Chapter 2: The Man Standing Beside My Husband

Marcus didn't move.
He stood in the middle of the patio holding Jordan's phone while the birthday guests slowly realized they were witnessing something much bigger than a family argument.
Raymond reached for a napkin.
His hand was shaking.
“Marcus, listen to me,” he began.
Marcus didn't look at him.
“I'm listening.””
“Whatever you saw on that phone, it's not the whole story.””
“Then tell me the whole story.””
Raymond glanced at me.
That was his first mistake.
Because Marcus noticed.
“You're looking at Danielle,” Marcus said.
“Why?””
Raymond rubbed his forehead.
“Because she's your wife. Because she's upset. Because this is a family matter.””
Marcus gave a humorless laugh.
“You're standing in my backyard while my son tells me his mother has been putting something in my drinks. Then a recording catches you discussing it with her. And you want to call this a family matter?””
Raymond raised both hands.
“I'm not involved in anything dangerous.””
Jordan stepped forward.
“You're lying.””
Raymond's head snapped toward him.
“Watch your mouth, young man.””
“No.””
Jordan's voice was steadier now.
“I'm done being scared of you.””
I wanted to grab him.
I wanted to shake him until he understood how much damage he was doing.
But I couldn't move.
Not with Marcus watching.
Not with thirty people listening.
And certainly not with that phone recording everything.
Marcus turned to Jordan.
“What did you find?””
Jordan took a breath.
“Three weeks ago, I came downstairs around midnight because I couldn't sleep. I heard Mom talking in the study.””
He glanced at me.
“I thought she was talking to Aunt Denise because I heard her mention the word transfer. But then I heard Uncle Raymond's voice.””
Raymond shook his head.
“Jordan, you don't understand adult conversations.””
“I understand what I heard.””
“Son,” Marcus said gently, “tell me.””
Jordan continued.
“They were talking about your company.””
Marcus frowned.
“What about my company?””
“They said you were going to sign some documents after your birthday. Mom said you had already agreed to give her authority over certain accounts.””
Marcus slowly looked at me.
“Which documents?””
I forced myself to answer.
“Estate planning documents.””
“That's not what I asked.””
“Marcus, we've discussed this.””
“We discussed updating our wills. We did not discuss giving you authority over my business accounts.””
I looked toward Raymond.
He had become unusually interested in the grass.
Marcus followed my eyes.
“Raymond?””
My brother-in-law finally spoke.
“It's a misunderstanding. Danielle asked me to review some paperwork. That's all.””
“What paperwork?””
“Nothing unusual.””
“Then you won't mind telling me.””
Raymond sighed.
“It's complicated.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“Try me.””
For seventeen years, Raymond had been a fixture in our lives.
He was my older brother, though everyone called him Uncle Raymond because he was only a few years older than Marcus. He had attended our wedding, held Jordan at the hospital, and helped Marcus secure his first major commercial development contract.
He had even invested in one of Marcus's earliest projects.
When Raymond lost most of his money during a bad investment, Marcus brought him into the company.
He gave him a position.
A salary.
A second chance.
Now the two men were standing ten feet apart, and neither seemed to recognize the other.
“Marcus,” Raymond said, “you need to understand that Danielle came to me because she was worried about you.””
Marcus's eyebrows drew together.
“Worried about me?””
“She said you were exhausted. That you were forgetting things. That you were becoming unpredictable.””
I felt a flash of relief.
That was the story we had agreed upon.
But Raymond kept talking.
“She thought you needed help managing the business.””
Marcus looked at me.
“Is that true?””
I nodded quickly.
“Yes. You've been working too much. You've been under tremendous pressure.””
“Then why didn't you tell me?””
“Because you never listen when I tell you to slow down.””
Jordan shook his head.
“That's not why.””
I turned toward him.
“Jordan, please.””
He ignored me.
“Mom said Dad would be easier to control if everyone thought he was getting sick.””
Marcus's face changed.
“Control?””
Jordan nodded.
“She said people would believe anything if they heard it from the right person.””
Raymond stepped forward.
“That's enough. This conversation is going too far.””
Marcus raised a hand.
“Don't move.””
Raymond stopped.
Marcus looked at Jordan.
“What else?””
Jordan unlocked his phone again.
“I recorded another conversation.””
I felt my knees weaken.
He opened an audio file.
The date displayed on the screen was October 8.
The recording began with the faint sound of a chair scraping against the floor.
Then Raymond spoke.
“Are you sure he hasn't noticed?””
My voice answered.
“He trusts me.””
“That's not what I asked.””
“Marcus has been sleeping badly. He's been forgetting things. He won't notice a few changes.””
A pause followed.
Then Raymond asked the question that made my stomach turn.
“And what about Jordan?””
I looked at my son.
He was staring at the ground.
My recorded voice answered.
“Jordan is the problem.””
Raymond sighed.
“You can't keep threatening the boy.””
“I'm not threatening him. I'm making sure he understands that his future depends on staying out of this.””
