Chapter 7: The Document Hidden Beneath the Floor

"Mom!""

I shouted into the phone.

Nothing.

"Danielle!""

The call had disconnected.

I immediately dialed her number again.

Straight to voicemail.

Peter was still standing in my doorway.

He watched my face change.

"What happened?""

"My wife is at my sister's house. My mother is there too.""

Peter stepped forward.

"Did Derek go with her?""

"I don't know.""

I grabbed my keys.

Peter caught my arm.

"Listen to me. Don't go there alone if you think someone might be dangerous.""

I pulled away.

"My mother is seventy-two years old. My sister is in that house. I'm going.""

"I'm coming with you.""

We drove through the neighborhood as quickly as traffic allowed.

I called Danielle six more times.

Nothing.

I called my mother.

Nothing.

Finally, I called emergency services and explained that there had been a possible confrontation at my sister's address.

The dispatcher asked whether I had reason to believe anyone was injured.

"I heard my mother scream. Then the call disconnected.""

"Sir, officers are being dispatched. Please don't enter if you believe there's an immediate threat.""

I gripped the steering wheel.

Peter sat beside me, staring through the windshield.

"That's how Derek works," he said.

"What?""

"He creates confusion. He wants people frightened enough to make mistakes.""

I looked at him.

"Did he hurt anyone before?""

Peter nodded.

"Not physically, as far as I know. But he knows how to intimidate people. He makes them believe they have no choice.""

I turned onto Danielle's street.

A police cruiser was already outside her house.

I parked behind it and ran toward the front door.

An officer stepped in front of me.

"Sir, are you Marcus Carter?""

"Yes. My mother and sister are inside.""

"We're checking the situation.""

"Please. I heard screaming.""

The officer looked toward the house.

Another officer emerged from the hallway.

"Everyone is safe.""

My knees nearly gave way.

"Where are they?""

"Your mother is in the living room. Your sister is with another officer.""

I pushed past the doorway.

Mom was sitting on the sofa.

Her hair was disheveled.

One sleeve of her cardigan had been torn.

Danielle stood nearby, holding a wet towel against her forehead.

I rushed toward them.

"Mom!""

She reached for me.

"Baby.""

I wrapped my arms around her.

"Are you hurt?""

"No. I'm all right.""

I pulled back.

"Then what happened?""

Danielle answered.

"Nia came in without permission. She said she needed the property documents.""

I looked at my mother.

"Did she touch you?""

Mom shook her head.

"She grabbed my handbag.""

My sister continued.

"I tried to stop her. She pushed past me and knocked over the table.""

I looked at the broken lamp on the floor.

"What did she take?""

Danielle shook her head.

"Nothing. I had already hidden the papers.""

I exhaled.

Then I noticed something.

"Where is Nia?""

One of the officers approached.

"She left before we arrived. Your sister says she was accompanied by another man.""

"Derek?""

"She believes so.""

I looked at Danielle.

"Did you see him clearly?""

"Yes.""

"What did he do?""

"He stood by the front door. He didn't come inside. He kept telling Nia they needed to leave.""

Peter entered behind me.

The moment Danielle saw him, her eyes widened.

"You're Derek's brother.""

Peter nodded.

"I'm sorry you had to meet me under these circumstances.""

Danielle folded her arms.

"Why is your family involved in our lives?""

Peter lowered his eyes.

"Because my brother has spent years making other families pay for his mistakes.""

The officer asked everyone to remain available for statements.

While Danielle spoke with him, I sat beside my mother.

"Mom, why did Nia come here?""

Evelyn looked at her hands.

"She wanted Grandpa's document.""

"What document?""

"The one hidden at the cottage.""

I leaned closer.

"Do you know what's inside?""

She nodded.

"Your grandfather told me never to reveal it unless someone tried to take the property.""

I looked at Danielle.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because I didn't know what it was," my sister said.

"Mom only remembered after she saw the photograph Peter brought.""

I looked at Peter.

He pulled a chair closer.

"Derek told me about the document several months ago. He said it contained something that could make the cottage worth considerably more than its current market value.""

"What?""

Peter shook his head.

"He never explained. But he was obsessed with finding it.""

My mother closed her eyes.

"Your grandfather used to say the land was more important than the building.""

I frowned.

"What does that mean?""

She looked at me.

"There's something beneath the cottage.""

I stared at her.

