Chapter 9: The Voice Hidden for Sixteen Years
My grandmother stood at the end of the hallway holding the second recording.
For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.
I had spent years believing she was the person who loved my mother the most after my father.
She was the woman who held my hand at the funeral.
The woman who told me my mother would always be watching over me.
The woman who cried harder than anyone else.
But now she was standing in the dark hallway of my house, holding evidence my mother had hidden.
And she looked like someone who had been waiting for this moment.
“Grandma?””
My voice came out small.
Her expression changed when she heard me.
Not guilt.
Not surprise.
Sadness.
“Maya…”
My father immediately stepped in front of me.
“Why are you here?””
My grandmother looked at him.
“Because you were never supposed to find this.””
Daniel stared at her.
“You knew.””
She looked at him.
“Yes.””
The answer was simple.
Too simple.
My father’s face hardened.
“You knew about the recording?””
She nodded.
“I knew about everything.””
The hallway seemed to shrink.
Everything.
That word was too big.
“What does that mean?”” my father asked.
My grandmother looked down at the recording in her hand.
“It means your wife was not the only person keeping secrets.””
My heart sank.
My father stepped closer.
“What did you do?””
She looked at him.
“I tried to protect my daughter.””
My father froze.
“Your daughter?””
“My daughter was Maya’s mother.””
The sentence made me feel like the ground moved beneath my feet.
My grandmother’s eyes filled with tears.
“I spent sixteen years watching everyone blame the wrong people.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You knew the truth.””
“Yes.””
“And you said nothing.””
She closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
My father looked devastated.
“Why?””
My grandmother looked at me.
And that was when I realized something.
She wasn’t looking at me like a child.
She was looking at me like someone she had failed.
“Because I was afraid.””
The words echoed.
Everyone was afraid.
Everyone had an excuse.
Everyone had a reason to hide.
But I was the one who had lived with the consequences.
My father’s voice was cold.
“Afraid of what?””
My grandmother looked at the recording.
“Of what would happen if the truth came out.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“The truth about what?””
She looked at him.
“You already know.””
“No.””
Daniel shook his head.
“I know pieces.””
My grandmother’s eyes moved between all of us.
“Then it’s time you knew everything.””
Nobody spoke.
She walked slowly toward us.
My father didn’t move.
Not because he trusted her.
Because he wanted answers.
She stopped a few feet away.
“Your wife did not cause the crash.””
The sentence surprised me.
After everything.
After Nicole’s lies.
After the evidence.
I thought I understood the story.
But apparently I didn’t.
My father frowned.
“Then what happened?””
My grandmother looked at him.
“Your wife caused the situation that led to it.””
The distinction felt terrifying.
Nicole, who had been standing behind us, whispered:
“I told you.””
Everyone turned.
She looked exhausted.
Broken.
But my grandmother looked at her with something stronger than anger.
Disappointment.
“You still don’t understand what you did.””
Nicole’s eyes filled with tears.
“I didn’t kill her.””
My grandmother nodded slowly.
“No.””
The room became quiet.
“You didn’t.””
Nicole looked almost relieved.
Then my grandmother continued.
“But you helped create the danger.””
The relief disappeared.
My father looked between them.
“What are you talking about?””
My grandmother took a deep breath.
“Your wife discovered Nicole’s financial crimes. She also discovered that Nicole had someone helping her.””
My father looked at Nicole.
“Who?””
My grandmother’s eyes moved toward him.
“Someone you trusted.””
Nobody spoke.
The words felt familiar.
My mother’s letter.
The warning.
*Look at the person who has always told you the truth.*
My father’s face changed.
“What are you saying?””
My grandmother looked down.
“I’m saying your wife found out someone inside your own family was involved.””
My eyes moved around the hallway.
My father.
Nicole.
Daniel.
My grandmother.
Everyone had been hiding something.
Everyone except me.
My father’s voice shook.
“Who?””
My grandmother didn’t answer.
Instead, she looked at the recording.
“She recorded everything before she died.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Then play it.””
My grandmother tightened her grip.
“No.””
My father’s expression changed.
“No?””
She looked at him.
“Because once you hear it, there is no going back.””
My father laughed bitterly.
“Do you think we can go back?””
He pointed downstairs.
“My daughter was attacked tonight.””
He looked at Nicole.
“My wife lied to me for years.””
Then he looked at my grandmother.
“And now I find out you knew the truth about my first wife’s death.””
His voice cracked.
“You don’t get to protect me anymore.””
The words hit her.
She looked down.
Slowly, she handed him the recording.
My father pressed the button.
At first, there was only static.
Then a sound.
A woman breathing.
My heart stopped.
I knew that voice.
Even after sixteen years.
Even after photographs faded.
Even after memories became blurry.
I knew.
“Hello, Maya.””
My knees almost gave out.
My mother.
Her voice.
Alive.
In the room.
My father covered his mouth.
Daniel looked away.
Even Nicole began crying.
The recording continued.
“If you are hearing this, then something happened that I was afraid of.””
A pause.
“I need you to understand something. I did not leave you. I did not choose to disappear.””
My tears fell before I even realized it.
My mother’s voice continued.
“I fought to come home.””
My father closed his eyes.
The pain on his face was unbearable.
“I found out who was behind everything.””
A pause.
“Not Nicole.””
Everyone looked at her.
Nicole froze.
My mother continued.
“She was part of it, but she was not the person controlling everything.””
My breathing became shallow.
“Someone else was using her.””
My father looked at Daniel.
Then my grandmother.
The recording continued.
“The person who helped Nicole knew our family. They knew our habits. They knew how to make Marcus trust them.””
My father looked sick.
Then my mother said:
“Marcus, I need you to hear this carefully.””
The recording crackled.
“Do not trust the person who has been closest to Maya since I died.””
My blood went cold.
The room became silent.
Because everyone understood.
Someone had been close to me.
Someone had helped raise me.
Someone who had been there since my mother died.
My mother’s voice continued.
“I’m sorry, Maya. I wanted to tell you myself.””
A pause.
“But I knew if I failed, the person responsible would try to control the story.””
My father whispered:
“No…”
The recording continued.
“The person who caused all of this is not Nicole.””
Everyone held their breath.
Then my mother said:
“It’s the person who convinced everyone Nicole was the only enemy.””
The recording stopped.
Static filled the room.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Then the device made one final sound.
A hidden second recording activated.
A different voice appeared.
A voice that made my father’s entire body freeze.
Because it was a voice we all recognized.
My grandmother’s voice.
Recorded sixteen years earlier.
And the first words we heard were:
“Your daughter will never know what really happened that night.””
My grandmother’s face went white.
My father slowly turned toward her.
“Mom…”
The hallway went silent.
The recording continued.
May you like
And then my grandmother said the words that shattered everything:
“Because if Maya finds out the truth, she’ll learn that her own father was never the person who saved her.””
