Amused

Chapter 9: The Man Who Carried the Secret

Daniel didn’t move.

For several seconds, nobody did.

The paper shook slightly in my hand.

Not because I was afraid of him.

Because I was finally realizing something terrifying.

The truth had never been missing.

It had been hidden.

And every person in this room had been protecting a piece of it.

“Emma…”

Daniel’s voice was quiet.

Almost defeated.

I looked at him.

The same man who had stood beside Richard all night.

The same man who had carried the files.

The same man who seemed like the only person who knew how to control the chaos.

“You know my name.””

His eyes lowered.

“Yes.””

“How?””

Daniel looked at Richard.

That hurt more than anything.

Because I saw the answer before he spoke.

Richard didn’t know.

“Daniel,” Richard said slowly.

His voice was no longer angry.

It was confused.

“What is she talking about?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I was hoping she would never find out this way.””

My heart sank.

“You knew.””

He looked at me.

“Yes.””

The word landed softly.

But it destroyed everything.

“You knew who I was?””

“Yes.””

“You knew I was Richard’s granddaughter?””

“Yes.””

I laughed once.

A painful, empty sound.

“Of course you did.””

I stepped back.

“Everyone knew.””

“Emma—”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You don’t get to explain yet.””

The restaurant had become completely silent.

Even the customers who had been watching earlier were now frozen.

Because this was no longer a scene.

It was a family breaking apart.

I looked at Daniel.

“How long?””

He swallowed.

“Since before your mother died.””

My chest tightened.

“You knew my mother?””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

“How?””

He looked at the photograph.

“I worked for Richard for fifteen years.””

Richard stared at him.

“I don’t understand.””

Daniel looked at him sadly.

“That’s because I never told you everything.””

Richard’s expression hardened.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel took a breath.

“It means Claire came to me first.””

The room went still.

“My daughter came to you?””

Richard’s voice cracked.

Daniel nodded.

“She was afraid.””

“Of me?””

“No.””

Daniel looked down.

“She was afraid of what she discovered.””

I stepped closer.

“What did she discover?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then he reached into his briefcase.

He pulled out a small notebook.

Old.

Worn.

The edges were damaged.

“I kept this because I promised her.””

Richard stared.

“What is that?””

“Claire’s notes.””

My heart raced.

“My mother wrote that?””

Daniel nodded.

“She recorded everything she found.””

I reached for it.

But Daniel didn’t give it to me immediately.

“Emma.””

I looked at him.

“There are things in here that will hurt.””

I almost smiled.

“Hurt?””

My voice cracked.

“My entire life changed tonight.””

I held out my hand.

“I can handle the truth.””

Slowly, Daniel handed me the notebook.

The cover had one word written on it.

*Claire.*

My fingers trembled.

I opened the first page.

The handwriting was familiar.

My mother’s.

*If you are reading this, something went wrong.*

I stopped.

The next sentence made my heart race.

*I don’t know who I can trust anymore.*

I looked up.

Richard looked devastated.

Linda looked nervous.

Daniel looked away.

I continued reading.

*Richard believes he failed me. Thomas believes he failed me. But neither of them knows the whole truth.*

My breathing slowed.

Neither of them?

I kept reading.

*The person I trusted most was the person who betrayed me.*

I looked at Daniel.

He didn’t react.

That frightened me.

I turned the page.

*Daniel knows the truth.*

My hands froze.

Everyone saw it.

Richard stepped closer.

“What does it say?””

I didn’t answer.

I kept reading.

*I don’t blame Daniel. He was trapped too.*

I looked at him.

Confusion replaced my anger.

Trapped?

Daniel finally spoke.

“Claire found out someone was using company accounts to hide money.””

Richard nodded.

“We know that.””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You don’t.””

The room changed.

“What do you mean?””

Daniel looked at Richard.

“The money wasn’t being stolen.””

Everyone went quiet.

“It was being moved.””

Richard frowned.

“Moved where?””

Daniel’s face tightened.

“To cover something else.””

My stomach dropped.

“What something else?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Your father’s debt.””

The words felt impossible.

