Chapter 7: The Man Who Came Back

The old hospital had been abandoned for years.

The windows were cracked.

The walls were covered with vines.

A place that once held thousands of memories now looked like it had been forgotten by the world.

Daniel parked outside and stared at the building.

Every instinct told him to leave.

But every unanswered question pulled him forward.

He entered through the broken front doors.

“Hello?””

His voice echoed.

Nothing.

Then footsteps.

Slow.

Careful.

An older man appeared from the hallway.

Daniel stopped.

The man looked exactly like the photograph.

Older.

Tired.

But unmistakable.

“Daniel.””

The name sounded strange coming from his father’s mouth.

Daniel’s hands curled into fists.

“Where have you been?””

Thomas Hayes looked down.

“That is a long story.””

“You have twenty-five years of explaining to do.””

The older man nodded.

“You’re right.””

They stood in silence.

Then Thomas said:

“Your mother kept you safe.””

Daniel frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“It means she did the hardest thing.””

“What?””

“She let you hate me.””

The words hit him.

Daniel looked away.

“I thought you abandoned us.””

“I know.””

“Did you know I waited for you?””

Thomas closed his eyes.

“Every birthday?””

Daniel froze.

“How do you know that?””

“Because I was there.””

The anger disappeared for a moment.

“What?””

“I watched from a distance.””

Daniel stared.

“You watched?””

“I had to.””

“Had to?””

Thomas stepped closer.

“Daniel, your grandfather was dangerous.””

“My grandfather?””

“No.””

Thomas shook his head.

“Lauren’s grandfather.””

The connection felt impossible.

Daniel whispered:

“Thomas Whitmore.””

“Yes.””

“He controlled everything.””

“Yes.””

“Why are you telling me now?””

Thomas looked at him.

“Because he’s dead.””

Daniel felt a chill.

“When?””

“Three months ago.””

“And Lauren?””

Thomas looked away.

“She inherited everything.””

Daniel understood.

The money.

The power.

The confidence.

Everything suddenly connected.

Thomas reached into his coat.

He handed Daniel a folder.

“What is this?””

“Evidence.””

Daniel opened it.

Inside were old documents.

Photos.

Letters.

And one document with Lauren’s signature.

His blood ran cold.

“What is this?””

Thomas answered quietly.

“An agreement.””

Daniel read the title.

A marriage arrangement.

His eyes moved across the page.

It was dated before he met Lauren.

“She planned this?””

Thomas nodded.

“She knew who you were.””

Daniel felt sick.

“She chose me because of my family?””

“Because of your father.””

Daniel looked up.

“Why?””

Thomas took a deep breath.

“Because she believes your father stole something from her family.””

“What?””

“A fortune.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“So this was revenge?””

“Yes.””

The word hung in the air.

Daniel remembered Lauren’s smile.

Her promises.

Her wedding vows that never happened.

All of it was a performance.

Then his phone rang.

Lauren.

He answered.

“What?””

Her voice was calm.

Too calm.

“Daniel.””

“What do you want?””

“I know where you are.””

His expression changed.

“How?””

“You really think you’re the only person who can investigate?””

Thomas looked concerned.

Daniel stepped away.

“What are you planning?””

Lauren sighed.

“I’m trying to stop you from making a mistake.””

“You mean exposing you?””

Silence.

Then she said:

“You don’t understand the whole story.””

Daniel looked at the folder.

“I understand enough.””

“No, you don’t.””

Her voice became sharper.

“Ask your father what he did.””

Daniel froze.

“What?””

“Ask him why he disappeared.””

The call ended.

Daniel looked at Thomas.

His father’s face had changed.

“You didn’t tell me everything.””

Thomas looked down.

“No.””

Daniel’s heart sank.

“What did you do?””

Thomas whispered:

“The reason Lauren’s family hates me…”

May you like

A pause.

“…is because I took something from them.””
