Amused

Chapter 9: The Truth My Mother Hid

Nobody spoke.

My father stood in the doorway, soaked from the rain, looking less like the villain from my childhood memories and more like a man who had spent twenty years carrying a punishment he couldn’t escape.

But I couldn’t forget.

Not yet.

Not after everything.

“Who?”” I asked.

My voice was barely above a whisper.

“Who was she trying to expose?””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

She looked back at him.

And for the first time, I saw something between them that wasn’t fear.

Recognition.

They both knew something I didn’t.

“Marcus,” my father said.

I stepped forward.

“No.””

He stopped.

“No more half-truths.””

His eyes lowered.

“You’re right.””

“I spent my entire life believing one story.””

I pointed toward Maya.

“She spent hers believing another.””

My voice shook.

“And every person in this room knew pieces of the truth except me.””

Nobody argued.

“Tell me everything.””

Daniel nodded.

Then he walked inside.

Slowly.

Like he knew he didn’t deserve to be welcomed.

He looked at Maya.

“I’m sorry.””

Maya’s face stayed cold.

“You don’t get to say that and make twenty years disappear.””

“I know.””

“Do you?””

Her voice cracked.

“Do you know what it was like growing up thinking my own mother didn’t want me?””

Daniel looked away.

The pain on his face was real.

But real pain didn’t erase real damage.

“I know I failed you.””

Maya shook her head.

“No.””

She pointed at him.

“You abandoned me.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I did.””

The honesty surprised all of us.

He didn’t defend himself.

He didn’t blame anyone.

He just accepted it.

“I believed a lie,” he said.

Maya laughed bitterly.

“And that makes it better?””

“No.””

He looked at her.

“It makes it my fault.””

Silence.

Then I asked:

“Who lied to you?””

Daniel looked at the documents.

“Thomas Reed.””

I frowned.

“We already know Thomas was involved.””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You don’t understand.””

He looked at Maya.

“Thomas didn’t just manipulate me.””

He looked at me.

“He manipulated your mother too.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“What?””

“Denise trusted him.””

Daniel sat down.

“Everyone did.””

The rain continued outside.

“He was there when your grandfather died. He helped Denise manage the company. He became part of our family.””

Maya crossed her arms.

“And then?””

Daniel looked at her.

“He started stealing.””

“Money?””

“Yes.””

“How much?””

Daniel gave a tired smile.

“Enough that he believed nobody would ever find out.””

I looked at the documents.

“The trust.””

Daniel nodded.

“The trust was created to catch him.””

I stared.

“So Mom knew.””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t she tell me?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Because Thomas was watching you.””

A chill moved through me.

“What?””

“He knew you were the weak point.””

My anger rose.

“I’m not weak.””

Daniel looked at me sadly.

“I didn’t say you were.””

He paused.

“He knew you were the person your mother loved most.””

That hurt.

Because it sounded exactly like her.

Protective.

Quiet.

Always sacrificing herself.

“So what happened with Maya?””

Daniel looked at my sister.

And the guilt returned.

“I found out Thomas had been moving money through accounts connected to the company.””

“And Mom?””

“She confronted him.””

“Then?””

“Thomas told me Denise was planning to blame everything on me.””

Maya stared.

“And you believed him.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

His answer was quiet.

“Because he showed me fake evidence.””

I looked at him.

“What kind of evidence?””

“He showed me documents proving Denise had transferred company assets secretly.””

My eyes moved toward the paperwork.

“The fake will.””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“The will came later.””

He looked at the floor.

“Thomas had been planning this for years.””

Vanessa spoke for the first time.

“He used your father to remove Denise from the company.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

“And Maya?””

Daniel’s expression broke.

“That was the part I still don’t understand.””

“What do you mean?””

“Thomas told me Denise was going to send Maya away.””

Maya froze.

“He told you that?””

“Yes.””

Daniel looked at her.

“He said she was trying to protect the company and would use Maya as leverage.””

Maya’s eyes filled.

