Amused

Chapter 4: The Photograph That Changed Everything

I stared at the photograph of Ava.

My six-year-old daughter was asleep on a hospital sofa, her blonde curls scattered across a pillow. Mrs. Bennett sat in a chair beside her, looking down at her phone.

The photograph had been taken from outside the room.

Someone had been close enough to see Ava breathing.

Close enough to reach her.

My hands began trembling.

Daniel took the phone from me.

"Marcus, don't respond.""

I grabbed it back.

"Someone is watching my daughter.""

"I know.""

"No, you don't understand. They know where she is. They know who is guarding her. They could walk in there right now.""

Daniel stepped closer.

"Then we secure the hospital before making another move.""

I dialed the police officer who had taken my statement at the mansion.

He answered after two rings.

"Officer Miller.""

"This is Marcus Hayes. My daughter has been threatened. I have photographs proving someone is watching her inside the hospital.""

His voice immediately changed.

"Where are you?""

"St. Catherine's Hospital. Pediatric waiting area, fourth floor.""

"Stay where you are. I'll send officers.""

I hung up.

Daniel was already calling his security company.

"Get two guards to the hospital. Nobody enters that waiting area without my authorization.""

I looked at him.

"And get someone to watch Elena.""

He nodded.

"Already doing it.""

For a moment, I stood motionless.

My wife was alive.

My son was alive.

And the people who had taken them were still somewhere outside, making decisions about whether my children would get to see another morning.

I couldn't wait.

I walked toward the waiting room.

Ava was still asleep.

Mrs. Bennett looked up when I entered.

"Mr. Hayes?""

I pointed toward the photograph on my phone.

"Did you notice anyone taking pictures?""

Her expression changed.

"Pictures?""

I showed her.

She examined it carefully.

Then she looked toward the hallway.

"Oh, dear God.""

"What?""

"That photograph was taken from the service corridor.""

I frowned.

"How do you know?""

She pointed toward the reflection in the glass behind Ava.

A small section of a silver elevator door was visible.

"That's the old service elevator. It hasn't been used by visitors in years.""

I stared at the reflection.

"Where does it lead?""

Mrs. Bennett hesitated.

"Down to the basement.""

I felt a chill.

"Does it connect to the parking garage?""

"No. It connects to the old maintenance wing.""

Daniel appeared behind me.

"That's interesting.""

I turned.

"Why?""

He lowered his voice.

"Because the hospital's maintenance wing shares an access tunnel with the private medical center next door.""

I looked at him.

"Which medical center?""

"Hayes Family Medical Institute.""

My father's private medical facility.

It had been built with family money and was still partially owned by the company.

I stared at the photograph again.

The person who took it might have come through a building connected to our family.

"Get the police down there.""

Daniel nodded.

Before he could move, Ava stirred.

"Daddy?""

I immediately knelt beside her.

"Hey, princess.""

She rubbed her eyes.

"Where's Mommy?""

"She's resting. The doctors are helping her.""

"Is she coming home?""

I smiled.

"Yes.""

Ava looked down at her hands.

"Can I tell you something?""

"Anything.""

She leaned closer.

"When I saw Mommy under the pool, I wasn't seeing her for the first time.""

My smile disappeared.

"What do you mean?""

Ava looked toward Mrs. Bennett.

The housekeeper lowered her eyes.

"Sweetheart, what are you talking about?""

"Mommy used to talk to me.""

I felt my chest tighten.

"When?""

"At night.""

"At night where?""

Ava pointed toward the hospital window.

"Through the little black phone.""

Daniel and I exchanged a glance.

"What little black phone?""

Ava held her hands apart, showing us its size.

"It was in the pantry. Vanessa said it was broken, but sometimes it made noises.""

My stomach turned.

"Did you hear Mommy?""

Ava nodded.

"She told me to be brave.""

I swallowed.

"What else did she say?""

Ava's eyes filled.

"She told me not to tell Vanessa that I knew she was alive.""

I felt as if someone had punched me.

For months, Vanessa had been living in my house.

Eating at my table.

Sleeping beside me.

Kissing me goodnight.

And my daughter had been secretly hearing her mother's voice while I sat downstairs believing Elena was dead.

"Why didn't you tell me, sweetheart?""

Ava began crying.

