Chapter 5: The People Who Helped Him Take Her
The stranger’s words stayed in the air long after he stopped speaking.
Your husband didn’t steal your child alone.
Not Daniel.
Not alone.
My eyes moved slowly across the church.
To Linda.
To Robert.
To the empty space where Daniel’s coffin sat.
The people who had spent years telling me they loved me were suddenly strangers wearing familiar faces.
The stranger walked closer.
“I’m Thomas Reed.””
The name meant nothing.
But the reaction around me meant everything.
Robert’s face had gone pale.
Linda grabbed the back of the pew for support.
Daniel’s brother Chris looked like he wanted to disappear.
“You know him,” I said.
It wasn’t a question.
Robert looked at the floor.
That was enough.
Thomas placed the folder on the pew again.
“I worked with Daniel fifteen years ago.””
“Worked with him doing what?”” I asked.
Thomas looked at Robert.
Then at me.
“Covering up the truth.””
The church erupted in whispers.
The priest quietly stepped away.
He had stopped trying to control the situation.
Everyone had.
Because this was no longer a funeral.
It was an investigation.
I walked toward the folder.
My legs felt heavy.
Like every step carried fifteen years of grief.
I opened it.
The first page was a document.
A hospital record.
My eyes scanned the page.
Then stopped.
My hands went numb.
The name at the top.
Mine.
The date.
The day Anna was born.
The words beneath it.
*Mother: Claire Morgan.*
My breathing changed.
Because seeing proof of something I already knew shouldn’t have hurt.
But it did.
It was real.
I was her mother.
I always had been.
I turned the page.
The next document was different.
A legal agreement.
My eyes moved across the words.
And then I saw Daniel’s signature.
My stomach twisted.
“What is this?””
Nobody answered.
I looked at Thomas.
“Tell me.””
He stepped closer.
“Before Anna was born, Daniel found out about a medical complication during your pregnancy.””
I frowned.
“What complication?””
Thomas hesitated.
“He was told there was a possibility you could have serious health problems after giving birth.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
I remembered that pregnancy.
The appointments.
The tests.
The fear.
The doctors never told me that.
Because there was nothing to tell.
“Daniel lied.””
Thomas nodded.
“He exaggerated it.””
My fingers tightened around the paper.
“Why?””
Thomas looked at Robert.
“Because he was afraid.””
Again.
That word.
The word everyone kept using.
But this time, I didn’t want to hear it.
Fear didn’t excuse cruelty.
Fear didn’t erase choices.
“What did he want?””
Thomas took a breath.
“Control.””
The answer was simple.
And somehow worse.
“He wanted to make sure Anna would be raised in his family.””
My eyes moved to Linda and Robert.
“And they agreed?””
Nobody spoke.
Thomas answered for them.
“Yes.””
Linda suddenly broke.
“I never wanted to hurt you.””
I turned toward her.
“How many times are you going to say that?””
She cried harder.
“I loved you.””
“Then why?””
Her lips trembled.
“Because Daniel convinced us.””
I laughed quietly.
A painful sound.
“Of course.””
I looked around.
“Everyone always says Daniel convinced them.””
Chris looked down.
Mark, Daniel’s business partner, was sitting frozen.
Even the people who came to honor him were beginning to realize they had not known him either.
Linda stepped forward.
“He told us you were unstable after the birth.””
My entire body went still.
“What?””
She looked ashamed.
“He said you were depressed. That you weren’t bonding with the baby.””
The room became blurry.
Because that was not just a lie.
That was my worst nightmare.
After Anna was born, I remembered feeling exhausted.
Overwhelmed.
Scared.
But happy.
So unbelievably happy.
I remembered holding my baby against my chest.
Whispering promises.
I remembered telling Daniel:
“She’s perfect.””
And he smiled.
He smiled while planning to take her away.
“He told us you would hurt yourself,” Linda whispered.
I stared at her.
“You believed him?””
She cried.
“He was our son.””
“And I was nothing?””
“No.””
“Yes.””
My voice cracked.
“You chose him.””
Linda had no answer.
Because she did.
Everyone did.
Everyone chose Daniel.
Everyone except the daughter he stole from me.
Anna stood nearby, listening.
Her face had changed.
She wasn’t just hearing about my pain anymore.
She was hearing about her own.
“My whole life…”
Her voice shook.
“My whole life was built on this?””
I turned toward her.
“I’m sorry.””
She looked at me.
And that hurt more than anger would have.
Because she looked lost.
Not hateful.
Lost.
