Chapter 7: The Woman I Used To Be
The hardest part about betrayal wasn’t discovering what Daniel did.
It was discovering who I became because of it.
For years, I thought I was a strong person.
I worked hard.
I supported my husband.
I handled problems.
I was the person everyone called when something went wrong.
But after Daniel, I barely recognized myself.
I stopped sleeping.
I checked every email twice.
Every phone call made my heart race.
Every unknown number felt like another secret waiting to destroy me.
Olivia noticed before I admitted it.
“You’re disappearing,” she told me.
We were sitting on my apartment balcony one rainy evening.
“I’m right here.””
She shook her head.
“No, you’re not.””
I looked away.
The rain fell against the railing.
“I don’t know who I am anymore.””
Olivia reached across the table.
“You’re Emily.””
I laughed softly.
“That’s not enough.””
“It is.””
I looked at her.
She continued.
“Daniel made you believe your value came from being his wife.””
My eyes filled.
“But I was his wife.””
“Yes.””
She squeezed my hand.
“But you were Emily before him.””
That sentence stayed with me.
Because I realized something.
Daniel hadn’t just betrayed my marriage.
He had convinced me that my identity depended on keeping it alive.
A week later, the financial investigation uncovered more.
Michael called me into his office.
He placed several documents in front of me.
“Daniel moved money into a separate account.””
I looked through the pages.
“And Vanessa?””
Michael shook his head.
“She didn’t know.””
I believed him.
The more I learned, the clearer it became.
Daniel had lied to everyone.
Not because he was trapped.
Because he wanted control.
“Why would he do this?”” I asked.
Michael leaned back.
“Some people don’t want to leave a situation.””
He paused.
“They want to win it.””
That word stayed with me.
Win.
Like our marriage had been a competition.
Like I was an opponent.
Not a partner.
Then Daniel showed up again.
This time, he wasn’t angry.
He looked desperate.
“Emily, please talk to me.””
I stayed by the doorway.
“What do you want?””
“I want to fix this.””
I almost smiled.
“Fix what?””
He looked confused.
“Everything.””
I shook my head.
“You don’t want to fix everything.””
His expression changed.
“What does that mean?””
“You want to fix the consequences.””
He went silent.
Because it was true.
“You’re not sorry you hurt me,” I said.
“I am.””
“You’re sorry people found out.””
His face hardened.
“That’s not fair.””
I stared at him.
“You keep saying that.””
He looked away.
“Because it isn’t.””
“No.””
I opened the door wider.
“It isn’t fair.””
I pointed outside.
“Fair would have been telling me the truth before you planned a new life.””
His eyes filled with frustration.
“I was unhappy too.””
The words hit me.
But this time, they didn’t break me.
“Then you should have left.””
He looked at me.
“You make it sound easy.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I make it sound honest.””
For the first time, Daniel looked small.
Not powerful.
Not in control.
Just a man watching the consequences of his choices arrive.
Before leaving, he stopped.
“There’s something you don’t know.””
I felt my body tense.
“What?””
He swallowed.
“The company apartment.””
I waited.
“What about it?””
His voice lowered.
“It wasn’t bought for me and Vanessa.””
I frowned.
“Then who was it for?””
He looked at me.
And the answer made no sense.
“You.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“I was going to give it to you.””
I laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was absurd.
“You cheated on me, hid money from me, forged my signature…”
I stepped closer.
“And now you want me to believe it was all for me?””
“I made mistakes.””
“Mistakes?””
My voice became quiet.
“No, Daniel.””
I shook my head.
“You made choices.””
After he left, I sat alone.
The apartment.
The documents.
The lies.
Everything felt impossible.
Then Michael called again.
This time, his voice sounded different.
“Emily.””
“What happened?””
“We found the original agreement.””
My heart started pounding.
“What original agreement?””
“The one Daniel used your signature on.””
I waited.
“And Emily?””
“Yes?””
“There’s something written in the final clause.””
“What does it say?””
A pause.
May you like
Then:
“It says Daniel was supposed to transfer ownership of everything to you if he ever cheated.””
