Chapter 9: The Last Piece
Daniel drove through the night.
He needed answers.
Not another secret.
Not another person claiming they were protecting him.
Answers.
He arrived at Evelyn Carter’s house just before sunrise.
She opened the door before he knocked.
That alone told him everything.
“You knew.””
Evelyn looked tired.
“Daniel.””
“No.””
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
“You knew my father was alive.””
Evelyn looked away.
“Yes.””
“And you knew Lauren’s family was involved.””
“Yes.””
“How long?””
She did not answer.
Daniel stepped inside.
“How long?””
“Twenty-five years.””
The words hurt.
More than he expected.
“Everyone knew except me.””
Evelyn’s eyes filled with tears.
“We were trying to protect you.””
Daniel shook his head.
“Stop saying that.””
The room became silent.
“Everyone uses that excuse.””
Evelyn sat down.
“You’re right.””
She finally admitted it.
“We were wrong.””
Evelyn explained everything.
After Thomas disappeared, she helped Margaret survive.
She knew the truth.
She knew Thomas left because of threats.
She knew Lauren’s family had caused the destruction.
But she never expected Lauren to become part of Daniel’s life.
“When she started dating you, I recognized her name.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I saw you happy.””
Daniel laughed quietly.
“Happy?””
“Yes.””
“You watched me fall in love with someone who was using me.””
Evelyn lowered her eyes.
“I thought people could change.””
Daniel looked at her.
“And did she?””
Evelyn had no answer.
That afternoon, Daniel met Lauren one final time.
They sat across from each other in a quiet restaurant.
No cameras.
No guests.
No wedding decorations.
Just two people who barely recognized each other.
“I know everything,” Daniel said.
Lauren looked down.
“About my grandfather?””
“About you.””
She was silent.
Finally:
“I wanted answers.””
“You wanted revenge.””
Lauren looked up.
“You don’t know what my family lost.””
Daniel nodded.
“You’re right.””
She looked surprised.
“But you punished the wrong person.””
Lauren’s eyes filled.
“My family destroyed my life.””
“And you destroyed my mother’s.””
She looked away.
“I never planned to hurt her.””
Daniel remembered the slap.
“You already did.””
A tear fell.
But he could not tell if it was regret or frustration.
“Daniel, I loved you.””
He believed she believed that.
But love without respect was not enough.
“I loved who I thought you were.””
The words broke something in her face.
“What does that mean?””
“It means I don’t hate you.””
He stood.
“But I don’t know you anymore.””
That night, Daniel returned home.
Margaret was sitting in the garden.
The roses had started blooming again.
He sat beside her.
“I’m sorry.””
She looked confused.
“For what?””
“For all the years you carried this alone.””
Margaret smiled sadly.
“You were my son.””
“That doesn’t mean you had to sacrifice everything.””
She touched a rose.
“Sometimes love means carrying pain so someone else can walk freely.””
Daniel looked at her.
“No more secrets.””
She nodded.
“No more.””
For the first time in weeks, they sat in silence without fear.
Then a car stopped outside.
Daniel looked up.
A man stepped out.
An attorney.
He carried a briefcase.
“Daniel Hayes?””
“Yes.””
The attorney handed him an envelope.
“Your father requested this be delivered after everything came out.””
Daniel opened it.
Inside was one final letter.
He read the first sentence.
And his heart stopped.
*“Daniel, there is one more person who knew the truth before anyone else.””*
He turned the page.
The name appeared.
May you like
And Daniel realized the entire story had been missing one person.
The person closest to him.
