Amused

Chapter 8: The Night Everything Changed

I drove back to my mother’s house without remembering the journey.

My hands were steady.

My mind wasn’t.

The woman who raised me had been lying to me for fifteen years.

When I arrived, the front door was open.

That frightened me more than anything.

“Mom?””

No answer.

I walked inside.

The house was dark.

Then I saw her.

Sitting at the kitchen island.

The same place where I found the pregnancy test.

She looked exhausted.

Like she had been carrying a weight too heavy for one person.

“I knew you would come back.””

I closed the door.

“Tell me everything.””

She nodded.

“I will.””

“No more protecting me.””

“I know.””

“No more protecting anyone else.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I know.””

I sat across from her.

“Start with Dad.””

My mother looked down.

“Your father wasn’t perfect.””

I said nothing.

“He made mistakes.””

“What kind?””

She swallowed.

“Business mistakes.””

“That’s not enough.””

She nodded.

“Your father was desperate.””

“For money?””

“Yes.””

I stared.

“Why?””

She looked at me.

“Because he discovered someone was stealing from him.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Richard?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“Then who?””

She whispered:

“Marcus’s father.””

I froze.

My mother continued.

“Your father trusted Richard. They were partners. Friends.””

“What happened?””

“Richard started moving money through different companies.””

“And Dad found out?””

“Yes.””

I leaned back.

“Then why did Richard say Dad stole money?””

“Because that’s what he wanted everyone to believe.””

My mother looked toward the window.

“The night your father died, he called me.””

My breath caught.

“You were with him.””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because he needed help.””

“With what?””

She looked at me.

“He had proof.””

“What proof?””

“That Richard had been laundering money.””

The word sat between us.

I felt sick.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

My mother started crying.

“Because after your father died, I received a message.””

“From who?””

“Richard.””

My jaw tightened.

“What did it say?””

She looked terrified.

“He said if I talked, I would lose you too.””

The room went silent.

I understood then.

Not forgiveness.

Not yet.

But understanding.

My mother wasn’t hiding because she didn’t care.

She was hiding because she was afraid.

Still wrong.

Still painful.

But different.

“What happened that night?””

She closed her eyes.

“Your father met me at the warehouse.””

The same warehouse.

“He gave me a folder.””

“Where is it?””

“I hid it.””

My heart raced.

“Where?””

She looked at me.

“In your father’s old office.””

“That place was emptied.””

She shook her head.

“Not everything.””

She stood.

“I never went back.””

We drove there together.

Neither of us spoke.

For the first time in days, I sat beside my mother without feeling like I knew nothing.

When we entered the warehouse, David was still there.

He looked surprised.

“You came back.””

My mother nodded.

“I need to show her.””

David’s face changed.

“You’re finally ready?””

She nodded.

We entered the old office.

My mother walked straight to the wall.

She removed a faded photograph.

Behind it was a small compartment.

Inside was a folder.

My hands shook as she handed it to me.

“This is what your father died protecting.””

I opened it.

Documents.

Bank transfers.

Names.

Richard Reed.

Marcus Reed.

And another name.

A name I knew.

I stared.

“No.””

My mother whispered:

“Nia…”

I looked at her.

“Why is Marcus’s name here?””

Nobody answered.

Then the office door opened.

Marcus stood there.

His face was pale.

“I can explain.””

I turned.

“You knew.””

His eyes filled with regret.

“Yes.””

The pain returned instantly.

“You knew my father investigated your family.””

“Yes.””

“You knew the truth.””

“Yes.””

I stepped closer.

“Then why did you come into my life?””

Marcus looked broken.

“Because I was trying to stop him.””

“Your father?””

He nodded.

“I found out what he did.””

“Then why hurt me?””

His voice cracked.

“Because I loved you.””

I shook my head.

“Love doesn’t look like this.””

He looked down.

“I know.””

Then he reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a small envelope.

“I found this after my father disappeared.””

He handed it to me.

“What is it?””

“A letter from him.””

I opened it.

The first sentence made my blood freeze.

*Marcus, if Nia ever discovers the truth, she must never know who her real father is.*

I looked up.

My entire body went cold.

Real father.

The words didn’t make sense.

Because my father was James Carter.

Wasn’t he?
