Chapter 2: The Master Key
At 3:24 a.m., I was standing in the hotel's security office wearing yesterday's clothes and holding a paper cup of coffee I hadn't touched.
Martin sat behind a desk covered with incident reports.
Beside him was a security supervisor named George, a broad-shouldered man with grey hair and a wedding ring that had clearly seen decades of use.
"Let's go through this carefully," George said.
He turned his monitor toward me.
The corridor footage showed my bridal suite door.
At 1:46 a.m., a woman wearing a black cardigan approached.
She looked both ways before taking a keycard from her handbag.
Then she entered my room.
I leaned closer.
"Can you zoom in?""
George adjusted the footage.
The woman turned slightly toward the camera.
Vanessa.
There was no mistaking her.
She was wearing the same black cardigan I'd seen hanging over the chair in her room.
"How long was she inside?"" I asked.
"Approximately seven minutes," George replied.
"Seven minutes?""
"Yes.""
I stared at the screen.
"What happened to the footage from the corridor outside the connecting rooms?""
"That's a different camera. We're checking it now.""
Martin leaned forward.
"Ms. Collins, did you authorize your wedding planner to distribute master keys?""
"No.""
"Did you authorize anyone else?""
"No.""
"Then we need to establish how that key was obtained.""
George clicked another window.
A digital access log appeared.
"Your wedding planner, Mrs. Patricia Lawson, requested an emergency room entry at 1:42 a.m. The stated reason was a wardrobe malfunction involving the bridal gown.""
I stared at him.
"Patricia isn't here.""
"According to the hotel records, she requested the key remotely.""
"She lives forty minutes away.""
Martin frowned.
"That's what we thought.""
George opened another file.
"There's also a note attached to the request.""
He read it aloud.
"'Bride has requested urgent access to garment bag. Maid of honour authorized to collect spare materials.''"
I shook my head.
"I never requested that.""
"Do you know who submitted the request?""
George looked at the screen.
"Mrs. Lawson's account was used. But the request came from a telephone number ending in 8821.""
I knew that number.
Vanessa.
I had saved it under her name.
"Can you print that?""
"Certainly.""
Martin placed a fresh cup of coffee in front of me.
"Ms. Collins, I recommend we involve the police if you believe someone has stolen property or tampered with your wedding arrangements.""
"I will. But first, I need to know what's missing.""
George nodded.
"We can arrange for an escort while you inspect the room.""
Ten minutes later, I returned to Room 814 with Martin and a female security officer.
The bridal suite looked exactly as I'd left it.
Almost.
My dress was still hanging inside its garment bag.
My vows were on the nightstand.
The shoes were lined up beside the wardrobe.
But the small white envelope containing my grandmother's pearl earrings was gone.
I checked the drawer.
Nothing.
I checked the bathroom counter.
Nothing.
Then I noticed the dress.
The garment bag was zipped, but the zipper had been pulled almost to the top.
I hadn't left it like that.
"Please don't touch anything," Martin said.
I stepped back.
"Someone opened it.""
The security officer examined the zipper.
"There's no obvious damage.""
"Can we check the camera footage?""
George nodded.
"Already requested.""
I looked at the empty drawer.
"My grandmother's earrings were here.""
Martin wrote something down.
"Can you describe them?""
"Pearl drops. Gold setting. They belonged to her mother.""
"Are they valuable?""
"Not particularly.""
I looked at the dress.
"Not in money.""
Martin understood.
He didn't ask another question.
My phone vibrated.
Daniel.
I answered immediately.
"Where are you?""
"At home. Getting dressed. Are you okay?""
"Someone entered my room.""
"I know. The hotel called me.""
I glanced at Martin.
"Why did they call you?""
"They couldn't reach you, so they used the emergency contact information.""
I exhaled.
"Daniel, Vanessa was the person who entered.""
Silence.
Then he said, "I knew it.""
"She took something.""
"What?""
"My grandmother's earrings.""
"Emma, I'm coming.""
"No. Stay there.""
"Why?""
"Because she wants you alone.""
He didn't argue.
"Then I'll come with my brother.""
"Good. And Daniel?""
"Yes?""