"What?""

"A storage compartment. Your grandfather built it himself.""

I remembered the old cottage.

The uneven wooden floorboards.

The fireplace.

The small pantry where he kept canned peaches.

I had spent entire summers there as a boy.

But I had never heard about a hidden compartment.

"Where?""

Mom pointed toward the floor.

"Under the old pantry.""

Danielle spoke quietly.

"He told me once that there was something buried there. I thought he was joking.""

My phone vibrated.

Robert Hayes.

I answered.

"Robert.""

"Marcus, I received the documents Peter sent you. We need to speak immediately.""

"What's happening?""

"The title company confirmed that someone attempted to submit a transfer request involving your mother's property.""

"Was it approved?""

"No. The transaction was flagged because the original restriction remains active.""

I closed my eyes.

"Good.""

"But there's something else. The transfer request references an attached agreement dated before your grandfather died.""

I looked at my mother.

"What's in that agreement?""

"That's what I'm trying to determine. Do you know anything about a trust or mineral rights connected to the cottage?""

My mother gasped.

I turned toward her.

"Mom?""

She nodded slowly.

"Your grandfather never sold the land beneath the cottage.""

Robert continued.

"Marcus, the county records show that the property may contain a separately documented development interest. I need the original agreement before anyone attempts another transfer.""

My mother covered her mouth.

I stared at her.

"Mom, what is he talking about?""

She looked at me.

"Your grandfather discovered something years ago.""

"What?""

"He was approached by a development company. They wanted to purchase the land because of its location and access to an old underground utility corridor.""

I frowned.

"An underground corridor?""

"He refused to sell. He believed the land might become valuable when the surrounding area developed.""

I looked at Peter.

His expression had changed.

"That explains everything," he whispered.

I turned toward him.

"What?""

"Derek isn't trying to sell a cottage.""

Peter took out his phone and opened a map.

"He's been trying to acquire several properties near that area. There's a commercial redevelopment project planned nearby.""

I stared at the map.

The cottage was marked in red.

Several surrounding parcels were marked in blue.

Peter pointed to a document.

"If the land rights are connected, your grandfather's agreement could give the holder a significant financial interest in the redevelopment.""

My mouth went dry.

"How significant?""

"Potentially millions. But we'd need the original records and a qualified professional to establish exactly what rights exist.""

I looked at my mother.

She was crying.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

She shook her head.

"Your grandfather told me it wasn't something we needed to worry about. He said the property was protected.""

I took her hand.

"Mom, we're going to find the document.""

She nodded.

Then she said something quietly.

"There's one more thing.""

"What?""

"Your grandfather didn't put the agreement in my name.""

I frowned.

"Whose name is it in?""

She looked at Danielle.

My sister went completely still.

"Mine?"" Danielle whispered.

Mom nodded.

"Your grandfather put it in a sealed family trust. Danielle was named as the successor beneficiary.""

I stared at my sister.

Peter slowly sat back.

Suddenly, the forged witness document made sense.

Danielle wasn't merely an accidental witness.

She was the person who stood between Derek and the asset he wanted.

My phone vibrated again.

A message from an unknown number.

You have twenty-four hours to produce the original agreement. Otherwise, the people funding this transaction will assume your family has no intention of cooperating.

I showed it to Robert.

He called immediately.

"Marcus, don't respond to that message. Forward it to me. We're going to document every contact.""

"Can we go to the cottage?""

"Not until we establish whether anyone is monitoring the property.""

I looked at my mother.

She spoke before I could answer.

"Your grandfather gave me a key.""

She reached into her handbag.

A small brass key rested inside her palm.

"I kept it all these years.""

I stared at it.

The key was old, with a small blue ribbon tied around its handle.

"Mom, why didn't you mention this earlier?""

"Because I didn't think anyone would ever come looking for it.""

I took the key.

Then my phone rang.

The security company.

I answered.

"Mr. Carter, we're calling about unusual activity at your residence.""

My stomach tightened.

"What activity?""

"Someone entered the property approximately twelve minutes ago using a previously registered access credential.""

"Who?""

The operator paused.

"The account identifies the person as Nia Carter.""

I looked at Danielle.

Then at my mother.

Nia had left my sister's house.

And now she was inside ours.

May you like

But the next sentence made my blood run cold.

"Sir, the individual appears to be accessing your home safe.""
