Chapter 5: The Woman Who Was Supposed to Be Dead
The photograph shook slightly in Diane Foster’s hand.
Not because she was afraid.
Because the evidence in front of her had just changed the entire direction of the investigation.
For hours, everyone had been focused on one question.
What had happened to Emily?
Now another question stood in the middle of the basement.
What had happened to Sarah Carter?
Diane looked at the photograph again.
A woman stood beside a wooden fence behind the house.
The image was old.
The colors had faded.
But the face was clear.
Sarah.
Emily’s biological mother.
The woman everyone believed had died years ago.
“Mrs. Carter,” Diane called.
Lauren didn’t answer.
She remained at the top of the stairs, one hand gripping the railing.
Her expression was empty.
Almost disconnected.
“Mrs. Carter,” Diane repeated, louder this time.
“Who is this?””
Lauren stared at the photograph.
Then slowly looked away.
“I don’t know.””
The answer was so weak that even Lauren seemed to know nobody believed it.
Officer Reynolds stepped forward.
“You don’t know your husband’s first wife?””
Lauren’s eyes flashed.
“That’s not what I meant.””
“Then explain.””
“There are things you don’t understand.””
Diane walked up the stairs, still holding the photograph.
“Then help us understand.””
Lauren looked at Emily.
The little girl was standing in the hallway, watching everything.
The moment Lauren’s eyes met hers, Emily stepped back.
That reaction said more than any statement.
Diane noticed.
“Emily, can you go with Ms. Green for a moment?””
Emily nodded immediately.
She didn’t look at Lauren again.
When the child disappeared into another room, Diane turned back.
“Now we can talk.””
Lauren crossed her arms.
“You’re making assumptions.””
“No. I’m asking questions.””
“You’re treating me like a criminal.””
“I’m investigating why a child has injuries, why she describes fear inside this home, and why we found evidence connected to a woman who was supposedly dead.””
Lauren looked toward the basement.
“You don’t know what you found.””
“Then tell me.””
Silence.
A long one.
Finally, Lauren spoke.
“Sarah was unstable.””
Diane waited.
“She had problems.””
“What kind of problems?””
“She wasn’t a good mother.””
“That doesn’t answer the question.””
Lauren’s voice became colder.
“She was obsessed. She believed everyone was against her.””
Diane studied her.
“Convenient.””
Lauren’s eyes narrowed.
“What does that mean?””
“It means dead people can’t defend themselves.””
The words landed hard.
Lauren looked away.
“You think I killed her.””
Diane did not answer.
And that was answer enough.
“I didn’t kill Sarah.””
“Then how did she die?””
“She disappeared.””
Diane frowned.
“That’s different from what Emily was told.””
Lauren’s face tightened.
“Emily was young.””
“What was she told?””
“That her mother left.””
“And later?””
“Later she was told Sarah died.””
“Who told her?””
Lauren hesitated.
“Mark.””
“Your husband.””
“Yes.””
Diane glanced toward the basement.
“Where is Mark right now?””
Lauren picked up her phone.
“He’s coming.””
“Did he know we found the basement?””
Lauren said nothing.
Diane looked at her.
“That’s what I thought.””
Outside, a car pulled into the driveway.
Everyone turned.
A few moments later, the front door opened.
Mark Carter walked inside.
He looked different from the man in the family photographs.
The confident smile was gone.
The relaxed posture was gone.
He looked like someone who had spent the entire drive home trying to prepare for a disaster.
“Where is Emily?”” he asked immediately.
Diane stepped forward.
“She’s safe.””
Mark’s eyes moved around the room.
Then stopped on Lauren.
“What did you tell them?””
Lauren’s face changed.
“What did I tell them?””
“You know what I mean.””
Diane noticed the exchange.
“You two need to explain something.””
Mark looked at her.
“I don’t know what Lauren has said.””
Lauren stared at him.
“Really?””
For the first time, anger appeared.
“You’re going to do this now?””
“Do what?””
“Pretend you had nothing to do with it.””
Mark’s face went pale.
Diane stepped between them.
“Let’s focus. We found documents and a recording in your basement.””
Mark stopped.
“What recording?””
Diane watched his reaction carefully.
“You don’t know?””
A pause.
“No.””
It was believable.
Maybe.
But then Mark made a mistake.
He looked toward the basement door.
Not surprised.
Not confused.
Afraid.
Diane saw it.
“You knew something was down there.””
Mark looked away.
“I knew there were old things.””
“Like what?””
“I don’t know.””
“Then why are you afraid?””
Mark didn’t answer.
Lauren laughed quietly.
A bitter sound.
“You always said you would protect me.””
Mark looked at her.
“Lauren, stop.””
“No. Tell them.””
“Stop.””
“You told me nobody would ever find out.””
Diane’s attention sharpened.
“Find out what?””
Mark closed his eyes.
For a moment, he looked exhausted.
Not guilty.
Not innocent.
Just tired.
“Sarah wasn’t supposed to be in our lives anymore.””
Diane frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Mark sat down.
His hands shook slightly.
“She left.””
“Left where?””
“I don’t know.””
“But you told Emily she died.””
Mark looked at the floor.
“I thought it would be easier.””
Diane’s expression hardened.
“Easier for who?””
No answer.
The silence was broken by a small voice.
“Daddy?””
Everyone turned.
Emily stood at the doorway.
Mark immediately stood.
“Emily.””
The little girl stared at him.
“Did Mommy really leave me?””
Mark’s face collapsed.
A question from a child.
A question he had avoided for years.
“Sweetheart…”
“No.””
Emily shook her head.
“I want the truth.””
Nobody moved.
Because everyone understood.
This was the moment Emily had been waiting for.
Not revenge.
Not punishment.
Just the truth.
Mark took a step forward.
But Emily stepped back.
The movement hurt him more than anything else.
“Emily,” he whispered.
“Did she leave because of me?””
“No.””
The answer came instantly.
Mark’s eyes filled.
“No, Emily. Never.””
“Then why did you say she did?””
Mark looked at Lauren.
And Lauren looked away.
Diane noticed.
“Mr. Carter.””
Mark swallowed.
“I made a mistake.””
Emily’s face changed.
“What mistake?””
Another silence.
Then Mark said:
“I believed the wrong person.””
Lauren’s expression hardened.
“Mark.””
He ignored her.
“I thought I was protecting my family.””
Emily whispered:
“From who?””
Mark looked at her.
Then at Lauren.
And finally, he said the words that changed everything.
“From your stepmother.””
Lauren went completely still.
Diane immediately focused on her.
“Mrs. Carter?””
But Lauren was no longer looking at Diane.
She was staring at Mark.
“You promised.””
Mark’s voice cracked.
“I promised because I was scared.””
“Scared of what?””
Mark didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
Because Diane already knew.
There was something bigger.
Something beyond the bruises.
Beyond the kennel.
Beyond the locked rooms.
A secret that involved Sarah.
A secret Mark had spent years burying.
Then Officer Reynolds returned from the basement holding another file.
“Diane.””
She turned.
“What is it?””
He handed her a document.
“It was hidden inside the wall.””
Diane opened it.
The first line made her heart stop.
*POLICE REPORT — MISSING PERSON: SARAH CARTER*
But beneath the original report was another page.
A handwritten note.
Three words.
Written in Sarah’s handwriting.
*“I am alive.””*
Diane slowly looked up.
And for the first time that night, nobody had an answer.
Because if Sarah Carter was alive…
May you like
then where had she been all these years?
And why had she been hiding?