“I don’t know who I am.””
Those words broke something inside me.
Because I knew exactly how she felt.
Daniel had taken away both our truths.
“I don’t either,” I whispered.
For a moment, we just stood there.
Two people grieving the same man for completely different reasons.
Thomas cleared his throat.
“There’s more.””
I closed my eyes.
Of course there was.
There was always more.
“What else?””
He opened the folder and removed another document.
“This was created six months after Anna was born.””
I looked at it.
“What is it?””
“A custody agreement.””
My heart stopped.
“Custody?””
Thomas nodded.
“Daniel planned to legally remove you from Anna’s life.””
The church went silent.
“He was going to take me to court?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t he?””
Thomas looked uncomfortable.
“Because something changed.””
“What?””
He looked at Sarah.
Sarah lowered her eyes.
I felt cold.
“What changed?””
Nobody wanted to answer.
Finally, Sarah spoke.
“Daniel changed his mind.””
I stared at her.
“Why?””
She looked at Anna.
“Because he realized Anna would eventually ask questions.””
My hands shook.
“So he kept me away because it was easier?””
Sarah nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
The truth hurt.
But at least it was finally truth.
Anna stepped toward Thomas.
“What is on the flash drive?””
Everyone looked at her.
Thomas stared at the small device in her hand.
“Something Daniel recorded.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“Recorded?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Thomas gave a sad smile.
“Because Daniel was many things.””
A pause.
“But he was also a man who knew he had done something unforgivable.””
The words surprised me.
I didn’t expect anyone to defend him.
But Thomas wasn’t.
He was explaining.
“There are videos on that drive.””
Anna looked down.
“Of what?””
Thomas answered quietly.
“Of Daniel talking about what happened.””
The room changed.
Because suddenly the dead man had a voice again.
A voice that could explain.
A voice that could confess.
Robert stepped forward.
“No.””
Everyone turned.
He looked terrified.
“No one needs to watch that.””
Anna held the flash drive tighter.
“Why?””
Robert didn’t answer.
“Why don’t we need to watch it?””
His silence was enough.
I walked toward him.
“You knew about the recordings.””
His eyes met mine.
For the first time, he looked afraid of me.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Robert swallowed.
“Because Daniel made them when he started regretting what he did.””
I stared at him.
“Regretting?””
“Yes.””
A bitter smile crossed my face.
“Regret is easy when you’ve already stolen someone’s life.””
Nobody spoke.
I looked at Anna.
Then at the flash drive.
“Where can we watch it?””
Robert immediately said:
“Claire, don’t.””
I turned.
“Don’t what?””
His voice softened.
“You don’t know what you’re going to see.””
I held his gaze.
“I spent fifteen years not knowing anything.””
I took the flash drive from Anna.
“I think I can handle the truth.””
We moved to a small room at the back of the church.
Emily followed.
Sarah followed.
Anna followed.
And after a moment of hesitation, Thomas joined us.
Nobody invited Daniel’s parents.
They stayed outside.
Maybe because they were ashamed.
Maybe because they were afraid.
Thomas connected the flash drive to his laptop.
A single video file appeared.
No title.
Just a date.
The date was two days before Daniel’s accident.
I stopped breathing.
The day before he died.
Thomas clicked play.
The screen flickered.
And then Daniel appeared.
Older.
Tired.
Sitting alone in his office.
For a moment, I forgot how angry I was.
Because I saw my husband.
The man I loved.
The man who made me laugh.
The man who destroyed me.
Daniel looked directly into the camera.
And then he said:
“If Claire is watching this, then I’m already gone.””
Anna covered her mouth.
Daniel continued.
“I don’t deserve forgiveness.””
My heart tightened.
Because those were not the words of the confident man everyone knew.
Those were the words of someone terrified.
Someone who knew the truth was coming.
Then Daniel looked down.
And said:
“There is one thing Claire still doesn’t know.””
The room went silent.
I leaned closer to the screen.
Daniel took a deep breath.
“The reason I took Anna wasn’t because of my parents.””
A pause.
“It wasn’t because of money.””
His eyes filled with tears.
“It was because someone threatened to take her away from all of us.””
I froze.
All of us?
Daniel looked directly into the camera.
And whispered:
“Claire, the person who started this entire nightmare…”
The video glitched.
The screen went black.
A loading circle appeared.
Then one final frame flashed.
A name.
A name I recognized.
A name that made Sarah gasp.
May you like
Because it belonged to someone who had been sitting quietly in that church the entire time.
*Mark.*
