Amused

Chapter 5: The Man I Thought I Could Trust

For a few seconds, I couldn’t process what Linda had said.

The words didn’t make sense.

They floated in the air between us, impossible and cruel.

*Your grandfather threatened to take you away.*

I looked at Richard.

The man who had walked into the restaurant like a hero.

The man who had defended me.

The man who had touched my cheek and asked who hurt me.

My grandfather.

His face had gone completely still.

Not angry.

Not surprised.

Just… empty.

And somehow, that scared me more.

“Richard?””

My voice came out quietly.

He didn’t answer.

“Is that true?””

The entire restaurant seemed to disappear.

Richard looked at me.

And in that moment, I saw something I hadn’t seen before.

Regret.

Deep, painful regret.

“Emma…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Don’t do that.””

His eyebrows tightened.

“Do what?””

“Don’t say my name like that.””

My chest felt tight.

“Just answer me.””

Richard looked down.

That was all the answer I needed.

My stomach dropped.

“You threatened my father?””

“No.””

His response came quickly.

“I never threatened him.””

Linda laughed bitterly.

“Then tell her what happened.””

Richard turned toward her.

“Not here.””

“Why?””

Her voice rose.

“Because you’re afraid she’ll hear the truth?””

Several customers nearby looked over.

The restaurant was already filled with whispers, but now nobody was pretending not to listen.

Richard lowered his voice.

“Linda.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“You spent twenty years blaming me.””

Her eyes filled with anger.

“You told yourself I was the reason Claire left.””

Richard stared at her.

“Because you were.””

Linda flinched.

But she recovered quickly.

“You don’t get to rewrite history.””

I stood up.

“Stop.””

Both of them looked at me.

“I’m not a child.””

My voice shook.

“But everyone keeps talking around me like I’m not standing here.””

I pointed at the papers.

“My mother.””

I pointed at Richard.

“My grandfather.””

Then at Linda.

“You.””

My hands trembled.

“Everyone knows pieces of this story except me.””

I looked at Richard.

“So tell me.””

A painful silence.

“Did you threaten my father?””

Richard took a slow breath.

“No.””

I watched him carefully.

“But I did something almost as bad.””

My heart sank.

“What?””

He sat back down.

For the first time, he looked exhausted.

“I used my power.””

Nobody moved.

He continued.

“When Claire married Thomas, I didn’t approve.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

Richard looked away.

“Because I was arrogant.””

That answer surprised me.

He didn’t make excuses.

He didn’t blame anyone else.

“I had built my company from nothing,” he said.

“I believed success gave me the right to control everything around me.””

His fingers tightened.

“I thought I knew what was best for my daughter.””

I listened silently.

“When Claire told me she was pregnant, I was happy.””

His voice softened.

“But when she told me she wanted a quiet life with Thomas, away from my company and my expectations…”

He stopped.

“I reacted badly.””

“How badly?””

Richard looked at me.

“I told her that if she walked away from my family, she couldn’t expect my support.””

My heart hurt.

“But that’s not threatening to take me away.””

“No.””

He nodded.

“It wasn’t.””

“Then what happened?””

Richard looked at the floor.

“Thomas was struggling financially.””

I blinked.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

“He never told me.””

“I know.””

Richard looked at the documents.

“He was trying to build a stable life for you and Claire. He refused my money because he didn’t want you growing up believing he married Claire for her family’s wealth.””

That sounded exactly like my father.

Proud.

Stubborn.

The kind of man who would rather struggle than ask for help.

Richard continued.

“But I made a mistake.””

“What mistake?””

“I hired investigators.””

A chill went through me.

“You investigated my parents?””

“Yes.””

He didn’t avoid the truth.

“I wanted proof that Thomas could take care of my daughter.””

I stared at him.

“That’s horrible.””

“I know.””

The honesty surprised me.

“I was angry. I was afraid. And I convinced myself I was protecting Claire.””

His voice lowered.

“But I was controlling her.””

Nobody spoke.

I looked at Linda.

She looked almost relieved that he was admitting it.

“So what did you find?””

Richard looked at the papers.

“Nothing.””

“What?””

“Nothing.””

He shook his head.

“Thomas loved your mother. He loved you. He was a good man.””

I felt a strange ache in my chest.

My father.

