Chapter 4: The Woman He Chose To Destroy
For years, I believed Daniel found me by accident.
That was the cruelest part.
I thought our first meeting meant something.
I thought the way he looked at me across that restaurant meant he saw me.
Not my company.
Not my family name.
Me.
I was wrong.
Rebecca handed me the email.
I read it once.
Then again.
The words didn’t change.
“Target identified.””
“Financial access possible.””
“Marriage strategy recommended.””
I stopped breathing.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Claire—”
I looked up.
“Don’t.””
One word.
And for the first time, he obeyed.
The chapel behind us was full of people.
But I felt completely alone.
“You planned this.””
Daniel’s face hardened.
“No.””
I held up the paper.
“You researched me before we met.””
“That doesn’t mean—”
“You knew my company was vulnerable.””
Silence.
“You knew I trusted people too easily.””
Silence.
“You chose me.””
Finally, he said:
“I chose an opportunity.””
Everyone heard.
Because he forgot the doors were open.
Because he forgot people were listening.
My father closed his eyes.
Sophie covered her mouth.
Daniel realized what he had done.
But it was too late.
Rebecca stepped forward.
“Daniel Mercer, you need to understand something.””
He looked at her.
“This conversation is now evidence.””
His expression changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
Not because he was sorry.
Because consequences had finally arrived.
Then a black SUV stopped outside the chapel.
Two people stepped out.
A woman and a man.
The woman looked older.
Tired.
But her eyes were familiar.
She walked toward us.
Daniel saw her.
And whispered:
“No.””
Everyone turned.
The woman stopped in front of him.
“Hello, Daniel.””
He stepped back.
“Impossible.””
She looked at the crowd.
Then at me.
“I’m sorry it took this long.””
I stared at her.
“Who are you?””
The woman looked at Daniel.
Then answered:
“I’m Jonathan Mercer’s wife.””
The chapel exploded with whispers.
Daniel’s face became unreadable.
“You died.””
The woman smiled sadly.
“No.””
May you like
She looked directly at him.
“You made sure everyone thought I did.””
