Chapter 7: The Secret Before Me
I stared at the photo until my eyes started hurting.
Daniel was standing outside a restaurant.
Smiling.
Not the forced smile I had seen recently.
A real one.
The kind I hadn’t seen in years.
Emily stood beside him.
Her hand rested on his arm.
They looked comfortable.
Too comfortable.
I zoomed in on the date.
Three months before our wedding.
My fingers went cold.
“Mom?””
I quickly locked my phone.
Lily stood in the doorway wearing her pajamas.
“You okay?””
I forced a smile.
“Yeah, sweetheart.””
She walked closer.
“Are you sad?””
Children always know.
They don’t know the reason.
They don’t know the details.
But they know.
I sat down and opened my arms.
She climbed onto my lap.
“Is Daddy coming back?””
The question hurt more than anything else.
I brushed her hair away from her face.
“I don’t know.””
She looked down.
“Did I make him leave?””
My heart broke.
“No.””
I held her tighter.
“You didn’t do anything.””
“But he got mad because I called Grandpa.””
I lifted her chin.
“Lily, listen to me.””
She looked at me.
“You never have to stay quiet when you’re scared.””
She nodded slowly.
“But Daddy is still my daddy.””
The honesty in that sentence almost destroyed me.
Because even after everything, she still loved him.
That afternoon, I met the person who sent the photo.
Her name was Emily Carter.
She chose a small coffee shop on the edge of town.
When I arrived, she was already sitting near the window.
She looked nervous.
Not guilty.
Nervous.
“Sarah?””
I nodded.
She stood.
“I’m sorry.””
Those were her first words.
Not hello.
Not nice to meet you.
I sat down.
“What is this?””
She looked at the photo.
“Something Daniel hoped you would never see.””
My stomach twisted.
“How long?””
She looked down.
“We dated before you.””
“I know.””
Her eyes lifted.
“You know?””
“Only because you sent me proof.””
Emily swallowed.
“I wasn’t trying to hurt you.””
“Then why?””
She took a deep breath.
“Because I found out what he did.””
“What he did?””
She pushed a folder across the table.
I didn’t touch it.
“What’s inside?””
“Documents.””
“About what?””
“Daniel’s business.””
I frowned.
“What does his business have to do with us?””
Emily’s expression changed.
“Everything.””
I opened the folder.
Inside were bank statements.
Emails.
Contracts.
My hands shook as I read.
Daniel had been hiding debt.
Not normal debt.
Thousands of dollars.
Money missing from accounts.
Payments made to companies I didn’t recognize.
Then I saw my name.
My stomach dropped.
There were documents with my signature.
Except I had never signed them.
“He used you,” Emily whispered.
I looked up.
“What?””
“He needed someone with good credit. Someone people trusted.””
I stared at the papers.
“No.””
Emily leaned forward.
“I know this is hard.””
“No.””
My voice became louder.
“Daniel wouldn’t do this.””
Emily looked sad.
“Sarah.””
She reached into her bag.
Then she placed another item on the table.
A wedding photo.
Mine.
Daniel’s.
And written on the back was a message.
A message in Daniel’s handwriting.
I recognized it instantly.
My breathing stopped.
Because the message wasn’t romantic.
It wasn’t a promise.
It was a plan.
*Once Sarah signs everything, I’ll finally be free.*
I dropped the photo.
“No.””
Emily whispered.
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at her.
“Why are you helping me?””
She looked away.
“Because I was you once.””
The room went silent.
Then my phone rang.
It was my father.
I answered.
“Dad?””
His voice sounded urgent.
“Sarah, where are you?””
“At a coffee shop.””
“Come home now.””
My heart jumped.
“What happened?””
A pause.
Then he said:
“Daniel came back.””
I stood.
“What?””
“And Sarah…”
May you like
His voice lowered.
“He didn’t come back alone.””