The man who had raised me.

The man who had always protected me.

Suddenly, I wondered what else I didn’t know.

“Then why did you say he could lose me?””

Richard looked at me.

“Because after I discovered I was wrong, I tried to fix everything.””

“How?””

“I went to see Claire.””

My breath caught.

“When?””

“After you were born.””

I froze.

“You saw me?””

Richard’s eyes became glassy.

“Yes.””

A thousand questions rushed through my mind.

“You knew me?””

“I held you.””

My lips parted.

“You held me?””

He nodded.

“You were only three weeks old.””

I looked away.

My whole life, I had imagined my grandfather as a person who didn’t exist.

A blank space.

But he had been there.

He had held me.

“So why did I never know?””

Richard closed his eyes.

“Because when I arrived, Thomas told me Claire didn’t want me there.””

My heart stopped.

“My mother said that?””

“No.””

He looked at Linda.

“Someone told him that.””

The silence returned.

I looked at Linda.

She didn’t deny it.

Not immediately.

And that was enough.

“Linda.””

My voice was quiet.

“Did you tell my father?””

She looked uncomfortable.

“I was trying to protect everyone.””

“That’s not an answer.””

She looked at Richard.

Then back at me.

“Yes.””

The admission landed like a stone.

“I told Thomas that Richard would take legal action if he ever found out about you.””

I stared at her.

“You lied.””

“I was scared.””

“You lied.””

My voice became louder.

“You made my father believe my grandfather wanted to steal me.””

Linda’s eyes filled with tears.

“I thought Richard would destroy their life.””

Richard looked at her coldly.

“And instead, you destroyed mine.””

She looked down.

Nobody spoke.

Then I noticed something.

A small detail.

Something that had bothered me since Richard arrived.

“Wait.””

Everyone looked at me.

“If my father believed Richard wanted to take me…”

I looked at the agreement.

“Why did he sign a custody agreement?””

Richard hesitated.

That hesitation returned.

The one that told me there was still more.

“What aren’t you telling me?””

The assistant shifted uncomfortably.

Richard looked at him.

“Daniel.””

The assistant sighed.

“I’m sorry, Mr. Whitmore, but she has a right to know.””

My heart started beating faster.

Richard opened the folder again.

“There was another reason Thomas signed.””

“What reason?””

Richard pulled out another document.

This one was older.

The paper edges were worn.

He placed it in front of me.

I read the title.

*Medical Authorization and Emergency Guardianship Transfer.*

My face went cold.

“What is this?””

Richard’s voice became quiet.

“Your mother was sick.””

The room blurred.

“What?””

“Claire found out after you were born.””

My fingers froze over the page.

“What did she have?””

Richard looked devastated.

“She had a condition that doctors believed would eventually take her life.””

I swallowed.

My mother.

The woman who died when I was six.

The woman I thought I understood.

There was another secret.

“She knew?””

Richard nodded.

“She knew.””

“Then why didn’t she tell me?””

“Because she wanted you to have a normal childhood.””

I looked down.

Tears threatened to fall.

“So my father signed this because…”

Richard answered softly.

“Because Claire was afraid she wouldn’t be there to raise you.””

The words broke something inside me.

My mother hadn’t left me.

She had been preparing for a future without her.

I touched the paper.

And then I saw it.

A handwritten note attached to the document.

A note I hadn’t noticed before.

Three words written in my mother’s handwriting.

*For Emma, someday.*

My breathing stopped.

Richard saw it too.

“Emma…”

I slowly picked up the note.

My fingers shook.

I unfolded it.

The first line was enough to make tears fill my eyes.

*My sweet Emma, if you are reading this, it means the people I loved most finally stopped keeping secrets from you.*

I looked up.

But before I could read another word, the restaurant doors suddenly opened.

A woman in her forties rushed inside.

She looked terrified.

Her eyes found me immediately.

Then she whispered:

“Emma Carter?””

I stood frozen.

“Yes?””

The woman’s face crumpled.

“I’m sorry.””

She stepped closer.

“I was the one your mother trusted with the truth.””

My heart raced.

“Who are you?””

She looked at Richard.

Then at Linda.

And finally at me.

“My name is Sarah.””

May you like

She swallowed.

“And I know why your mother never wanted you to meet your grandfather.””
