Chapter 8: My Mother’s Final Game
For several seconds after the call ended, nobody moved.
The rain outside sounded like thousands of fingers tapping against the windows.
I stared at Vanessa.
She stared back.
But this time, I wasn’t seeing the woman who made me laugh when life felt heavy.
I was seeing every unanswered question.
Every strange conversation.
Every time she changed the subject when my mother’s name came up.
Every time she told me she hated secrets.
The irony almost made me laugh.
“Did she know?””
My voice was quiet.
Vanessa looked confused.
“Did your father tell the truth?””
Her lips parted.
“Marcus…”
“Did my mother know who you were?””
She looked down.
And that was enough.
I felt something inside me collapse.
“Answer me.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
Maya stepped back.
The word seemed to hit all of us.
“Yes,” Vanessa repeated.
“She knew.””
I stared at her.
“How long?””
“Before we met.””
My hands went numb.
“Before we met?””
Vanessa nodded.
“My father had already discovered you were her son.””
“And you still approached me.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I don’t know how to explain it without making it sound worse.””
“Try.””
She looked at me.
“My father wanted me to get close to you.””
I waited.
“He wanted access to your mother’s documents.””
“And you agreed.””
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt.
“But I didn’t know what I was walking into.””
Maya’s expression hardened.
“You expect us to believe that?””
Vanessa looked at her.
“No.””
The answer surprised us.
“No, I don’t.””
She wiped her face.
“If I were you, I wouldn’t believe me either.””
I looked away.
Because part of me hated how much I still wanted to.
That was the worst part.
Not the betrayal.
The fact that love didn’t disappear just because trust did.
“What did my mother do when she found out?””
Vanessa was silent.
Then she said:
“She invited me to dinner.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“She knew.””
“When?””
“Six months before she died.””
The room went completely still.
“She knew my father sent me.””
“And she said nothing?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
“Why?””
Vanessa looked at the photograph of my mother.
“Because your mother was smarter than all of us.””
Six months earlier.
Vanessa arrived at my mother’s house expecting anger.
She expected confrontation.
She expected Denise Bennett to throw her out.
Instead, my mother opened the door with a smile.
“Vanessa.””
The memory in Vanessa’s voice sounded almost painful.
“She knew my name before I introduced myself.””
I listened quietly.
“What happened?””
Vanessa looked down.
“She invited me inside.””
“Just like that?””
“Yes.””
Maya shook her head.
“That doesn’t sound like Mom.””
A small sad smile appeared on Vanessa’s face.
“It was exactly like your mother.””
She looked at Maya.
“She wasn’t weak. She wasn’t angry. She was calm.””
Vanessa continued.
“She made tea.””
I almost smiled.
That sounded like my mother.
Tea before difficult conversations.
Always.
“She sat across from me and said, ‘Your father must be very worried.’”
I frowned.
“What did you say?””
“I denied everything.””
“And she knew?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“She showed me the original documents.””
My heart skipped.
“The original will?””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“Something else.””
“What?””
“Evidence.””
Vanessa reached into her folder.
She pulled out a small envelope.
“I found this in my father’s office.””
Inside was a copy of a letter.
My mother’s handwriting.
Again.
But this time, the words weren’t addressed to me.
They were addressed to Vanessa.
Vanessa,
If you are reading this, then you already know the truth about your father.
My breath caught.
I know he sent you to me.
I know he asked you to get close to my son.
I looked at Vanessa.
“She knew everything.””
Vanessa nodded.
“I don’t understand.””
Neither did I.
My mother knew Vanessa was connected to the people who hurt our family.
Yet she welcomed her.
Why?
I kept reading.
But I also know you are not your father.
I stopped.
That was my mother.
Even when someone hurt her, she looked for the person underneath.
You have a choice.
You can continue protecting the people who used you.
Or you can help protect the people they tried to destroy.
I looked up.
“What did you choose?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“I chose wrong at first.””
Silence.
“Then I chose you.””
The words were quiet.
But they mattered.
“I stopped giving my father information.””
“Did he know?””
“Yes.””
“And then?””
“He threatened me.””
I looked at the documents.
“He threatened you because you stopped helping him.””
“Yes.””
Maya crossed her arms.
“So why didn’t you tell Marcus?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Because your mother asked me not to.””
I froze.
“What?””
“She told me not to tell you.””
“Why?””
Vanessa looked down.
“She said if you knew everything, you would try to fix it.””
I almost laughed.
Because she was right.
“That sounds like Mom.””
Vanessa nodded.
“She said you spent your whole life protecting people.””
My throat tightened.
“And she wanted you to have one person who protected you.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Maya whispered:
“She knew she was going to die.””
The sentence changed the air.
Vanessa looked at her.
“I think she did.””
I looked at the papers.
The hidden will.
The letters.
The evidence.
My mother wasn’t leaving behind a mystery.
She was leaving behind a plan.
A final move.
“What was she planning?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“She wanted everyone involved to reveal themselves.””
“How?””
“I don’t know.””
Maya looked through the documents.
Then suddenly stopped.
“Wait.””
Everyone looked at her.
“What?””
She held up a paper.
“This.””
It was a bank record.
A transfer.
A date.
The day after my mother died.
I looked closer.
A large payment.
From an unknown account.
To Thomas Reed.
My stomach tightened.
“He was paid after she died.””
Vanessa nodded.
“That’s not all.””
She pointed at the bottom.
Another name.
A company.
*Bennett Holdings Trust.*
I stared.
“What is that?””
Maya’s face changed.
“I don’t know.””
Then my phone buzzed.
A message.
From Thomas Reed.
Only one sentence.
*If you found the trust documents, you’re closer than I expected.*
Another message followed.
*But you need to understand something.*
A third.
*Your mother didn’t create the trust to protect you.*
I felt cold.
The final message appeared.
*She created it to trap the person who betrayed her.*
I looked at Maya.
At Vanessa.
At the evidence spread across the table.
Then I heard a sound.
A car door closing outside.
Everyone froze.
The house went silent.
Footsteps approached the front door.
Slow.
Deliberate.
Someone knew we were here.
Someone wasn’t trying to hide.
The doorknob turned.
Maya grabbed my arm.
Vanessa stood.
The door opened.
And the person standing there was the last person I expected to see.
My father.
Daniel Bennett.
Older.
Tired.
Broken.
But alive.
He looked at Maya first.
And tears filled his eyes.
“Twenty years.””
Maya stared at him.
“Why?””
His face collapsed.
“I spent twenty years trying to find you.””
Nobody moved.
Then Daniel looked at me.
“I know what your mother’s final move was.””
I stepped forward.
“Then tell me.””
He looked toward the documents.
Then at the hidden will.
Then at Vanessa.
And his expression changed.
Because he saw something I didn’t.
Fear.
“Marcus…”
His voice dropped.
“You need to know the person your mother was trying to expose…”
He looked directly at Vanessa.
“…is not Richard Collins.””
Vanessa went pale.
May you like
Daniel finished:
“It’s someone who has been standing beside you this entire time.””
