Chapter 1: The Moment Everything Broke
The sound of my stepmother’s hand hitting my face was the first thing my father heard when he walked into the kitchen.
For a second, nobody moved.
The glass of water in my hand trembled. A single drop slid down my fingers and fell onto the white tile floor. My cheek burned so badly that I couldn’t even feel the tears forming in my eyes.
But the pain wasn’t what froze me.
It was the look on Nicole’s face.
She wasn’t sorry.
She looked angry.
Like she believed she had every right to hurt me.
“Maya!”” my father shouted from the doorway.
His voice cracked through the kitchen like thunder.
Nicole’s expression changed instantly.
The rage disappeared.
The confidence disappeared.
And for the first time in months, I saw fear in her eyes.
“Marcus, wait—” she started.
My father stepped inside slowly, staring at her hand, then at my face.
“What did you just do?””
Nobody answered.
The refrigerator hummed behind us. The clock above the stove ticked loudly, almost mocking the silence.
Nicole quickly lowered her hand.
“She—she was being disrespectful,” Nicole said, pointing at me.
“She broke Lily’s tablet and then lied straight to my face about it.””
I looked at my father, desperate for him to understand.
“I didn’t break it,” I whispered.
Nicole immediately cut me off.
“See? She’s still lying.””
My father’s jaw tightened.
“Maya,” he said quietly, “tell me what happened.””
I swallowed, trying to keep my voice steady.
“I came home ten minutes ago. Lily was already crying. Nicole grabbed me and started accusing me before I even took my shoes off.””
“That’s not true,” Nicole snapped.
“It is,” I said.
My voice shook, but I forced myself to keep going.
“I was at the library after school. I have my receipt. I have the security cameras. I wasn’t even here when the tablet broke.””
Nicole laughed bitterly.
“Wow. Listen to her. She already has excuses prepared.””
I stared at her.
“Because I knew you wouldn’t believe me.””
That sentence landed harder than I expected.
My father looked between us.
Nicole crossed her arms.
“Marcus, you know how she is. She always acts innocent. She thinks because her mother isn’t here anymore, everyone has to feel sorry for her.””
My chest tightened.
My mother had been gone for six years.
Six years, and Nicole still found ways to use that wound against me.
My father’s face changed.
“Don’t bring her mother into this.””
Nicole looked away for a moment, but only for a moment.
Then she pointed toward the counter.
“Look at the tablet. It’s destroyed. Lily said Maya was the only one near it.””
I shook my head.
“Lily didn’t say that.””
Nicole’s eyes narrowed.
“She told me everything.””
“No,” I said.
“She didn’t.””
The kitchen became silent again.
Nicole stepped closer.
“You’re calling me a liar?””
I felt my heartbeat in my ears.
“I’m saying I didn’t do it.””
She stared at me with a coldness I had never seen before.
For years, I had tried to convince myself Nicole was just strict.
That she was stressed.
That maybe she was still adjusting to being a stepmother.
But standing there, with my cheek burning from her hand, I finally understood something.
Some people don’t become cruel because they lose control.
Some people become cruel because they think nobody will stop them.
“You always make everything harder,” Nicole whispered.
I frowned.
“What?””
“You heard me.””
My father stepped forward.
“Nicole.””
But she kept going.
“Ever since you came into this house, it’s been drama. Lily gets upset because of you. You argue about everything. You never appreciate what I do.””
I stared at her in disbelief.
“I’m seventeen. I go to school, I work part-time on weekends, and I stay out of your way. How am I causing problems?””
Her face hardened.
“There. That attitude.””
“What attitude?””
“The one where you think you’re better than everyone.””
I almost laughed because it was so impossible.
“You hit me because you think I broke a tablet.””
“I hit you because you refused to listen.””
My father’s eyes widened.
The kitchen went completely still.
Even Nicole seemed to realize what she had admitted.
“You hit her because she didn’t agree with you?”” Marcus asked.
Nicole’s mouth opened.
“That’s not what I meant.””
But it was too late.
My father had heard it.
I had heard it.
She had heard it.
The excuse was already gone.
Then footsteps echoed from the hallway.
Small, hesitant footsteps.
Everyone turned.
Lily stood at the entrance of the kitchen.
She was holding a stuffed rabbit against her chest.
Her face was pale.
“Mom…”
Nicole immediately changed her tone.
“Lily, sweetheart, go back upstairs.””
But Lily didn’t move.
For the first time, she didn’t listen to her mother.
“No.””
Nicole blinked.
“What did you say?””
Lily looked at my father.
Then at me.
Then back at Nicole.
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I need to tell the truth.””
My stomach dropped.
Nicole’s expression changed.
“Lily.””
It wasn’t a warning.
It was a threat.
My little sister looked scared, but she still stepped into the kitchen.
“Mom told me not to say anything.””
Marcus stared at her.
“Say anything about what?””
Lily squeezed her stuffed rabbit tighter.
“The tablet.””
Nicole moved quickly.
“Lily, you’re upset. You don’t know what you’re saying.””
But Lily shook her head.
“I do know.””
My father’s voice became softer.
“Lily, tell me what happened.””
She looked down at the floor.
Then she whispered:
“Maya didn’t break my tablet.””
Nicole froze.
The air disappeared from the room.
I looked at Lily, unable to speak.
My father slowly turned toward Nicole.
“What?””
Lily wiped her eyes.
“I broke it.””
Nicole’s face went completely white.
“No, Lily—”
“I dropped it,” Lily continued, her voice getting stronger.
“I was playing a game on the couch, and I dropped it on the floor. The screen cracked.””
My father stared at Nicole.
“Then why did you blame Maya?””
Nobody answered.
Nicole’s hands began shaking.
“She misunderstood—”
“No,” Lily said quietly.
Everyone looked at her.
“She told me to say Maya did it.””
The words hit harder than the slap.
Nicole took a step back.
“Lily, don’t lie.””
But Lily shook her head.
“You told me if I didn’t blame her, you would take away my phone and tell Dad I was the reason everyone was fighting.””
My father’s face changed.
Not anger.
Something worse.
Disappointment.
Deep, painful disappointment.
Nicole looked at him.
“Marcus, you’re not going to believe a child over your wife, are you?””
My father didn’t answer immediately.
He looked at my cheek.
Then at Lily.
Then at the broken tablet sitting on the counter.
And finally at Nicole.
The woman who had spent months telling him I was the problem.
The woman who had just been exposed by her own daughter.
“I need you to explain something to me,” he said quietly.
Nicole swallowed.
“What?””
My father stepped closer.
“Before I walked through that door…”
He looked at my bruised cheek.
“…how many times have you done this?””
Nicole’s face lost all color.
And then her phone, sitting on the kitchen counter, suddenly lit up.
A message appeared on the screen.
A message from someone named *“School Counselor”*.
My father glanced at it.
Then his eyes narrowed.
May you like
Because the preview showed only one sentence.
*“We need to discuss what Maya reported about what happens at home…”*
