Amused

Chapter 6: The Man Behind the Money

The name Daniel Hayes changed everything.

My father had believed Caroline's previous marriage had ended peacefully.

She had told him that her first husband was irresponsible, emotionally distant, and unwilling to support their children.

She had said she left him because she wanted a better life for Olivia and Lucas.

Now James was telling him that money from Emma's trust had been transferred into an account belonging to that same man.

At breakfast the next morning, my father looked as though he hadn't slept.

I was wearing my new blue dress.

I had carefully brushed my hair and placed my mother's locket around my neck.

Margaret smiled when she saw me.

"Look at you!""

I turned around.

"Do you like it?""

"I love it. Your mother would have loved it, too.""

My father smiled faintly.

Then his phone rang.

"Good morning, James.""

He listened.

His expression became serious.

"You're sure?""

Another pause.

"All right. Send me the documents.""

He ended the call.

Margaret looked at him.

"Daniel?""

My father nodded.

"Apparently, Caroline's former husband has been receiving transfers from the account connected to Emma's trust.""

Margaret shook her head.

"That makes no sense.""

"James is trying to establish why.""

I sat quietly.

I knew Daniel's name.

Caroline had mentioned him once when Olivia was angry about something.

She had said he was a useless man who never cared about his children.

I didn't understand why he would have money from my account.

"Is Daniel coming here?"" I asked.

My father looked at me.

"No, sweetheart.""

"Does he know me?""

My father hesitated.

"I don't know.""

Margaret reached over and took my hand.

"Don't worry about the adults' problems. You're going to have a normal day today.""

I nodded.

But our day was interrupted less than an hour later.

A black car pulled into the driveway.

A man stepped out.

He was in his forties, with dark hair and a neatly pressed gray jacket.

Caroline opened the front door before he could knock.

"What are you doing here?""

The man looked past her.

"I need to speak to Richard.""

"Now isn't a good time.""

"I know he's home.""

My father appeared behind her.

"Daniel?""

The man nodded.

"Richard.""

Caroline immediately moved into the hallway.

"You can't come in.""

Daniel looked at her.

"I didn't come here to see you.""

My father stepped aside.

"Come in.""

Daniel entered the living room.

His eyes briefly settled on me.

Then he looked at the shopping bags near the sofa.

"Is this Emma?""

My father nodded.

"Yes.""

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

"Hello, Emma.""

I didn't answer.

I moved closer to Margaret.

My father gestured toward a chair.

"Why are you here?""

Daniel sat down.

"Because I received a phone call from my bank yesterday. They flagged a transfer that came from an account I didn't recognize.""

My father folded his arms.

"An account belonging to a company Caroline controls?""

Daniel nodded.

"Yes.""

Caroline interrupted.

"Daniel, don't start.""

He ignored her.

"I was told the transfer was connected to an inheritance account belonging to Emma.""

My father looked at him.

"And you accepted the money?""

Daniel shook his head.

"I didn't know where it came from.""

Caroline laughed.

"That's convenient.""

Daniel turned toward her.

"You told me it was money you had saved.""

Caroline's face hardened.

"Keep your voice down.""

He looked back at my father.

"Richard, I want to be clear. I didn't request any money from your daughter. Caroline told me she was settling an old financial matter between us.""

My father asked:

"How much did she transfer?""

Daniel named the amount.

James had already given my father the figure.

But hearing it confirmed by the recipient made the situation worse.

"Why did you keep it?"" my father asked.

Daniel looked down.

"I didn't. I contacted the bank as soon as they questioned it. The funds are frozen pending investigation.""

Caroline stood.

"This is a private matter between me and my former husband.""

My father turned toward her.

"Then explain why my daughter's money was sent to him.""

She looked at Daniel.

He shook his head.

"Don't look at me. You made the transfer.""

Caroline's voice became sharp.

"You owe me money.""

Daniel frowned.

"For what?""

"For raising your children.""

"I paid child support.""

"Not enough.""

Daniel leaned forward.

"You told me you didn't want anything from me. You said you had a new husband who could provide.""

My father looked at Caroline.

She remained silent.

Daniel continued.

"Richard, I don't know what Caroline told you about our marriage, but I never abandoned Olivia and Lucas. I paid support every month. I also paid for their school expenses.""

Caroline's expression became furious.

"Stop talking.""

Daniel ignored her.

"I tried to maintain contact, but she kept changing arrangements. Eventually, I was told the children didn't want to see me.""

