Amused

Chapter 3: The Life He Built Without Me

The next morning, I drove past the apartment.

I don’t know why.

Maybe because some part of me needed proof.

Proof that the place existed.

Proof that my husband had built another life while I was still living inside the old one.

The building was beautiful.

Glass windows.

A rooftop balcony.

The kind of place Daniel and I used to dream about owning someday.

I parked across the street and watched.

Then I saw her.

Vanessa.

She walked through the entrance carrying coffee.

A few minutes later, Daniel joined her.

They looked comfortable.

That was the part that hurt.

Not angry.

Not secretive.

Comfortable.

Like they had already moved into a future I didn’t know existed.

I went home and found a letter from my lawyer.

I had never hired one before.

But after finding those documents, I knew I needed someone on my side.

The meeting was at noon.

My lawyer, Sarah, read through everything carefully.

“Emily, I need you to understand something.””

I looked up.

“What?””

“Your husband has been moving assets.””

My stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?””

“It means he may have been preparing financially before asking for divorce.””

I stared at the paperwork.

The affair was one wound.

This was another.

“How much?””

Sarah hesitated.

“That depends on what we find.””

After the meeting, I went home and started looking through everything.

Every account.

Every email.

Every file.

I found things I never knew existed.

A new credit card.

A storage unit.

A second phone bill.

Daniel had created an entire hidden world.

And I had been living in the visible one.

That evening, my sister Olivia came over.

She found me sitting on the bedroom floor surrounded by papers.

“Oh, Emily.””

That was all she said.

And somehow that was enough.

I cried.

Not the angry tears from the night before.

The exhausted ones.

“I don’t understand how someone can do this.””

Olivia sat beside me.

“Because you’re thinking like someone who loves him.””

I looked at her.

“And he’s thinking like someone protecting himself.””

Her words stayed with me.

The next week became a battle.

Daniel called.

Texted.

Appeared at places where he knew I would be.

One afternoon, he showed up at the house.

“You’re making this ugly,” he said.

I looked at him.

“You brought another woman into our bedroom.””

“I said I was sorry.””

“No. You said it meant nothing.””

His face hardened.

“Emily, I made mistakes.””

“Mistakes are forgetting an anniversary. Mistakes are buying the wrong gift.””

I stepped closer.

“This was a series of choices.””

He looked angry now.

That surprised me.

Somehow, he was frustrated that I was no longer accepting his version of events.

“I’m not the villain here.””

I almost laughed.

“Really?””

“Yes.””

He pointed at me.

“You stopped being happy years ago.””

The words hit me.

Because they were designed to make me question myself.

Maybe I had changed.

Maybe I had become distant.

Maybe I had failed too.

But then I remembered.

I wasn’t the one who cheated.

I wasn’t the one who prepared documents behind his wife’s back.

That night, I received an email.

From an unknown sender.

The subject line was simple.

“Before you blame yourself, read this.””

My hands shook as I opened it.

There was one attachment.

A photograph.

Daniel.

Vanessa.

And another person.

Someone I recognized immediately.

Someone who was supposed to be helping me.

May you like

The email contained only one sentence.

“Your husband wasn’t planning to leave you alone.””
