Chapter 9: The Truth We Buried
I followed the shadow outside.
But whoever it was disappeared before I reached the parking lot.
Only one thing remained.
A small envelope placed on my windshield.
Inside was a photograph.
Me.
Standing outside a hospital.
Holding a baby.
I looked at the date.
Twenty years earlier.
That was impossible.
I had never held a baby before Leo.
At least…
That was what I believed.
Behind the photo was a note.
*Ask your mother.*
My own mother had been dead for five years.
But my father was still alive.
And suddenly, I wondered what secrets my family had been protecting.
I drove straight to his house.
When he opened the door, he immediately knew.
“You found out.””
I froze.
“You knew?””
My father looked exhausted.
“I hoped you never would.””
My voice shook.
“What happened?””
He stepped aside.
“Come in.””
For the first time in years, I saw fear in my father’s eyes.
He sat at the kitchen table.
“Before you were born, your mother and I struggled to have children.””
I listened.
“We adopted.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“You were adopted.””
The room went silent.
“No.””
“Yes.””
I stared at him.
“Then why did you never tell me?””
“Because your mother was afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
He looked at the photograph.
“Of losing you.””
My hands shook.
“How does this connect to Leo?””
My father sighed.
“Your biological parents were Sarah’s parents’ friends.””
I couldn’t process it.
“What?””
“You and Michael Voss were brothers.””
The world tilted.
“Brothers?””
He nodded.
“Half-brothers.””
Everything crashed together.
The twin children.
The family secrets.
The lies.
Michael wasn’t just a stranger.
He was family.
“And Ethan?””
My father looked down.
“He was Michael’s son.””
I stood.
“So Ethan is my nephew?””
“Yes.””
I walked outside.
My entire life felt like a story someone else wrote.
But there was one thing I couldn’t understand.
Why did Ethan pretend to be Leo?
When I returned to Emma’s house, Leo was gone.
My heart stopped.
“Mia?””
She ran downstairs crying.
“Daddy!””
I grabbed her.
“Where is Leo?””
She pointed outside.
“He said someone needed him.””
My blood went cold.
“Who?””
She whispered:
“Grandma.””
I called Detective Harris.
Within minutes, we tracked Elina’s location.
An abandoned church outside town.
The same place where Sarah had been hidden.
When we arrived, the doors were open.
Inside, I saw Elina.
And beside her…
Ethan.
He looked exactly like Leo.
But older.
His eyes were different.
Filled with anger.
Leo stood between them.
“Daddy!””
I ran forward.
But Ethan stepped in front of him.
“You took everything from me.””
I stopped.
“Ethan.””
He laughed.
“You don’t even know my name.””
“I know enough.””
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“You know nothing.””
Elina watched silently.
Then Ethan looked at me.
“Do you know what Grandma told me?””
I didn’t answer.
“She told me I was the forgotten child.””
His fists tightened.
“She told me Leo got the family. The house. The father.””
I looked at Leo.
Then back at Ethan.
“That wasn’t true.””
Ethan smiled sadly.
“Wasn’t it?””
Before I could answer, police entered.
Everyone froze.
And then Elina whispered something that changed everything.
“Tell him the truth, David.””
I turned.
“What?””
She smiled.
“You were the reason Ethan disappeared.””
My blood ran cold.
“What are you talking about?””
Elina looked at Ethan.
“Your father chose you.””
Then she looked at me.
“And Michael blamed you.””
The room went silent.
Because suddenly…
May you like
I wasn’t just searching for the person who hurt my son.
I was searching for the truth about myself.
