Amused

Chapter 7: The Funeral That Never Happened

Every person in the ballroom turned.

Not toward me.

Not toward Lily.

Toward Margaret.

The woman who had stood beside my bed twenty years ago.

The woman who had held my hands while I cried.

The woman who had looked me in the eyes and told me the words that destroyed my hope.

“Daniel is gone.””

I remembered that morning perfectly.

The smell of hospital coffee.

The rain tapping against the windows.

The coldness of the chair beneath me.

Margaret sitting beside me with tears running down her face.

She had looked so broken.

So devastated.

I believed her because she looked like someone who had lost someone too.

Now I wondered…

Had she been mourning?

Or had she been performing?

“Evelyn.””

Margaret’s voice pulled me back.

Everyone was watching her.

Her perfect image was gone.

The elegant philanthropist.

The loyal friend.

The woman everyone admired.

All they saw now was someone who had hidden a secret for twenty years.

“Say something,” I whispered.

She looked at me.

“I can explain.””

I almost smiled.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was exactly what everyone said when the truth finally caught them.

Explain.

A small word for a lifetime of lies.

“You told me my husband was dead.””

Margaret swallowed.

“Yes.””

“And he wasn’t.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“No.””

The room erupted.

Questions.

Whispers.

Accusations.

But I heard only one thing.

The sound of my own heart breaking again.

“Why?””

Margaret stepped closer.

“Because Daniel asked me to.””

That answer stunned me.

“What?””

She looked around.

“He made me promise.””

I stared at her.

“My husband asked you to lie to me?””

“Yes.””

The anger I felt was almost easier than the pain.

“So he was alive and chose not to come home?””

Margaret’s face changed.

“No.””

Her answer came immediately.

“No, Evelyn. It wasn’t like that.””

“Then tell me what it was like.””

She looked at Lily.

Then at Thomas.

Then back at me.

“Daniel was trying to protect Clara.””

I shook my head.

“From who?””

Nobody answered.

And that silence was becoming unbearable.

“From who?””

My voice echoed.

Thomas stepped forward.

“From the person who controlled everything.””

I turned toward him.

“You keep saying that.””

I walked closer.

“You keep talking about some invisible enemy.””

My eyes moved between them.

“But someone always knew.””

My voice broke.

“Someone always had the information.””

I looked at Margaret.

“You.””

Then Thomas.

“You.””

I pointed toward the ballroom.

“Everyone except me.””

Thomas lowered his head.

I looked back at Margaret.

“What happened the night Clara disappeared?””

Margaret closed her eyes.

When she opened them again, the woman I knew seemed gone.

Only someone exhausted remained.

“That night, Daniel discovered something.””

“What?””

“He discovered that Clara’s investigation was bigger than the foundation.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Margaret looked toward the dark stage.

“Your family was connected to something much older.””

I felt a chill.

“My family?””

“Yes.””

“Daniel’s family?””

She nodded.

“The Carter name carried influence long before your foundation existed.””

I shook my head.

“That doesn’t explain anything.””

“It does when you understand what people will do to protect power.””

The words settled heavily.

Lily stepped forward.

“My mother found out about this?””

“Yes.””

“And she ran?””

Margaret looked at her.

“No.””

Her voice softened.

“Your mother fought.””

Lily looked away.

For the first time, I saw something familiar in her expression.

Clara.

That stubborn strength.

That refusal to give up.

“What happened after Daniel disappeared?”” I asked.

Margaret took a breath.

“He went into hiding.””

“With Clara?””

“No.””

The answer came quickly.

“Then where?””

Margaret looked at Thomas.

Thomas nodded.

“Tell her.””

Margaret looked back at me.

“Daniel was searching for Clara.””

My heart tightened.

“Alone?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t he come back?””

Her eyes filled.

“Because he found her.””

I froze.

“What?””

Thomas looked at me.

“Daniel found Clara.””

The world stopped.

“He found her?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Months after she disappeared.””

I grabbed the back of a chair.

“And he still didn’t tell me?””

Margaret looked devastated.

“He wanted to.””

“But?””

“He learned the people who took Clara were still watching you.””

My anger faded into confusion.

“They were watching me?””

“Yes.””

Margaret nodded.

“Daniel believed that if they knew Clara was alive and that he had found her, they would come after you.””

I whispered:

“So he stayed away.””

“Yes.””

I looked down.

The pain was complicated now.

Because the husband I thought abandoned me…

May have been sacrificing himself.

But why?

Why did no one trust me enough to tell me?

“What happened to him?””

Nobody answered.

That scared me.

“What happened to Daniel?””

Thomas looked at Margaret.

Margaret looked away.

Then Thomas said:

“He disappeared again.””

My eyes widened.

“Again?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Five years after Clara vanished.””

My breathing slowed.

“Was he alive then?””

Thomas hesitated.

“Yes.””

The answer broke something inside me.

Five more years.

Five years when I believed I had lost everything.

Five years when he was somewhere in the world.

“Did he ever try to contact me?””

Margaret started crying.

“Yes.””

My heart stopped.

“When?””

“Every year.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

“He wrote letters.””

My face went numb.

“Letters?””

Margaret nodded.

“I kept them.””

The room went silent.

“You kept them?””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

She looked down.

“At home.””

I stepped toward her.

“Why?””

Her tears fell.

“Because Daniel told me not to send them unless Clara was safe.””

I felt a wave of anger.

“Do you understand what you did?””

Margaret cried.

“I do.””

“No.””

My voice became quiet.

“You don’t.””

I looked at her.

“You took twenty years of my life.””

She didn’t defend herself.

And somehow that hurt more.

Lily suddenly spoke.

“Where are the letters?””

Everyone looked at her.

Her voice was steady.

“If my grandfather wrote them, we need to read them.””

Margaret looked at her.

“You have his eyes.””

The words made Lily freeze.

“What?””

Margaret touched her face.

“Daniel had the same look when he was angry.””

A painful silence followed.

Then Margaret reached into her purse.

She pulled out a small key.

“I brought this tonight because I knew this day would come.””

Thomas frowned.

“What is it?””

“A safety deposit box.””

My heart raced.

“What’s inside?””

Margaret looked at me.

“Everything Daniel wanted you to know.””

She placed the key in my hand.

The metal felt cold.

Heavy.

Like it carried years of secrets.

I looked at it.

Then at her.

“Why tonight?””

Margaret’s face changed.

“Because I received a message this morning.””

“What message?””

She pulled out her phone.

Her hands shook as she showed me the screen.

A single sentence.

*She knows the truth now. Finish what Daniel started.*

My stomach dropped.

“Who sent this?””

Margaret looked terrified.

“I don’t know.””

Thomas immediately took the phone.

His expression changed.

“Evelyn…”

“What?””

He looked at the message again.

Then at the screen.

“This number…”

“What about it?””

His face became pale.

“I’ve seen it before.””

“Where?””

Thomas slowly looked toward Lily.

“On the night Clara disappeared.””

Before anyone could react, another phone began ringing.

Everyone froze.

It was not Lily’s.

Not Margaret’s.

Not Thomas’s.

It was mine.

My hands trembled as I looked at the screen.

Because the caller ID showed a name I had not seen in forty years.

May you like

A name that should have been impossible.

*Daniel Carter.*
