Amused

Chapter 9: The Final Letter

I found the letter that night.

Not in the safe.

Not in the drawer where I kept Laura’s memories.

Somewhere much more painful.

Inside Emily’s old baby box.

The box I hadn’t opened in years.

My daughter sat beside me on the bedroom floor.

Maria sat quietly nearby.

The wedding was canceled.

The guests were gone.

The flowers had been removed.

But the damage remained.

I opened the envelope.

The handwriting immediately brought tears to my eyes.

Daniel,

If you are reading this, something happened that made you search for answers.

I stopped.

Because Laura knew.

She knew something might happen.

I kept reading.

I want you to remember one thing.

Love should never require you to abandon someone innocent.

My eyes moved to Emily.

She was watching me.

“Is Mommy talking to you?””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

“Is she mad?””

I smiled through tears.

“No, sweetheart.””

I looked at the letter.

“She’s reminding me to protect you.””

The letter continued.

I met someone who asked too many questions about our family.

Someone who wanted to become close too quickly.

I was afraid I was wrong.

I hoped I was wrong.

But a mother knows when something feels dangerous.

My hands trembled.

Laura knew.

She knew Rebecca.

The final lines destroyed me.

Daniel,

If Rebecca ever becomes part of your life, please remember this:

The person who truly loves Emily will never ask you to choose.

I closed my eyes.

Because that was exactly what Rebecca had done.

She had forced a choice.

And expected me to fail.

The next morning, I filed everything.

The recordings.

The documents.

The messages.

The threats toward Maria.

Rebecca tried to explain.

She called twenty times.

I answered once.

“Daniel, please listen.””

“No.””

“I made mistakes.””

“You planned to remove my daughter.””

“I was scared.””

“You were selfish.””

Silence.

Then she whispered:

“I really did love you.””

I looked at Emily playing in the backyard.

“She deserves someone who loves her more.””

Rebecca didn’t respond.

Then the line went dead.

Three days later, I received a letter.

From Rebecca’s lawyer.

Inside was one sentence.

Rebecca wanted to meet.

I almost refused.

But then I saw the final line.

It said:

I know who Emily’s real biological father is.

I stared at the words.

Because they made no sense.

Emily was my daughter.

Everyone knew that.

But there was something Rebecca knew.

May you like

Something she had saved.

Something she was using as her last weapon.
