The Wedding That Exposed Him / Chapter 5 / 10

Chapter 5: The Truth Beneath The Name

Her name was Elena Mercer.

And she carried twelve years of silence in the way she stood.

Not broken.

Not weak.

Surviving.

We moved back inside the chapel.

The wedding decorations looked almost ridiculous now.

White flowers.

Golden ribbons.

A perfect fantasy built on rotten wood.

Elena sat across from Daniel.

“You always looked so comfortable wearing his name.””

Daniel said nothing.

“Younger brother.””

The words were quiet.

But they cut.

“You took everything.””

Daniel’s hands tightened.

“You don’t know what happened.””

Elena laughed softly.

“I know exactly what happened.””

Charles Mercer stood near the wall.

Silent.

Watching.

I looked at him.

“You knew.””

He didn’t answer.

That was enough.

Elena continued.

“Jonathan discovered what Charles and Daniel were doing.””

The room went quiet.

“The fake companies. The stolen money. The construction fraud.””

Daniel shook his head.

“Lies.””

Elena looked at him.

“You were always good at that.””

I watched Daniel.

The man who had convinced hundreds of people he was successful.

The man who had convinced me I was lucky.

Now he looked smaller.

Human.

And terrified.

Elena reached into her bag.

She removed a small recorder.

“I kept this for twelve years.””

She pressed a button.

Jonathan’s voice filled the room.

“If anything happens to me, it wasn’t an accident.””

Charles closed his eyes.

The recording continued.

“Daniel knows. My father knows. They think they can bury the truth.””

A gasp moved through the chapel.

Then Jonathan said one final thing.

“The person who helps them most is the one nobody suspects.””

The recording ended.

Everyone looked around.

Nobody knew who that meant.

Then Elena looked at Charles.

“No one suspected the accountant.””

Charles went pale.

Not Daniel.

Not Evelyn.

Charles.

Daniel looked confused.

“What?””

Elena turned toward him.

“Your father didn’t protect you.””

A pause.

“He used you.””

For the first time all day, Daniel looked at Charles like he was seeing a stranger.

The powerful Mercer family.

The empire.

The reputation.

Everything they built.

Everything they destroyed.

It had never been Daniel’s story alone.

I looked at the altar where I was supposed to promise forever.

Then I looked at Daniel.

“You thought you trapped me.””

He said nothing.

I picked up my fallen bouquet.

“You were wrong.””

Outside, sirens approached.

Blue lights reflected against the stained-glass windows.

Daniel stared toward the entrance.

Then his phone buzzed.

He looked down.

A message appeared.

One sentence.

*Your account has been frozen.*

His face changed.

Because he finally understood.

May you like

The cage he built for me had closed.

Just not around me.