“He made you think Mom was the enemy.””

“Yes.””

“And you took me.””

Daniel looked down.

“I thought I was saving you.””

The room went quiet.

Maya wiped her face.

“You weren’t.””

“I know.””

“You weren’t protecting me.””

“I know.””

“You were scared.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

That answer seemed to hurt her more.

Because she didn’t want excuses.

She wanted the father she lost.

I looked at Vanessa.

“And you?””

She looked at me.

“What about me?””

“How does your family fit into this?””

Her expression changed.

“My father helped Thomas move the money.””

Daniel nodded.

“Richard Collins was the financial connection.””

“So Thomas was the mastermind.””

Daniel hesitated.

That hesitation bothered me.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“Thomas wasn’t alone.””

I felt cold.

“Who else?””

Daniel looked toward the window.

Then back at us.

“Someone inside your mother’s house.””

Nobody spoke.

My mind raced.

Someone close.

Someone trusted.

Someone who had access.

Then I remembered.

The message.

Ask your fiancée why she was there.

But Vanessa wasn’t the only person who had been close.

I thought about the funeral.

The visitors.

The documents.

The people who came and went after my mother died.

“Who?””

Daniel looked at the table.

At the documents.

“At first, I thought it was Vanessa.””

She looked down.

“But I was wrong.””

I exhaled.

“Then who?””

Daniel reached into his coat.

He pulled out an envelope.

My mother’s name was written on it.

I stared.

“Where did you get that?””

“Denise gave it to me.””

My heart stopped.

“When?””

“The night before she died.””

Nobody moved.

“You saw Mom?””

Daniel nodded.

“She called me.””

My anger returned.

“You saw her and didn’t tell me?””

“I was going to.””

“Then why didn’t you?””

His eyes filled.

“Because she died before I could.””

I didn’t know what to say.

He placed the envelope on the table.

“She told me if anything happened, I needed to give this to you.””

I looked at the handwriting.

My mother.

Again.

Another message.

Another secret.

I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

Marcus,

If Daniel is the one who gives you this, then I need you to understand something.

I stopped.

I looked at my father.

Then continued.

Your father made mistakes. Terrible ones.

But he was not the person who destroyed our family.

My chest tightened.

The person responsible has been close to all of us.

I turned the page.

Only one sentence remained.

Marcus, the person who betrayed me is the same person who arranged your entire relationship with Vanessa.

My hands froze.

Vanessa went pale.

“No.””

Maya looked at me.

“What does it say?””

I couldn’t speak.

Because the letter answered the question none of us wanted to ask.

I forced myself to read the final line.

I’m sorry I didn’t tell you sooner.

But I needed you to love her before you discovered who she really was.

The room went silent.

Vanessa looked at me.

“What?””

I looked at my mother’s handwriting.

Then at Vanessa.

My heart was racing.

Because the sentence didn’t accuse Vanessa.

It did something worse.

It suggested my mother knew Vanessa’s heart.

She knew the truth.

And she still let us meet.

I turned the page.

There was one final note.

A name.

Not Thomas.

Not Richard.

Not Daniel.

A name I recognized instantly.

A person who had comforted me after my mother died.

A person who had helped me with every legal document.

A person who had told me she wanted what was best for me.

My lawyer.

Thomas Reed.

No.

I looked closer.

Not Thomas.

Someone else.

Someone I never suspected.

Someone who had been there the entire time.

The signature at the bottom made my blood run cold.

*Denise Bennett’s final message was written by the person who betrayed her.*

And below it:

*Evelyn Reed.*

Thomas Reed’s wife.

The woman who held my hand at my mother’s funeral.

The woman who cried with me.

The woman who said:

“Your mother loved you more than anything.””

My phone buzzed.

A message appeared.

From Evelyn.

*Marcus, I know you found the letter.*

Another message.

*Before you judge me, you need to hear why Denise asked me to do it.*

I stared at the screen.

May you like

Then the final message arrived.

*Because your mother knew she was going to die.*
