Amused

Chapter 4: The Plan Behind the Smile

The attorney arrived that afternoon.

His name was Richard Cole.

He carried a leather briefcase and the expression of someone who had spent years cleaning up powerful people’s mistakes.

My father invited him inside.

Richard placed several documents on the table.

“George Martinez has been researching Henderson Industrial for months.””

I looked at my father.

“Why?””

Richard opened a folder.

“Because he discovered your father still owns controlling shares.””

The room became silent.

“How much?””

Richard looked at me.

“Enough that George wanted access.””

My stomach turned.

Fiona.

Her family.

The wedding.

None of it was random.

“They knew?””

My father nodded.

“Not at first.””

Richard continued.

“George discovered the truth after seeing your father’s name on a shareholder document.””

I picked up the papers.

There were emails.

Meetings.

Financial reports.

Then I saw Fiona’s name.

My hands went cold.

“She knew?””

My father didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

I called her.

She picked up immediately.

“Blake?””

Her voice sounded tired.

“We need to talk.””

A pause.

“About what?””

I laughed.

“About whether you ever loved me.””

Silence.

Then:

“Of course I did.””

“Did you know who my father was?””

Another pause.

That pause told me everything.

“Blake—”

“You knew.””

“I found out recently.””

“Before the wedding?””

“Please listen.””

“No. You listen.””

My voice shook.

“You let your mother insult him.””

“I didn’t think she would say that.””

“But you laughed.””

Silence.

Finally, she whispered:

“I was embarrassed.””

Not sorry.

Embarrassed.

I closed my eyes.

“Goodbye, Fiona.””

I hung up.

That evening, my father and I sat outside.

For the first time in years, we talked honestly.

“I’m sorry,” he said.

“For what?””

“For letting you believe I was powerless.””

I looked at him.

“You never were.””

He smiled.

Then Michael arrived.

His face was serious.

“Mr. Henderson.””

My father stood.

“What happened?””

Michael handed him a tablet.

“George Martinez made his move.””

My father looked at the screen.

Then his expression changed.

“What?””

I stepped closer.

“What is it?””

Michael looked at me.

“Your father’s company shares were frozen this morning.””

“How?””

Michael hesitated.

“Because someone inside the company helped him.””

My father stared at the name on the screen.

A name I recognized.

Someone who had been standing beside us at the wedding.

Someone who had smiled while my father was humiliated.

Michael turned the tablet toward me.

May you like

And I saw it.

The name of the person who betrayed us.
