Chapter 5: The Secret Behind The Disappearance
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Victoria’s words stayed in the room like smoke.
Impossible to ignore.
Impossible to see clearly.
*Daniel Brooks helped your father disappear.*
I looked at Daniel.
Then at Victoria.
Then back at Daniel.
The strange thing was, I wasn’t shocked.
Not completely.
Because deep down, I had already felt it.
The hesitation.
The missing pieces.
The way Daniel answered only what I asked, never what I needed to know.
But feeling suspicious and hearing an accusation were two different things.
“Explain,” I said.
My voice sounded calmer than I felt.
Daniel looked at Victoria.
“You shouldn’t be here.””
She laughed bitterly.
“That’s what you say?””
Her hands shook slightly.
“You’re the one who has been hiding things for ten years.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””
“No?””
Victoria stepped into the room.
“My father told me everything.””
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“Your father lies when it benefits him.””
“And you expect me to believe you?””
“No.””
His answer surprised both of us.
Daniel looked tired.
“I expect you to look at the facts.””
Victoria pointed at him.
“The fact is that Claire’s father vanished the same week you became a senior executive at Bellavelle.””
Daniel didn’t respond.
The silence was enough.
My stomach tightened.
I turned toward him.
“Is that true?””
“Yes.””
The honesty caught me off guard.
“You admit it?””
“Yes.””
Victoria crossed her arms.
“See?””
I ignored her.
“Why?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Because your father asked me to help him disappear.””
The room became silent again.
This time, I felt something break inside.
Not because of what Victoria said.
Because Daniel confirmed part of it.
My voice dropped.
“You helped him leave?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Daniel looked at the old photograph on the wall.
The one showing him and my father.
“Because he was going to die if he stayed.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
Daniel walked slowly toward the desk.
“Your father found evidence against Richard Hale.””
“Evidence about the stolen designs?””
“Yes.””
“And?””
“And Richard found out that Thomas knew.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What did Richard do?””
Daniel looked at Victoria.
She looked away.
That told me enough.
“He threatened him.””
“With what?””
Daniel hesitated.
“With you.””
The room felt smaller.
I gripped the edge of the desk.
“My father left because he was protecting me?””
Daniel nodded.
“He believed Richard would destroy anyone who tried to expose him.””
Victoria immediately shook her head.
“My father would never hurt Claire.””
I looked at her.
“You keep saying that.””
“Because it’s true.””
“Do you know what your father did?””
She opened her mouth.
Then stopped.
That pause said more than words.
Daniel walked toward the window.
“Thomas had planned to reveal everything at a press conference.””
“When?””
“Ten years ago.””
I remembered that year.
The year everything changed.
The year I thought my father abandoned me.
“He never showed up.””
“No.””
“Because he ran?””
Daniel shook his head.
“Because someone attacked him.””
My breathing stopped.
“What?””
Victoria looked shocked too.
Daniel continued.
“Your father was leaving the Bellavelle headquarters with the evidence when his car was forced off the road.””
“Was he hurt?””
“Badly.””
I closed my eyes.
All these years, I imagined my father choosing to leave.
Choosing not to call.
Choosing not to come home.
But maybe he had been fighting just to survive.
“What happened after?””
Daniel’s voice became quieter.
“I found him.””
“When?””
“Hours later.””
“And you helped him disappear.””
“Yes.””
I stared at him.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Daniel looked down.
“Because he made me promise.””
“A promise?””
“He told me if Richard believed he was alive, he would come after you.””
I shook my head.
“That doesn’t explain everything.””
“No.””
Daniel looked at me.
“It doesn’t.””
The honesty hurt more.
“What are you not telling me?””
Before Daniel could answer, Victoria spoke.
“Because there’s more.””
We both looked at her.
She stood near the doorway.
Her confidence was gone.
“My father didn’t just threaten Thomas.””
She swallowed.
“He destroyed the evidence.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“How do you know that?””
Victoria looked uncomfortable.
“Because I found something.””
She reached into her handbag.
For a moment, I thought she would pull out another accusation.
Instead, she pulled out an old envelope.
She placed it on the desk.
“My father kept this hidden.””
I looked at the envelope.
“What is it?””
“A letter.””
“From who?””
Victoria hesitated.
“Your mother.””
My heart stopped.
“My mother?””
She nodded.
“I found it last month.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Why didn’t you tell anyone?””
“Because I didn’t understand it.””
I opened the envelope carefully.
Inside was a single page.
The handwriting was familiar.
My mother’s.
Claire,
If you ever find this, it means the truth finally came back to you.
I know you will hate me for what happened.
You will think I betrayed your father.
You will think I chose money over family.
But I need you to know one thing.
I tried to stop them.
I read the sentence twice.
My hands trembled.
The letter continued.
Richard discovered Thomas’s plans.
He knew the designs belonged to your father.
He knew the world would believe him.
So he created a story.
A story where Thomas was the thief.
A story where I was the person who helped him.
A story where you would hate us both.
My eyes blurred.
I kept reading.
The truth is hidden where your father’s first masterpiece was created.
Not Bellavelle.
Not the company.
Home.
The letter ended there.
No signature.
No explanation.
Just one final line.
*Trust the place where the first diamond was cut.*
I looked up.
“My father’s workshop.””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“That’s what I thought.””
Victoria looked at me.
“Where is it?””
I didn’t answer.
Because I knew.
The old workshop.
The place I hadn’t visited since I was twenty-four.
The place where my father taught me everything.
The place where he disappeared from.
“It was sold,” I whispered.
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“The workshop was never sold.””
My eyes narrowed.
“How do you know?””
Another pause.
Another secret.
Daniel sighed.
“Because I bought it.””
The room went silent.
“You bought my father’s workshop?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because your father asked me to.””
I stepped back.
The pieces were moving too quickly.
Too many secrets.
Too many people connected to my past.
Too many years where everyone knew something except me.
Then my phone rang.
The number was unknown.
Again.
Everyone looked at it.
I answered.
“Hello?””
No voice.
Only silence.
Then a recording began playing.
My own voice.
A conversation from earlier that afternoon.
My voice saying:
“I hope you’re doing well, Victoria.””
I froze.
Someone had recorded me.
Then another voice appeared.
A man’s voice.
Cold.
Calm.
Familiar.
“Claire Bennett.””
I stopped breathing.
Because I knew that voice.
I had heard it years ago.
The last night my father disappeared.
The man continued.
“You have spent your entire life believing your father abandoned you.””
A pause.
“But the truth is much worse.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“Who is this?””
The man ignored my question.
“He left because he discovered the person closest to him betrayed him.””
I looked at Victoria.
Then Daniel.
Then the letter in my hand.
The man laughed softly.
“And if you want to know who that person was…”
The recording cut off.
The screen went black.
A second later, another message appeared.
A photograph.
An old photograph.
My father standing outside his workshop.
Beside him was another person.
Someone I recognized immediately.
Someone who made my heart stop.
Because the person standing next to my father wasn’t Daniel.
It wasn’t Victoria’s father.
It wasn’t even my mother.
It was me.
But I was only twenty years old.
And beneath the photograph was a date.
A date from eleven years ago.
A year before my father disappeared.
A year before I thought I knew my own life.
May you like
And underneath it was a single sentence.
*Ask yourself why your father was afraid of you.*
