Amused

Chapter 6: The Evidence She Couldn't Explain

By 5:12 a.m., I had stopped thinking about the wedding.

I was thinking about my father.

About the little garage he had owned.

About the evenings he'd spent at the kitchen table sorting receipts and paying bills.

About the way he used to tell me that a person's reputation took years to build and only minutes to destroy.

Vanessa had chosen his name because she knew what it meant to me.

She wanted me frightened.

She wanted me distracted.

And she wanted Daniel standing beside her while I tried to defend myself.

The detective arrived at the hotel twenty minutes later.

He was in his early forties, wearing a dark jacket and carrying a leather folder.

"Emma Collins?""

"Yes.""

"Detective Harris.""

He shook my hand.

Daniel introduced himself, followed by Michael and Patricia.

Harris looked around the suite.

"Quite a morning.""

"You have no idea," Michael muttered.

I placed the fraudulent documents on the table.

"Everything Vanessa submitted is fabricated.""

Harris studied the first page.

"Do you know this company?""

"Northbridge Residential? No.""

"Have you ever worked for them?""

"No.""

"Did your father?""

"No.""

"Did he own property in Pennsylvania?""

"Never.""

Harris made a note.

"Do you have documentation confirming his death and the closure of the bank account?""

"Yes.""

I opened my folder.

He examined the death certificate, the estate documents, and the bank closure confirmation.

Then he compared the account numbers.

"These match," he said.

"Exactly.""

"Who had access to these records?""

I hesitated.

"Vanessa was present when I showed some of my wedding documents to the planner.""

"Was she ever alone with them?""

"I don't know.""

He nodded.

"That's important. We'll need to establish how the information was obtained.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"Detective, she's also been contacting me for months. I have messages.""

"Have you kept them?""

"Yes.""

"Good. Don't delete anything.""

Daniel unlocked his phone.

He showed Harris the messages from Vanessa.

The detective read them carefully.

One message caught my attention.

*You don't have to marry her just because you feel responsible for her.*

Another read:

*You deserve someone who understands what you need.*

Then there was one sent two weeks earlier.

*If she knew everything about her father's finances, she wouldn't be so confident.*

Harris looked up.

"What does this mean?""

Daniel shook his head.

"I don't know.""

I stared at the message.

It was dated two weeks before Vanessa had entered my room.

She had already been preparing the financial accusation.

The detective photographed the screen.

"Mr. Hayes, did you respond?""

"Yes.""

He opened the next message.

*Stop contacting me. I am marrying Emma. This is the last time I will ask you.*

Harris nodded.

"That helps establish a pattern of unwanted contact.""

Then he turned to me.

"Ms. Collins, do you have the original recording of the conversation you mentioned?""

I opened my phone.

"Yes.""

He listened through headphones.

His expression remained neutral, but when Vanessa said she intended to ruin my dress and hide the rings, he paused the recording.

"That's significant.""

"Can you use it?""

"It may help establish intent. We'll need the original file and its metadata.""

I handed him the phone.

He made a copy through the hotel's secure evidence process.

Then he asked something unexpected.

"Did Vanessa have any reason to believe she had a financial interest in your father's estate?""

I shook my head.

"None.""

"Had she ever asked you about your inheritance?""

I thought carefully.

"She asked about my apartment once. She wanted to know whether I'd bought it before or after my father died.""

"Anything else?""

"She asked whether I still had his bank statements.""

Harris looked up.

"When?""

"About four months ago.""

He wrote it down.

"That may be relevant.""

Daniel glanced at me.

"Why would she care about the bank statements?""

I didn't know.

Then Patricia spoke.

"Could it have something to do with the company?""

Everyone turned toward her.

She pointed at the Northbridge document.

"Richard Reed was a property developer. I remember his name from an old supplier dispute.""

Harris looked at her.

"Do you know him personally?""

"No. But I remember an incident involving a building renovation company. Several subcontractors complained that they hadn't been paid.""

Daniel searched his phone.

"Richard Reed has been involved in several property businesses.""

Patricia nodded.

"That sounds right.""

I looked at the fraudulent company name.

"Northbridge Residential.""

Harris closed his folder.

"I'll ask our financial crimes colleagues to review the registration information. For now, I want you to avoid contacting Vanessa directly.""

I almost laughed.

"I have no intention of speaking to her.""

"Good.""

He looked at George.

"Can we get the footage of the room entry and the evidence from Suite 1206?""

George nodded.

"Everything is being preserved.""

The detective stood.

"One more thing. Has Ms. Reed been told that you're aware of the report?""

"No.""

"Keep it that way until we've reviewed the material.""

I nodded.

But before he could leave, my phone buzzed.

A message from Vanessa.

*Emma, we need to talk. Please don't make this uglier than it has to be.*

I showed it to Harris.

He photographed the screen.

"Don't respond.""

Another message appeared.

*I know you're angry, but Daniel deserves to know the truth.*

Then another.

*You have no idea what your father did.*

I felt my face burn.

Daniel took my hand.

"Don't read any more.""

But I couldn't stop.

A fourth message arrived.

*I tried to protect you. Your father wasn't the man you think he was.*

I looked at Harris.

"Can she actually do this?""

"She can make allegations. That doesn't make them true.""

He paused.

"Let us investigate the source of the documents.""

At 6:03 a.m., Daniel and I were sitting alone in the second bridal suite.