"Don't bring Vanessa into this.""
"I wouldn't dream of it.""
When I ended the call, Martin approached me with a printed document.
"We found something else.""
He placed the paper on the table.
It was a photograph taken by the corridor camera at 1:53 a.m.
Vanessa was leaving my room.
In her right hand was a small white envelope.
My grandmother's earrings.
But there was something else.
A second image showed her stopping outside the room occupied by the wedding planner.
Except that room wasn't occupied by Patricia.
It was occupied by Daniel's younger sister, Olivia.
I frowned.
"Why was Vanessa going to Olivia's room?""
Martin enlarged the image.
"She didn't enter. She left something outside the door.""
A small folded piece of paper.
I looked at the timestamp.
1:54 a.m.
"Can we retrieve it?""
"We already have.""
George handed me a clear evidence sleeve.
Inside was a folded note.
I opened it carefully.
Five words were written in black ink.
*Ask Daniel what he did.*
My heart began beating harder.
"What does this mean?""
Martin looked at me.
"I was hoping you could tell us.""
I couldn't.
I photographed the note and sent it to Daniel.
His response came almost immediately.
*Don't believe anything she tells you.*
I stared at the message.
Then another arrived.
*Emma, I need to explain something before you hear it from someone else.*
My fingers went cold.
I typed.
*What?*
The reply took almost a minute.
*Two years ago, Vanessa told me she was pregnant.*
I read it once.
Then again.
The room seemed to tilt.
Martin asked whether I needed a chair.
I couldn't answer.
Another message appeared.
*She said the baby was mine.*
I looked at the screen.
There was no sound in the room.
No footsteps.
No voices.
Only the blood rushing through my ears.
Then Daniel called.
I answered.
"Tell me that's not true.""
His breathing was heavy.
"Emma, it isn't true.""
"Then why would she say it?""
"Because she wanted me to leave you.""
"Did you know?""
"I knew she claimed it. I never believed her.""
"Did you ask for proof?""
"Yes.""
"And?""
"She refused.""
I pressed my fingers against my forehead.
"Daniel, why am I only hearing this thirteen hours before our wedding?""
He went quiet.
Then he said, "Because she told me she'd keep it secret if I stayed away from her.""
I closed my eyes.
"That doesn't make sense.""
"She said she'd move on. She said she'd never interfere with us again.""
"And you believed her?""
"I wanted to believe her.""
I looked at the note inside the evidence sleeve.
Ask Daniel what he did.
"Was there a pregnancy test?""
"No.""
"A hospital record?""
"No.""
"A child?""
"No, Emma. There was never a baby.""
"Then why would she invent something like that?""
Daniel's voice dropped.
"Because she knew I would feel guilty. And because she knew you'd never forgive me if you thought I'd been hiding a child from you.""
I stared at the hotel carpet.
A woman could invent a pregnancy.
She could steal earrings.
She could arrange a fake emergency.
But why had she gone to such lengths?
"What happened after that?"" I asked.
"She contacted me again three months later. She said she'd made a mistake. That she had confused her feelings. I told her never to contact me again.""
"And then?""
"She started sending messages to my sister.""
My stomach tightened.
"Olivia?""
"Yes.""
"What did she tell her?""
"That I was involved with someone else before you. That I was hiding something about my finances. She tried to convince Olivia I wasn't ready to marry you.""
I looked at the note again.
"Did Olivia believe her?""
"I don't know.""
At that moment, someone knocked on the suite door.
Three quick knocks.
Then a woman's voice.
"Emma? It's Olivia.""
I looked at Martin.
He nodded toward the security officer.
She opened the door.
Olivia stood outside wearing a pale blue sweater and black trousers. Her eyes were red, and she was clutching her phone.
She looked at me.
Then at the evidence sleeve.
"Oh, God.""
"Olivia?""
She swallowed.
"I saw the note.""
"Did Vanessa tell you something?""
Olivia nodded slowly.
"She said Daniel had been paying her to keep quiet.""
I felt my knees weaken.
"Paying her for what?""
May you like
Olivia looked directly at me.
"She said he paid her to pretend the baby wasn't his.""
