Chapter 7: My Mother’s Final Message

I read my mother’s letter three times.

Then a fourth.

Because my brain refused to accept the words.

My mother had written them.

Not years later.

Not as a rumor.

As a warning.

*If anything happens to me, Blake needs to know the truth about George.*

My hands trembled.

“Dad…”

He sat across from me.

“I wanted to protect you.””

“You protected me by lying?””

The question hurt him.

I saw it.

But I needed an answer.

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised me.

“I thought if I buried the past, it couldn’t hurt you.””

I looked at the letter again.

“It came back anyway.””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

For years, I thought my father’s silence came from weakness.

Now I realized it came from fear.

But fear didn’t make the truth disappear.

“What happened that night?””

My father stared out the window.

“Your mother found financial records.””

“What records?””

“George had been moving company money.””

I froze.

“He was stealing?””

My father nodded.

“Millions.””

I stood.

“But you said he helped build the company.””

“He did.””

My father’s voice cracked.

“That was the hardest part.””

He looked at me.

“George wasn’t always a bad man.””

The sentence bothered me.

Because I wanted him to be simple.

I wanted villains to be easy to recognize.

But real betrayal rarely comes from strangers.

It comes from people you invited inside.

“He begged me not to report him,” my father continued.

“What did you do?””

“I gave him a chance to fix it.””

I stared.

“You let him go?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because your mother asked me to.””

I looked confused.

“My mother?””

“She believed people deserved a chance to change.””

He smiled sadly.

“She was always better than me.””

I looked back at the letter.

“Then why did he try to hurt her?””

My father’s face changed.

“He panicked.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What does that mean?””

“He thought your mother had copied evidence.””

“Did she?””

My father nodded.

“She gave it to someone.””

“Who?””

Before he could answer, there was a knock at the door.

Michael entered.

His face was serious.

“Mr. Henderson.””

My father stood.

“What happened?””

Michael looked at me.

“The documents were leaked.””

My stomach dropped.

“What documents?””

“The ones proving George’s fraud.””

My father stared.

“Who released them?””

Michael hesitated.

Then handed him a phone.

On the screen was a news alert.

*Billionaire Investor George Martinez Accused of Corporate Fraud After Hidden Records Surface*

I stared.

Someone had exposed George.

Someone had chosen to fight back.

But who?

Michael answered before I asked.

“We don’t know.””

My father looked at the message attached to the report.

Then his face went pale.

“What?””

I stepped closer.

“What does it say?””

He handed me the phone.

There was one sentence.

*For Daniel Henderson. She never stopped protecting you.*

My heart stopped.

“She?””

My father whispered one name.

May you like

A name I hadn’t heard in years.

“Your mother.””
