

Dr. Whitmore lost his medical license.

Margaret was charged for her role in concealing the identities of several children, although her cooperation helped reunite families.

Ethan surrendered the remaining trust documents.

Daniel became the independent administrator of the family estate.

And Samuel finally received his real birth certificate.

But the most important changes happened far away from courtrooms.

Grace and Lily moved into an apartment near the university.

Noah started school again.

Ava began sleeping through the night.

Elena slowly recovered.

And every Sunday, our family gathered around the kitchen table.

Sometimes there were too many people to fit comfortably.

Sometimes arguments broke out over pancakes.

Sometimes someone cried.

But nobody disappeared without explanation.

Nobody was told their family had died when they were still alive.

And nobody had to wonder whether the people they loved were coming home.

One evening, I stood beside the infinity pool.

The water was still.

The hidden hatch had been removed, and the opening beneath it had been permanently sealed.

I watched Ava run across the patio.

"Daddy!""

I turned.

She was holding a small pink ribbon.

"Look what I found!""

I crouched.

"What's that?""

"Mommy's ribbon.""

I smiled.

"Where did you get it?""

"Grandma Elena gave it to me.""

She held it carefully.

Then she asked a question that made my throat tighten.

"Daddy, when Mommy was under the pool, did she think we forgot her?""

I looked toward Elena.

She was standing in the doorway, watching us.

I shook my head.

"No, sweetheart.""

"How do you know?""

I kissed her forehead.

"Because she kept fighting to come home.""

Ava thought about that.

Then she wrapped her arms around me.

"I'll never let you go missing.""

I held her close.

"That's a promise I hope you never have to keep.""

Behind us, Elena walked onto the terrace.

She slipped her hand into mine.

For a moment, we stood together beneath the same golden lights that had once illuminated my failed proposal.

I remembered the champagne glasses.

The ring box.

The screaming guests.

The moment my daughter pointed toward the water and told me her mother was alive.

I had thought I was about to lose everything that evening.

Instead, I had discovered how much of my life had been built on lies.

And I had learned something my father never understood.

A family isn't protected by secrets.

It isn't held together by money, bloodlines, inheritance, or expensive houses.

It's held together by the people who refuse to stop looking for one another.

Elena rested her head against my shoulder.

"Do you regret jumping into that pool?""

I looked at her.

Then at our children gathering around the dining table.

I smiled.

"Not for one second.""

Because the night Ava screamed those words, I had jumped into the water believing I was searching for my dead wife.

May you like

I came out carrying the truth.

And the truth had brought my entire family home.
