Chapter 7: The Truth Buried Under Lies
The words followed us out of the office.
*“Ethan wasn’t given away. He was taken.””*
I had heard them.
Adrian had heard them.
Vanessa had said them clearly.
But none of us seemed able to accept what they meant.
A family secret was one thing.
A hidden child was one thing.
But taking a child?
That was something else entirely.
The drive home was almost silent.
Adrian kept both hands on the steering wheel, staring straight ahead.
Usually, he was the kind of person who filled quiet moments with small comments.
A joke.
A question.
A random thought about something he saw outside the window.
Not today.
Today, he looked like a stranger carrying a lifetime of questions.
I sat beside him, holding the journal Vanessa had given us.
I hadn’t opened it.
Not yet.
Part of me was afraid that every page would reveal something worse.
When we finally arrived home, Mia ran to the door.
“Daddy!””
Adrian forced a smile.
“There’s my birthday girl.””
She hugged him tightly.
For a few seconds, he just held her.
His eyes closed.
Like he needed that moment to remind himself what was real.
I watched him carefully.
Because after everything we learned, I realized something.
Adrian wasn’t only dealing with a secret about his past.
He was terrified that his family’s history could somehow hurt ours.
Mia looked up.
“Did you fix everything?””
Adrian smiled sadly.
“Not everything.””
She frowned.
“Why not?””
He crouched down.
“Because some things take time.””
She thought about that.
Then she nodded.
“Okay.””
Children were incredible that way.
They didn’t need every answer.
They just needed to know someone was trying.
After Mia went upstairs, Adrian placed the journal on the kitchen table.
“We need to read it.””
I sat across from him.
“Are you sure?””
“No.””
The honesty surprised me.
He opened the cover.
“But I need to know.””
The first pages were ordinary.
Notes about business.
Family expenses.
Daily thoughts.
Nothing unusual.
Then, halfway through the journal, the entries changed.
The handwriting became messier.
More emotional.
The first line made Adrian stop.
*“I made the biggest mistake of my life.””*
He continued reading.
His face grew more serious with every sentence.
Finally, he pushed the journal toward me.
“Read it.””
I looked down.
The entry was dated eleven years ago.
*“I thought I was protecting my family. I thought I could fix the damage quietly. I was wrong.””*
*“Ethan’s mother came to me because she was afraid. She said someone was looking for her. She begged me to keep him safe.””*
*“I promised I would.””*
I looked at Adrian.
“Your father knew Ethan’s mother?””
He nodded slowly.
“Apparently.””
I continued.
*“I contacted the adoption agency because I believed Ethan would be safer away from everyone involved. I thought distance would protect him.””*
*“But I underestimated how far people would go to hide the truth.””*
I stopped.
“People?””
Adrian leaned closer.
I turned the page.
*“Someone inside our family changed the paperwork.””*
The kitchen went silent.
Adrian’s expression hardened.
“Someone in the family.””
I nodded.
We kept reading.
*“Adrian was never supposed to be involved. He was only listed as a temporary guardian because I trusted him more than anyone.””*
*“But after the documents were changed, his name became attached to things he never approved.””*
Adrian sat back.
“So someone used my name.””
“Yes.””
His jaw tightened.
“Who?””
We turned the page.
The next entry was incomplete.
Only one sentence.
*“If Vanessa finds out what her mother did, she will never forgive—”*
The sentence ended there.
No more writing.
I looked at Adrian.
“Her mother?””
He stared at the page.
“Linda?””
Neither of us spoke.
Because suddenly the story changed again.
Vanessa had spent years blaming Adrian.
But maybe she had been looking in the wrong direction.
The next morning, Adrian called Vanessa.
She answered after one ring.
“I knew you’d call.””
His voice was cold.
“Why didn’t you tell me about Mom?””
There was silence.
A long one.
Then:
“Because I didn’t know everything.””
“You knew enough.””
“I knew Dad was hiding something.””
“And you blamed me.””
Her voice softened.
“I thought you were part of it.””
That hurt him.
I could hear it.
“You thought I helped take a child?””
“I thought you knew.””
“I was eighteen.””
“I know.””
“Then why?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
Finally, she whispered:
“Because nobody told me the truth either.””
That sentence changed the conversation.
Adrian sat down.
“What do you mean?””
“I found the photograph when I was twenty.””
“Where?””
“In Mom’s closet.””
He looked at me.
I knew he was thinking the same thing.
Linda.
Vanessa continued.
“I confronted her.””
“What did she say?””
“She told me I was confused.””
“And you believed her?””
“No.””
A pause.
“I believed that she was scared.””
Adrian frowned.
“Scared of what?””
Vanessa’s voice lowered.
“Ethan.””
The name felt heavier every time we heard it.
“What did she say about him?””
“She said he was dangerous.””
I felt a chill.
“Dangerous?””
Vanessa sighed.
“I didn’t understand then.””
“And now?””
“Now I think she was afraid he would tell the truth.””
Adrian stood.
“What truth?””
Vanessa didn’t answer immediately.
Then she said:
“I found Ethan.””
The room seemed to stop.
Adrian gripped the phone.
“What?””
“I found him.””
“When?””
My eyes widened.
She had known.
She had known Ethan was alive.
She had known where he was.
And she still went to Mia’s birthday party.
Still destroyed the dress.
Still caused chaos.
“Where is he?”” Adrian asked.
Vanessa hesitated.
“I was going to bring him to you.””
“Where is he?””
“Adrian…”
“Where?””
Her voice cracked.
“He doesn’t want to meet you.””
The words hurt.
Even I felt it.
Adrian looked away.
“Why?””
“Because he believes everyone abandoned him.””
My heart sank.
“What did you tell him?””
“The truth.””
“No,” Adrian said.
“You told him your version.””
Vanessa went quiet.
That silence told us enough.
Then she said:
“There’s something else.””
Adrian closed his eyes.
“What now?””
“He knows about Mia.””
My blood ran cold.
“What?””
Vanessa continued.
“He knows you have a daughter.””
“How?””
“I told him.””
The anger on Adrian’s face appeared instantly.
“Why would you do that?””
“Because I wanted him to understand what he lost.””
I stood.
“This is not about what he lost.””
Vanessa heard me.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
My voice shook.
“You brought your anger into my daughter’s birthday party.””
Silence.
Then Vanessa whispered:
“I’m sorry.””
The apology surprised me.
But it didn’t erase what happened.
Adrian spoke again.
“Where is Ethan?””
This time, Vanessa answered.
“He’s in town.””
A pause.
“He agreed to meet.””
“When?””
“Tomorrow.””
“Where?””
Vanessa hesitated.
Then:
“The old Carter house.””
Adrian froze.
The old family home.
The place where his father had kept decades of secrets.
The place that had been abandoned since his parents died.
Before ending the call, Vanessa added one final thing.
“Adrian…”
“What?””
“Ethan doesn’t just want answers.””
A chill moved through me.
“What does he want?””
Vanessa’s voice dropped.
“He wants the person who took him to admit what they did.””
The call ended.
Adrian stared at the phone.
Then he looked at me.
And I knew from his expression that tomorrow’s meeting wasn’t going to uncover the past.
It was going to force someone to face it.
Because Ethan Carter was finally coming home.
May you like
And he wasn’t coming back alone.
He was bringing the truth with him.
