Chapter 6: The Man Who Knew My Wife’s Secret

Thomas didn’t say anything at first.
He just stared at Rebecca.
Not with anger.
With disappointment.
And somehow, that was worse.
The chapel remained frozen around us. The guests who had arrived expecting flowers, champagne, and a beautiful wedding were now watching a family fall apart in real time.
Rebecca held her phone tightly.
“Why are you calling me?”” she whispered.
Thomas’ voice came through the speaker because the silence was so complete.
“Because I heard what happened.””
Rebecca looked toward the doors.
“How?””
I took one step forward.
“How did he hear about this?””
Nobody answered.
Then Thomas spoke again.
“Daniel deserves the truth.””
Rebecca’s face turned pale.
“Thomas, don’t do this.””
“Don’t do what? Tell him what you’ve been hiding?””
My grip tightened around Emily.
I felt her small heartbeat against my chest.
“Tell me,” I said.
Rebecca looked at me.
“Daniel, please.””
That word almost made me laugh.
Please.
The same woman who had planned to send my daughter away was now asking for mercy.
Thomas continued.
“Three months ago, Rebecca contacted me.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
A long pause.
Then Thomas said:
“She wanted information about Emily’s mother.””
My stomach dropped.
My late wife, Laura.
The woman who had loved Emily more than anything in the world.
“What kind of information?””
Thomas sighed.
“Before Laura died, she created a trust for Emily.””
The room became silent again.
I knew about the trust.
It was small compared to what I had built over the years, but it was meant for Emily when she turned eighteen.
Money for college.
For her future.
For the life Laura would never get to see.
Thomas continued.
“Rebecca wanted access to it.””
I looked at Rebecca.
“No.””
She immediately shook her head.
“That’s not true.””
Thomas didn’t stop.
“She asked if becoming Emily’s legal guardian would give her control over the account.””
My daughter buried her face deeper into my shoulder.
I felt sick.
All those months.
All those conversations.
All those moments when Rebecca told me she loved Emily.
Was any of it real?
Rebecca stepped toward me.
“Daniel, listen to me.””
I stepped back.
“No.””
Her eyes filled with frustration.
“You’re misunderstanding everything.””
“Then explain.””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
That silence told me more than any confession.
Thomas spoke again.
“There’s more.””
Everyone looked toward the phone.
“Rebecca didn’t just ask about the trust.””
My heart sank.
“What else?””
Thomas hesitated.
“She asked me if Laura had left any letters.””
I felt the air leave my lungs.
Letters.
Before Laura passed, she wrote letters for Emily.
One for every birthday until she turned eighteen.
I had kept them hidden away.
A gift from a mother who knew she wouldn’t be there.
Rebecca knew about them.
“How did she know?””
Nobody answered.
Then Maria spoke quietly.
“I told her.””
Everyone turned.
Maria looked devastated.
“Rebecca asked me about Emily’s mother. She said she wanted to understand Emily better.””
She looked down.
“I thought she was trying to become closer to her.””
I closed my eyes.
Because that was the hardest part.
Rebecca didn’t destroy us with one terrible act.
She destroyed us with thousands of small lies.
Rebecca suddenly grabbed her purse.
“I’m leaving.””
I looked at her.
“You’re leaving?””
“Yes.””
She looked around the chapel.
“You’ve already decided I’m the villain.””
“No,” I said.
My voice was calm.
“You decided that when you planned my daughter’s disappearance before our wedding.””
She stared at me.
Then she whispered:
“You’ll regret this.””
She walked toward the chapel doors.
But before she reached them, Thomas spoke one final sentence.
“Rebecca.””
She stopped.
“There’s one more thing Daniel needs to know.””
She slowly turned around.
Thomas’ voice became quiet.
“Emily was never the reason you wanted this marriage.””
Rebecca froze.
“Your real reason was…”
The call suddenly disconnected.
Everyone looked at the phone.
The screen went black.
And Rebecca smiled.
May you like
Not because she was relieved.
Because she knew something we didn’t.
