Chapter 8: The Woman at the Door

When I arrived home, Daniel was standing in my driveway.

And beside him was another person.

A woman.

Emily.

No.

Not Emily.

A different woman.

She looked older.

Confident.

Expensive clothes.

A smile that didn’t reach her eyes.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Sarah, we need to talk.””

I stayed near the car.

“No.””

His expression changed.

“Sarah.””

“You don’t get to show up here with someone after hiding things from me and demand a conversation.””

The woman beside him crossed her arms.

“I can explain.””

I looked at her.

“Who are you?””

She smiled slightly.

“My name is Rachel.””

I waited.

Nothing.

So I asked:

“And?””

Her smile faded.

“I’m Daniel’s business partner.””

I laughed.

A short, shocked laugh.

“Business partner?””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“Sarah, listen—”

“No.””

I pointed at him.

“I’m done listening to explanations that only happen after you get caught.””

My father stepped onto the porch.

“Why are they here?””

Daniel looked at him.

“This doesn’t involve you.””

My father walked down the steps.

“You made it involve me when my granddaughter called me crying.””

Rachel stepped forward.

“Mr. Harris, nobody wants a fight.””

My father looked at her.

“Then nobody should have started one.””

Daniel clenched his fists.

“Sarah, you’re making a mistake.””

I looked at him.

“A mistake?””

“Yes.””

He lowered his voice.

“You’re believing strangers over your husband.””

I stared at him.

“You stopped being my husband when you made me your cover.””

His face changed.

Rachel looked at Daniel.

“You didn’t tell her?””

That sentence made everything stop.

I turned slowly.

“Tell me what?””

Daniel said nothing.

Rachel sighed.

“Daniel.””

“Stop.””

“No.””

She looked at me.

“Your husband wasn’t just hiding debt.””

My heartbeat increased.

“What else?””

Rachel hesitated.

Then said:

“He was preparing to leave.””

I felt numb.

“What?””

“He opened another account six months ago.””

Daniel looked angry.

“Rachel, enough.””

But she continued.

“He was moving money.””

My father stepped forward.

“How much?””

Rachel looked at him.

“Almost two hundred thousand dollars.””

The world became quiet.

I looked at Daniel.

“Is that true?””

He didn’t answer.

And that was enough.

I felt something break inside me.

Not my heart.

Something stronger.

My trust.

“Why?””

The question came out softly.

Daniel looked at me.

“Because I was tired.””

I blinked.

“Tired?””

“Yes.””

He looked frustrated.

“I felt trapped.””

I stared at him.

“You felt trapped?””

I pointed toward the house.

“At the home I built?””

Silence.

“With the daughter I raised?””

Nothing.

“With the wife who stood beside you when nobody else did?””

Daniel looked away.

That hurt more than anger.

Because it meant he knew.

He knew what he was doing.

My father walked toward him.

“You have ten seconds to leave my daughter’s property.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Sarah, don’t do this.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

My voice steadied.

“You already did.””

That night, I called an attorney.

Not because I wanted revenge.

Because I needed protection.

The next morning, I opened my email.

There was one new message.

From Daniel.

Subject line:

*The truth about Lily.*

My hands trembled.

I opened it.

May you like

The first sentence made my blood run cold.

*Sarah, there is something about Lily you don’t know.*
