Amused

Chapter 4: The House He Planned to Steal

I read Robert's message three times before I believed it.

*A document showing that Daniel planned to transfer your house into someone else's name.*

Vanessa's name.

My husband's sister.

The woman who had ordered lobster, expensive wine, and enough food to feed a small wedding party at Robert's birthday dinner, apparently confident that someone else would pay.

I sat at Rachel's kitchen table, staring at the screen.

“There's no way he can do that,” Rachel said.

I looked up.

“He can't transfer a house he doesn't own.””

“Then why would Robert have a document?””

“That is what I'm going to find out.””

Rachel folded her arms.

“I'm coming with you tomorrow.””

“You don't have to.””

“I know. I'm choosing to.””

For the first time in two days, I felt grateful for something that had nothing to do with money.

My husband had spent years making me believe that family loyalty meant keeping quiet.

Rachel reminded me that loyalty could also mean standing beside someone when they finally decided to speak.

That evening, I received another message from Daniel.

*I've been patient enough. Come home tomorrow morning. We need to settle this.*

I didn't respond.

A second message arrived.

*If you keep making accusations, I'll have no choice but to protect my interests.*

I placed my phone facedown.

Rachel read the message over my shoulder.

“Does he always talk like he's negotiating a hostage release?””

“Only when he doesn't get his way.””

She shook her head.

“Don't go anywhere alone with him.””

I nodded.

The following morning, Rachel drove me to Robert's house.

It was a large brick property in Franklin, Tennessee, with white columns and a carefully maintained garden. Daniel had grown up there, and I had spent countless holidays in its dining room.

Patricia opened the door.

Her expression changed when she saw me.

“Oh. You're here.””

“Good morning, Patricia.””

She looked at Rachel.

“And you've brought an audience?””

Rachel smiled politely.

“I'm her ride.””

Patricia stepped aside reluctantly.

“Robert is in the study.””

The house smelled of coffee and lemon polish.

I followed the hallway toward the study, remembering how many weekends I had spent helping Patricia prepare for family gatherings.

I had once considered this place my second home.

Now I wasn't sure I wanted to walk through its front door again.

Robert stood when I entered.

“Claire.””

He looked tired.

His usual cheerful expression had disappeared, and there were dark circles beneath his eyes.

“Thank you for coming.””

I hugged him briefly.

“What's going on?””

He looked toward Rachel.

“Is it all right if she stays?””

“Absolutely.””

Robert nodded.

He closed the study door and walked to his desk.

A thick brown envelope lay beside a stack of papers.

“I found this in Daniel's office last week,” he said.

“Why were you in his office?””

“He asked me to retrieve a file from his briefcase. I found this underneath it.””

He opened the envelope.

Inside was a draft property transfer agreement.

I recognized our address immediately.

My house.

The document listed me as the current owner and Vanessa as the proposed recipient.

But there was something more disturbing.

A section titled Consideration stated that the property would be transferred in exchange for one dollar.

One dollar.

My home, the place I had spent five years paying for, was apparently worth less than a cup of coffee in my husband's proposed arrangement.

I looked at Robert.

“Is this real?””

“It's a draft. It hasn't been recorded.””

“Who prepared it?””

Robert handed me another page.

A law firm's name appeared at the top.

“I called them,” he said.

“They confirmed Daniel had asked about transferring the property.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“Did they know I hadn't agreed?””

“They said they had requested additional ownership documentation before proceeding.””

Rachel leaned forward.

“Was Daniel trying to transfer the house without Claire's consent?””

Robert rubbed his forehead.

“That is what I believe.””

I turned another page.

There was a handwritten note in the margin.

*Need Claire's signature. Tell her it's estate planning.*

I stared at the words.

My husband had planned to disguise a property transfer as estate planning.

Robert watched my face.

“I'm sorry, Claire.””

I looked at him.

“You knew he was using money from our joint account?””

He lowered his eyes.

“I suspected it. I didn't understand the extent of it.””

“But you knew about the seventy-five thousand dollars.””

“Yes.””

“And you didn't tell me?””

He swallowed.

“I should have.””

The honesty in his answer surprised me.

For once, someone in the Harrison family wasn't trying to explain away what had happened.

Robert sat down.

“When Daniel first approached me, he said your business was struggling. He told me you were worried about losing the house.””

“My business is doing better than it has in years.””

“I know that now.””

“He told you I wanted to sell?””

Robert nodded.

I laughed bitterly.

“That's incredible.””

“He said he was trying to protect you.””

Rachel shook her head.

“By transferring her house to his sister?””

Robert looked ashamed.

“I believed him at first.””

I sat opposite him.

“Why did you start investigating?””