“Danielle, he's sixteen.””
“And Marcus is worth more to us if he's alive and legally competent long enough to sign the papers.””
The recording went silent for several seconds.
Then Raymond said something I wished I could erase from existence.
“What happens after he signs?””
My voice answered without hesitation.
“Then we don't need to pretend anymore.””
Marcus's hand began to tremble.
He stopped the recording.
Nobody spoke.
A woman near the garden whispered, “Oh my God.””
Denise began crying.
I looked at Marcus.
“It's not what you think.””
He stared at me.
“What do you want me to think?””
I tried to step closer.
“Raymond and I were discussing possibilities. We were worried about your health.””
“Then why did you say you didn't need to pretend after I signed?””
“I was angry.””
“Angry about what?””
I couldn't answer.
Marcus turned toward Raymond.
“Did you know she was putting something in my drinks?””
Raymond shook his head immediately.
“No.””
Jordan spoke.
“Yes, you did.””
Raymond glared at him.
“You have no idea what you're talking about.””
“I heard you ask her whether she was using the same stuff as before.””
Marcus looked at his brother-in-law.
“Same stuff?””
Raymond's expression collapsed.
For a few seconds, he looked like a man searching for an exit that didn't exist.
Then he said, “I never wanted anyone hurt.””
Marcus stared.
“That's your answer?””
“I was trying to help.””
“Help who?””
Raymond's eyes moved toward me.
I knew what he was thinking.
He wanted me to take responsibility.
After everything we'd done together, he was prepared to leave me standing alone.
I felt something inside me snap.
“You told me this was safe,” I said.
Raymond's head whipped around.
“Danielle, don't.””
“You said it wouldn't hurt him.””
Marcus looked between us.
“What wouldn't hurt me?””
I realized too late that I had spoken aloud.
Raymond stepped closer.
“Stop talking.””
I stared at him.
“Don't you dare tell me to stop.””
Marcus raised his voice.
“Both of you. Right now.””
The guests had started moving away from the patio.
Some were collecting their children. Others were standing near the gate, phones in hand.
Denise approached me slowly.
“Danielle, what did you do?””
I looked at my sister.
“Stay out of this.””
She flinched.
“I've been standing beside you all afternoon.””
“Then keep standing there.””
She shook her head.
“No. I think I've been standing beside you for fourteen years without knowing who you really were.””
That hurt more than I expected.
I turned away.
Marcus had placed the phone on the table.
He was looking at Jordan.
“Did you tell anyone else?””
Jordan shook his head.
“Only my friend Ethan. I asked him what to do.””
“Why?””
“Because I didn't know whether I was supposed to call the police.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
For a moment, he looked older than forty-five.
Then he opened them.
“You should have called.””
Jordan's lower lip trembled.
“I was scared, Dad.””
Marcus pulled him into his arms.
And my son broke.
He buried his face in his father's chest and began sobbing.
“I thought you were going to die,” he whispered.
Marcus wrapped both arms around him.
“I'm here, son.””
“I thought she was going to make me watch.””
Marcus pressed his lips against Jordan's hair.
“I'm here.””
I stood a few feet away, watching the two people I loved most hold each other as if I were a stranger.
Then Marcus looked up.
“Someone call the police.””
Raymond immediately stepped forward.
“Marcus, don't do this.””
Marcus stood.
“Do what?””
“Bring the police into a private family situation.””
Marcus laughed once.
“My son thinks his mother has been poisoning me, and you're worried about the police?””
“Think about your reputation.””
“My reputation?””
“Your business. Your clients. The newspapers. Do you want everyone hearing that your wife—”
“Don't.””
Marcus's voice was dangerously low.
“Don't use my business to protect yourself.””
Raymond backed away.
I rushed toward Marcus.
“Please, baby. Let's go inside. We can talk privately.””
He looked at me.
“Why?””
“Because I love you.””
He stared at me for a long moment.
Then he asked a question I couldn't answer.
“If you love me, Danielle, why did you need me to sign those papers before you could stop?””
I started crying again.
He didn't move.
A few minutes later, two guests called emergency services.
Marcus refused to drink anything else.
He asked Jordan to stay beside him while they waited.
Raymond tried to leave through the side gate, but my brother-in-law stopped him.
“Where do you think you're going?””
Raymond looked furious.
“I have nothing to do with this.””
“Then stay and explain yourself.””
Raymond's face hardened.
“You don't understand what she's done.””
Marcus stepped toward him.
“Then explain it.””
Raymond glanced at me.
I knew that look.
He was about to tell them everything.
And I knew exactly which secret he would reveal first.
“Marcus,” Raymond said, “there's something about Jordan you need to know.””
My son lifted his head.
“What?””
Raymond swallowed.
Then he looked directly at my husband.
“Jordan isn't the only reason Danielle has been keeping secrets from you.””
Marcus's face tightened.
“What does that mean?””
May you like
Raymond's next words made my blood run cold.
“Ask your wife who Jordan's biological father really is.””