My father looked stunned.

"Are you saying you were prevented from seeing them?""

Daniel nodded.

"Yes.""

Caroline stepped toward him.

"You are not going to rewrite history in front of these people.""

My father raised his hand.

"Enough. Sit down.""

She refused.

Instead, she turned toward me.

"Emma, go upstairs.""

My father looked at her.

"Don't give her orders.""

Caroline's eyes narrowed.

"You're allowing this man to come into our home and accuse me of everything imaginable.""

Daniel opened his briefcase.

"I brought something.""

He placed a folder on the table.

Inside were copies of bank transfers, child support receipts, and several letters.

"These are the payments I made for Olivia and Lucas over the years," he said.

"I also brought the messages where Caroline asked me to send money directly to her.""

My father picked up the first document.

Then another.

Then another.

The dates went back several years.

Caroline's face became increasingly tense.

Daniel pointed to one particular transfer.

"This was made two months before your wedding.""

My father looked at him.

"What is it?""

"A payment Caroline requested to cover a financial emergency.""

"How much?""

Daniel told him.

My father frowned.

"Why?""

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

"She said she was facing legal expenses because of a dispute involving her previous business.""

Caroline interrupted.

"That's none of your business.""

Daniel turned toward her.

"It became my business when you used the same story to request another payment after marrying Richard.""

My father slowly lowered the paper.

"Another payment?""

Daniel nodded.

"She said she needed money to settle a debt before you discovered it.""

The room went quiet.

My father looked at Caroline.

"Did you have debts before we married?""

Caroline crossed her arms.

"Everyone has financial obligations.""

"Did you tell me?""

"I didn't think it was relevant.""

James, who had arrived moments earlier, opened his laptop.

"Richard, we have some preliminary findings.""

My father turned.

"What?""

"The company Caroline established before your marriage appears to have been involved in several transactions that require further investigation.""

Caroline's face went pale.

James continued.

"Some of the payments were made before the marriage. Others were made afterward. We also found correspondence suggesting that certain household expenses were deliberately classified under Emma's trust.""

My father looked at Caroline.

"Why?""

She shook her head.

"I don't know.""

James turned his laptop toward him.

"There's another issue.""

On the screen was a scanned document.

A property agreement.

My father read it carefully.

Then he looked up.

"Why is my house listed as collateral?""

Caroline froze.

Daniel looked away.

James spoke slowly.

"The agreement appears to have been prepared several months before the wedding. It concerns a loan taken out by a company associated with Caroline.""

My father stared at the document.

"Did I sign this?""

James shook his head.

"No.""

"Then how is my property listed?""

"That's what we're investigating.""

Caroline suddenly started crying.

"Richard, please. I can explain.""

My father didn't move.

"Then explain.""

She stepped toward him.

"I was under pressure. I had debts. Daniel wasn't helping me. I thought once we were married, everything would become easier.""

My father looked at her.

"So you married me because of money?""

"No!""

"Did you know about my business assets before we met?""

She hesitated.

That hesitation was enough.

My father closed the folder.

"Answer me.""

Caroline wiped her cheeks.

"I knew you were successful.""

"Did you know about the estate?""

She looked down.

"I knew Elizabeth had left Emma money.""

My father went completely still.

"How?""

Caroline didn't answer.

Margaret spoke from the sofa.

"Because you asked about it.""

Everyone turned toward her.

Caroline's face drained of color.

Margaret continued.

"Before the wedding, you contacted someone who worked with Elizabeth's estate. You wanted to know how much money Emma would inherit.""

My father stared at Caroline.

"Is that true?""

She shook her head.

"She's lying.""

Margaret reached into her handbag.

"I kept the correspondence.""

She removed several printed emails.

Caroline looked at them.

Then she covered her mouth.

My father took the pages.

The first email was dated four months before the wedding.

The subject line read:

*Elizabeth Morgan Estate — Beneficiary Information.*

My father read the sender's name.

Caroline.

He turned the page.

There was another message.

And another.

In one of them, Caroline had asked whether the trust could be accessed by Emma's legal guardian.

In another, she had asked whether the guardian could authorize certain investments.

My father looked at her.

"You knew about the trust before we married.""

Caroline began crying harder.

"I was trying to understand the family finances.""

"You were trying to understand how to access my daughter's inheritance.""

"That's not true!""

James calmly gathered the documents.

