Amused

Chapter 10: The Truth We Were All Running From

I didn’t scream.

I didn’t cry.

I just stared at Marcus.

Because sometimes the most painful moments are the quiet ones.

“Elena said it was you.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“Nia…”

“Was it?””

He didn’t answer.

That was enough.

My mother gasped.

“No.””

David stepped forward.

“Marcus?””

Marcus looked broken.

“I didn’t kill him.””

The words came quickly.

Too quickly.

“I didn’t.””

I watched his face.

The fear.

The guilt.

The pain.

Something was there.

But I didn’t know what.

“Then tell me what happened.””

Marcus sat down.

And for the first time, he looked like a man who had been carrying something too heavy for too long.

“I was twenty-two.””

Nobody moved.

“My father had already started destroying Carter Logistics.””

He looked at me.

“Your father found out.””

I listened.

“James Carter was going to expose him.””

My mother closed her eyes.

“That night, my father told me to follow him.””

“Why?””

“Because he wanted me to scare him.””

My stomach tightened.

“What did you do?””

Marcus looked at his hands.

“I followed him to the warehouse.””

The same warehouse.

“I heard them arguing.””

“Your father and Richard?””

“Yes.””

His voice cracked.

“They were fighting over everything.””

The money.

The company.

The betrayal.

“I wanted to stop it.””

I stared.

“So you went inside?””

“Yes.””

He swallowed.

“Your father saw me.””

“And?””

“He recognized me.””

My chest tightened.

“Because he knew who you were.””

Marcus nodded.

“He told me I didn’t have to become my father.””

Silence.

“He told me I still had a choice.””

Marcus wiped his face.

“I left.””

I frowned.

“Then what happened?””

“Richard followed me.””

The room froze.

“He told me if I talked, my family would destroy me.””

Marcus looked at my mother.

“I was scared.””

My voice was quiet.

“And my father?””

Marcus looked at me.

“I went back.””

“Why?””

“To warn him.””

“About Richard?””

“Yes.””

He shook his head.

“But I was too late.””

I held my breath.

“What did you see?””

His eyes filled.

“Your father was already gone.””

Nobody spoke.

“The car accident…”

He nodded.

“Richard caused it.””

My mother covered her mouth.

David looked devastated.

“So why did you hide?””

Marcus looked at me.

“Because Richard told me if I exposed him, he would destroy everyone.””

“Everyone?””

“You.””

The word hit me.

“He knew about you.””

Marcus nodded.

“He knew James wasn’t your biological father.””

I looked at my mother.

“He knew everything.””

“Yes.””

“And you came into my life because of guilt.””

Marcus looked away.

“At first.””

That hurt.

“But then?””

He looked at me.

“Then I loved you.””

I wanted to hate him.

I tried.

But the worst part was knowing some of it was true.

The door opened.

Everyone turned.

Elena stood there.

She looked exhausted.

“I’m sorry.””

Marcus stood.

“Elena.””

She ignored him.

“Nia, I need to tell you the last part.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She walked closer.

“The pregnancy test.””

My heart tightened.

“What about it?””

She looked at Marcus.

“It’s not his.””

Silence.

Marcus froze.

“What?””

Elena nodded.

“The baby isn’t yours.””

I looked at my mother.

Then Marcus.

Then Elena.

“Then whose is it?””

Elena’s eyes filled with tears.

“Richard’s.””

Nobody moved.

The man who destroyed my family.

The man who destroyed my father.

Was the father of Marcus’s former fiancée’s child.

But the next words were worse.

Elena whispered:

“Richard knew.””

I frowned.

“Knew what?””

“He knew I was pregnant.””

“Then why hide it?””

Her face collapsed.

“Because he was using the baby as leverage.””

“For what?””

She looked at Marcus.

“To make him obey.””

Marcus looked sick.

My mind raced.

Everything connected.

The affair.

The money.

The lies.

The secrets.

Richard had controlled everyone.

But there was one thing he didn’t understand.

People who have nothing left to lose become dangerous.

My phone buzzed.

A new message.

Unknown number.

A photo appeared.

It was Richard.

Standing outside my mother’s house.

The message said:

*You finally know the truth.*

Another message appeared.

*Now I need you to decide who you’re willing to sacrifice.*

I looked outside.

The street was empty.

But I knew he was watching.

I looked at my mother.

At David.

At Marcus.

At Elena.

For fifteen years, everyone had been protecting secrets.

But Richard made one mistake.

He thought secrets were what kept people powerless.

He was wrong.

Secrets were what destroyed us.

And now that they were all exposed…

We were finally free to fight back.

I picked up my phone.

I typed one message.

*Come inside, Richard.*

The reply came instantly.

*You’re making a mistake, Nia.*

I smiled for the first time in weeks.

Because he didn’t know me.

Not anymore.

I had spent my whole life being protected by lies.

Now I was going to destroy them with the truth.

I opened the front door.

And waited.

Because this time…

May you like

I wasn’t the person walking into the trap.

He was.