“My father?””

Richard looked shocked.

“Thomas?””

Daniel nodded.

“Thomas was desperate after Claire became sick.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“He didn’t steal from you.””

Daniel’s voice softened.

“But he borrowed money.””

“From who?””

Nobody answered.

Then Daniel said:

“People connected to your grandfather’s business.””

Richard’s face changed.

“What?””

Daniel continued.

“Thomas thought he could repay it.””

“Could he?””

“No.””

My chest tightened.

“What happened?””

Daniel looked at the notebook.

“Claire found out the people who loaned Thomas money were not legitimate investors.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What were they?””

Daniel looked at Richard.

“People who used threats.””

Nobody spoke.

My father.

My mother.

Their entire lives.

Destroyed by fear.

“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Because your mother wanted you protected.””

I shook my head.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

I held up the notebook.

“But she left clues.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Daniel looked sad.

“Because she knew the truth would eventually find you.””

I looked down again.

Another page caught my attention.

A sentence written near the bottom.

*If Emma ever meets Richard, she must hear this first: my father is not the enemy. But he must face what he allowed to happen.*

I looked at Richard.

He read my face.

“What?””

I handed him the notebook.

He read the line.

His expression collapsed.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel answered.

“Claire discovered that you unknowingly allowed the wrong people into your company.””

Richard stared.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“You’re saying I caused this?””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“I’m saying your trust was used against you.””

Richard looked away.

For the first time, he looked old.

Not powerful.

Not untouchable.

Just human.

Then Linda spoke.

Quietly.

“I knew.””

Everyone turned.

She looked at Richard.

“I knew about the money.””

Richard stared at her.

“You?””

She nodded.

“I knew someone was moving funds.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Linda’s eyes filled.

“Because I was afraid.””

Again.

That word.

“I thought if you found out, you would destroy Thomas.””

Richard’s voice was broken.

“I would have helped him.””

Linda shook her head.

“You don’t know that.””

The silence was painful.

Because maybe none of them knew.

Maybe everyone had made decisions based on fear.

And every decision had created another wound.

I looked at Daniel.

“But you knew everything.””

“Yes.””

“And you stayed quiet.””

His face tightened.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

He looked at the floor.

“Because Claire asked me to.””

I froze.

“What?””

“She made me promise.””

Daniel’s voice became softer.

“She said if Richard found out too early, he would go after the people responsible without thinking.””

Richard looked at him.

“And she didn’t trust me?””

Daniel looked at him sadly.

“She loved you.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“She didn’t trust your anger.””

The words hurt.

But Richard didn’t argue.

Because somewhere inside, he knew.

I looked at the notebook.

The final page was folded.

I opened it carefully.

Only one sentence was written there.

*Emma, when you finally learn the truth, find the place where I hid my last evidence.*

Underneath was an address.

My childhood home.

The house where I grew up.

The house my father sold after I left for college.

My heart started pounding.

“That house is gone.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

“What?””

“It was never sold.””

I looked at him.

“What are you talking about?””

Daniel reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a key.

An old brass key.

My mother’s initials were engraved on it.

I stared.

“How do you have that?””

Daniel looked at Richard.

Then at me.

“Because your father gave it to me before he disappeared.””

My blood ran cold.

“Disappeared?””

Daniel nodded.

“And before he left, he told me something.””

“What?””

Daniel looked directly into my eyes.

“He said if Emma ever found the truth…”

He paused.

“He said the person she needed to fear wasn’t Richard.””

My heartbeat thundered.

“Then who?””

Daniel’s face turned pale.

“Someone who has been watching her life from the beginning.””

A cold silence filled the room.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

From an unknown number.

I opened it.

One sentence.

No explanation.

No name.

Just words.

*Stop digging, Emma. Your mother ignored the warning. Look what happened to her.*

My hands shook.

Richard saw the message.

His expression changed instantly.

Because beneath the text was a photograph.

A recent photograph.

Of me.

Taken outside my apartment.

Today.

Richard looked at the screen.

Then toward the restaurant doors.

May you like

And whispered:

“They found you.””