"Vanessa said if I told you, Mommy would disappear forever.""

I pulled her into my arms.

"Oh, baby.""

"I didn't want Mommy to disappear.""

I held her tightly.

"None of this is your fault. Do you understand?""

She nodded against my shoulder.

Daniel stepped into the hallway to speak with the officers.

Mrs. Bennett sat beside Ava.

Then she quietly said something that made me turn.

"Mr. Hayes, there's something else.""

"What?""

She looked uncomfortable.

"Mrs. Elena gave me something before she disappeared.""

I stared at her.

"What did she give you?""

"A key.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"She made me promise not to give it to anyone unless I knew she was truly in danger.""

I looked at Elena's room.

"Where is it?""

Mrs. Bennett reached beneath her cardigan and removed a tiny silver key attached to a faded blue ribbon.

My heart began pounding.

"Where does it go?""

"I don't know.""

She placed it in my palm.

There was a number engraved on its head.

*17.*

Daniel returned.

"The police found someone in the maintenance wing.""

I looked up.

"Who?""

"A hospital employee. He was carrying a second phone and a photograph of Ava.""

"Did he tell them who sent him?""

Daniel shook his head.

"Not yet.""

I looked down at the key.

Then at the photograph of my son.

Something connected in my mind.

The little black phone.

The service corridor.

The medical institute.

The underground room beneath my father's study.

"Daniel, I need to go to the mansion.""

He immediately shook his head.

"Absolutely not.""

"There's something there.""

"Marcus, Richard specifically told you to come home alone. That's exactly what he wants.""

"Then I'll bring the police.""

"Good. But we wait until they secure the property.""

I looked at Ava.

She was holding Mrs. Bennett's hand.

I couldn't leave her.

Not after everything.

"Can you stay with her?""

Mrs. Bennett nodded.

"With my life.""

I kissed Ava's forehead.

"Daddy has to find something.""

She caught my sleeve.

"Bring Noah home.""

I froze.

"How do you know his name?""

She looked at me as if the answer were obvious.

"Mommy told me.""

My breath caught.

"When?""

"Last night.""

I stared at my daughter.

Last night.

Elena had been rescued only hours ago.

I leaned closer.

"Sweetheart, where did Mommy tell you about Noah?""

Ava pointed toward the hallway.

"She called me.""

"From where?""

"The black phone.""

My blood ran cold.

Because the call had supposedly come from beneath our mansion.

And if Elena had spoken to Ava last night, then she had known exactly where she was being held.

I turned to Daniel.

"We need to find that phone.""

At 4:20 a.m., Officer Miller called.

"Mr. Hayes, we have a problem.""

"What happened?""

"The man we detained in the maintenance wing has disappeared.""

I stood.

"What?""

"He was taken for questioning. Someone presented authorization to transfer him to another facility.""

"Who authorized it?""

There was a pause.

"Your brother.""

I closed my eyes.

"Richard.""

"Yes. He apparently identified himself as a legal representative of the Hayes medical estate.""

"He's not authorized to do that.""

"We know. We're checking the paperwork.""

I looked at Daniel.

He had already begun shaking his head.

"Marcus, don't.""

I ended the call.

"Richard has the hospital employee.""

Daniel grabbed his briefcase.

"Then we get a warrant, secure the mansion, and locate him.""

I looked at the key marked 17.

"No.""

"Marcus—"

"That key belongs to something my father left behind. I need to know what it opens.""

Daniel stared at me.

Then his phone rang.

He answered.

"Reeves.""

His expression changed.

"What?""

He listened.

Then slowly lowered the phone.

I looked at him.

"What?""

He swallowed.

"The police just recovered footage from the hospital's service elevator.""

"Show me.""

Daniel turned his screen toward me.

The video showed a man entering the elevator.

He wore a dark maintenance uniform.

He was holding a phone.

Then the camera captured his face.

I recognized him immediately.

He had been standing beside Richard at my father's funeral.

My father's former personal physician.

Dr. Samuel Whitmore.

Daniel whispered, "I thought he retired.""

I stared at the screen.

Then I noticed something in the man's other hand.

A small white hospital bracelet.

The name printed on it was barely visible.

But I could read the first three letters.

*NOA...*

My son had been inside the hospital.

And someone had taken him out.