He opened another drawer and removed a small notebook.

“Because Daniel asked me for another hundred thousand dollars.””

I stared.

“What?””

“He said the business needed emergency financing. I asked for the financial statements. He became angry and told me I was questioning his integrity.””

Robert paused.

“That's when I contacted Michael.””

He placed the notebook on the desk.

Inside were dates, amounts, and account references.

“Your husband has been moving money between several accounts,” he explained.

“Some transactions involve Vanessa. Others involve a company I had never heard of.””

“What company?””

Robert pointed to a line.

*Northbridge Property Holdings.*

I read the name.

“What's that?””

“Michael believes Daniel may have established it to hold assets outside his personal name.””

Rachel leaned closer.

“Does Vanessa know?””

Robert looked at me.

“I believe she does.””

I felt a familiar anger rising.

“What about Patricia?””

Robert didn't answer immediately.

Then he said, “Your mother-in-law knows more than she admits.””

Before I could ask another question, the study door opened.

Patricia stood there.

“What are you all doing in here?””

Robert sighed.

“Patricia, not now.””

She stepped inside.

“I have every right to know what's happening in my own house.””

“This concerns Claire,” Robert said.

Patricia looked at me.

“Daniel called me last night. He said you're planning to destroy his business.””

I stared at her.

“Did he also tell you he planned to transfer my house to Vanessa?””

Her expression flickered.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

“You don't understand the arrangement,” she said.

Rachel straightened.

“What arrangement?””

Patricia ignored her.

“Daniel has always helped his sister. Vanessa has two children. She needs stability.””

I looked at her.

“And I don't?””

“You have a successful business. You can afford to help.””

“That doesn't give Daniel the right to take my house.””

Patricia folded her arms.

“Nobody is taking anything. It's simply a family arrangement.””

I slowly stood.

“Then why does the document say I need to sign it?””

Patricia's mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

Robert looked at his wife.

“Patricia, did you know about this?””

She turned toward him.

“Don't make me the villain here.””

“Did you know?””

She looked away.

“I knew Daniel was trying to arrange something for Vanessa.””

I felt my heart sink.

“How long?””

She didn't answer.

“Patricia, how long?””

“Several months.””

Rachel whispered something under her breath.

I stared at my mother-in-law.

“Several months?””

She lifted her chin.

“Daniel said it was temporary. He promised the house would eventually be transferred back.””

“Why would my house need to be transferred to Vanessa in the first place?””

“Because she needed collateral.””

I laughed.

It was the only sound I could make.

My home was going to become collateral for my sister-in-law's financial problems.

And everyone had apparently discussed it except me.

Robert stood.

“That's enough, Patricia.””

She turned sharply.

“Robert, you're making a terrible mistake by taking Claire's side.””

He looked at her.

“I'm taking the side of the truth.””

For several seconds, the room was silent.

Then Patricia picked up her handbag.

“Fine. But don't expect Daniel to forgive any of you.””

She walked out.

A moment later, the front door slammed.

I looked at Robert.

“Does Vanessa know the house is mine?””

He nodded.

“She knows.””

“Then she's been planning to take it?””

“I can't prove what she knew about the forged paperwork. But she knew Daniel intended to use the property.””

I sat down again.

My hands were trembling.

Robert pushed the envelope toward me.

“Michael has copies. You should keep these too.””

I gathered the documents carefully.

Then Robert said something that made me stop.

“There's another reason I asked you to come.””

“What?””

He opened a small safe beneath his desk and removed a sealed envelope.

It had my name written across the front.

Not Claire Harrison.

Claire Morgan.

My maiden name.

I looked at him.

“What's this?””

“Something my wife and I should have given you years ago.””

I opened it.

Inside was a copy of a trust document.

The name of the beneficiary was mine.

The amount was listed as $250,000.

I stared at the page.

“What is this?””

Robert sat down heavily.

“Five years ago, when you and Daniel bought your house, I established a private trust for your benefit.””

I looked up.

“For me?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

He smiled sadly.

“Because you paid the entire down payment, and Daniel told me he wanted to make sure you would always have security.””

I swallowed.

“What happened to it?””

Robert pointed to the bottom of the page.

The trust had been amended eighteen months earlier.

A new beneficiary had been added.

Vanessa Harrison.

And the amendment carried a signature that looked disturbingly similar to mine.

I stared at Robert.

“Did I sign this?””

He shook his head.

“No, Claire.””

My blood ran cold.

“Then who did?””

Robert looked toward the closed study door.

“That's what Michael is trying to establish.””

He paused.

May you like

Then he said:

“But there's something else you need to know. Daniel didn't just want your house. He wanted that trust emptied before you discovered it existed.””