The room was smaller than Room 814, but it had a balcony overlooking the hotel gardens.

My cousin Rachel had arrived with fresh clothes, sandwiches, and a bag containing my makeup.

She'd taken one look at my face and immediately hugged me.

"Tell me who I need to fight.""

I almost smiled.

"Apparently, my maid of honour.""

Rachel's expression hardened.

"Vanessa?""

I nodded.

"That woman?""

"Yes.""

Rachel put the sandwiches down.

"Emma, I always thought something was strange about her.""

I looked up.

"What?""

"At the engagement party, she asked me whether Daniel had ever talked about his finances.""

I stared at her.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"I didn't think anything of it. I thought she was just making conversation.""

I leaned back.

"She asked everyone questions.""

Rachel sat beside me.

"About what?""

"Money. My father. Daniel's family. The wedding.""

Rachel was quiet for a moment.

Then she said, "Emma, did you ever tell her about your father's estate?""

"Yes.""

"How much?""

I hesitated.

"Not everything. Just that he left me enough to help with the down payment on my apartment.""

Rachel frowned.

"Did you tell her where the money came from?""

"From his savings and the sale of his garage.""

She looked troubled.

"Then she knew you had an inheritance.""

I nodded.

Daniel came out of the bathroom, having changed into a clean shirt.

"What happened?""

Rachel explained.

He sat beside me.

"Emma, I think we need to contact your father's bank.""

"Why?""

"To find out whether anyone accessed the account information after it was closed.""

I looked at him.

"Can they tell us?""

"Possibly. They may need formal authorization, but we can start.""

I nodded.

Daniel called the bank's fraud department.

After several transfers, he finally reached someone who could help.

He explained the situation.

The representative asked for my identity details and the account number.

Then she placed us on hold.

I sat with my hands folded in my lap.

Three minutes passed.

Five.

Finally, the representative returned.

"Ms. Collins, I can confirm that the account was closed seven years ago.""

"Yes.""

"There have been no withdrawals since closure.""

I exhaled.

"Good.""

"However, I can see that an archived account statement was requested eleven weeks ago.""

I stopped breathing.

"What?""

The representative continued.

"The request was submitted through a branch service channel.""

"Who requested it?""

"I can't disclose that without further verification, but I can tell you the request was not submitted by you.""

I gripped Daniel's arm.

"Was it collected?""

"Yes.""

"By whom?""

There was another pause.

"According to the collection record, the person presented a signed authorization letter.""

My mouth went dry.

"Whose signature?""

"Yours, Ms. Collins.""

I shook my head.

"I never signed anything.""

Daniel leaned toward the phone.

"Can you send us a copy of the authorization?""

"We can arrange a formal investigation and provide the relevant documents to the appropriate authorities.""

"Please do that.""

The representative confirmed the reference number.

Then she added something else.

"There's one more detail.""

I looked at Daniel.

"What?""

"The authorization was witnessed by an employee of Northbridge Residential.""

The room went silent.

I slowly lowered the phone.

Northbridge.

Richard Reed.

Vanessa.

The pieces were connecting.

But the final connection was still missing.

Why would Vanessa need my father's bank statement?

What was she looking for?

Then Rachel noticed something on the table.

A small envelope had been tucked inside the bag she'd brought.

"Emma, what's this?""

I frowned.

"I don't know.""

She picked it up.

There was no return address.

Only my name.

I opened it.

Inside was a photocopy of a bank statement.

My father's old account.

At the bottom, someone had highlighted a transaction from seven years earlier.

A transfer of $48,000.

I stared at it.

"I don't understand.""

Daniel leaned closer.

"Where did that money go?""

I read the transaction description.

Then I recognized the destination.

It was my first apartment deposit.

The money my father had left me.

But beside the transaction was a handwritten note.

*This was never her money.*

I turned the page.

There was another document.

A company transfer record.

And a signature.

My father's signature.

I knew it immediately.

But the date was impossible.

The transfer had supposedly been authorized three months after his death.

I looked at Daniel.

"Someone forged my father's signature.""

He took the document.

Then he turned it over.

On the back was a printed photograph.

Vanessa stood beside a man in a dark suit outside a bank.

The man was older, with silver hair and a heavy build.

I recognized him from the company records.

Richard Reed.

Vanessa's father.

Below the photograph was a handwritten sentence.

*He didn't steal the money. He moved it before anyone could find out.*

I stared at the words.

Then my phone rang.

This time, the caller ID displayed Vanessa Reed.

Daniel shook his head.

"Don't answer.""

But the phone kept ringing.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Finally, a voicemail notification appeared.

I pressed play.

Vanessa's voice filled the room.

"Emma, I know you've found the documents. I know what you're thinking. But before you destroy everything, you need to understand something.""

She paused.

Then her voice became softer.

"Your father wasn't innocent. And if you marry Daniel today, the truth will destroy his family too.""

The message ended.

I looked at Daniel.

His face had gone completely white.

"What?"" I whispered.

He took the phone from my hand.

"Emma...""

"What is it?""

He swallowed.

Then he said the words I never expected to hear.

"My father knew Richard Reed.""

He stared at the photograph.

"And I think I know why Vanessa chose our wedding to expose this.""

I grabbed his arm.

"Why?""

Daniel looked directly at me.

"Because seven years ago, my father invested money in the same company your father supposedly transferred that $48,000 to.""

May you like

He paused.

"And according to our family records, that investment disappeared the day your father died.""