"Mrs. Hayes, these emails are relevant to the financial investigation. I recommend you refrain from making further statements until you've spoken to your own attorney.""

Caroline turned toward my father.

"You're going to throw me out over this?""

He looked exhausted.

"I don't know what I'm going to do about our marriage.""

She reached for his arm.

"But you can't separate me from my children.""

My father looked at Olivia and Lucas, who had appeared at the top of the stairs.

They had been listening.

Olivia was wearing her pink designer dress.

Lucas held his phone.

Neither of them spoke.

My father took a breath.

"Your children are not responsible for what you've done.""

Caroline looked relieved.

Then he added:

"But Emma will not be placed in your care again without proper safeguards.""

Her expression collapsed.

I looked at my father.

"Daddy?""

He turned toward me.

"Yes, sweetheart?""

"Did Mommy know Caroline was going to do this?""

He crouched in front of me.

"I don't think she knew exactly what would happen. But she was worried, and she tried to protect you.""

I touched the locket around my neck.

"She did?""

He nodded.

"She did.""

For a moment, the room was quiet.

Then Olivia came downstairs.

She stopped in front of me.

Her eyes were red.

"Emma?""

I looked up.

She glanced at the blue dress I was wearing.

Then at the documents on the table.

"Did you tell them I was stealing your clothes?""

I shook my head.

"No.""

"Then why is everyone angry?""

I didn't know how to answer.

Lucas stepped forward.

"Mom said you were trying to get us kicked out.""

My father immediately interrupted.

"Lucas, nobody is asking you to leave because of Emma.""

Caroline looked at her children.

"Come upstairs. Both of you.""

But Olivia didn't move.

She stared at the blue dress.

Then she whispered:

"Mom told me Emma didn't deserve new clothes because she wasn't really part of our family.""

My father closed his eyes.

Olivia continued.

"She said if Emma had nice things, she'd become spoiled.""

Caroline snapped.

"Olivia, stop talking!""

But Olivia was crying now.

"I didn't know the money was hers.""

My father looked at her.

"Did your mother tell you where the money for your clothes came from?""

Olivia shook her head.

"She said Daddy paid for everything.""

Lucas looked down at his phone.

Then he suddenly spoke.

"Mom, what about the video?""

Caroline turned sharply.

"What video?""

Lucas swallowed.

"The one from the day you gave Emma the garbage bags.""

My father looked at him.

"What video?""

Lucas glanced at Caroline.

She shook her head.

"Lucas, don't.""

He slowly took out his phone.

"I still have it.""

My father held out his hand.

"May I see?""

Lucas hesitated.

Then he unlocked the phone.

He opened a video.

The screen showed me standing in the hallway, surrounded by the three black garbage bags.

My voice was small.

"Please, can I have something that fits?""

Then Caroline's voice came through the recording.

"Your father already spends enough money on you. You should be grateful we even feed you!""

The video continued.

It showed Lucas laughing.

It showed Olivia standing on the stairs.

It showed Caroline throwing a stained sweater toward me.

Then, just before the recording ended, another voice could be heard.

Caroline's voice.

She was speaking to someone on the phone.

And the words made my father go completely still.

"Once Richard signs the guardianship papers, the trust will be under my control. Then I won't have to pretend this child matters anymore.""

My father slowly looked up.

"Lucas, when was this recorded?""

Lucas whispered:

"Three months ago.""

James took the phone carefully.

"Richard, I think we need to preserve this immediately.""

Caroline stood frozen.

My father looked at her.

And for the first time, he no longer looked like a husband trying to save his marriage.

He looked like a father who had finally understood the danger his daughter had been living in.

"Caroline," he said quietly, "what guardianship papers are you talking about?""

She opened her mouth.

But before she could answer, James's phone rang.

He checked the screen.

Then his expression changed.

"Richard, it's the estate office.""

My father took the call.

"Hello?""

He listened.

Then he slowly sat down.

"What do you mean Elizabeth's original guardianship instructions were changed?""

James stepped closer.

My father looked at Caroline.

"Who submitted the replacement document?""

A long silence followed.

Then he answered:

"Send me a copy immediately.""

He ended the call.

His face had become completely white.

I reached for his hand.

"Daddy?""

He looked down at me.

Then he whispered something I couldn't understand.

"Emma, I think someone tried to change who would inherit your mother's estate before she even died.""

And when James opened the document that arrived moments later, the name at the bottom wasn't Caroline's.

May you like

It was my father's.

But he swore he had never signed it.
