Chapter 7: The Man in the Photograph

The police took Sarah to a private interview room.

Not as a prisoner.

Not yet.

But nobody treated her like my wife anymore.

Not after everything.

I sat across from her with my hands locked together.

I wanted answers.

But I didn’t know which question to ask first.

Why did you leave me?

Why did you let me think you were dead?

Why was our son hidden beneath our house?

Why was another man in that photograph?

Finally, I spoke.

“Start from the beginning.””

Sarah looked down.

“I was never supposed to survive the accident.””

My jaw tightened.

“What accident?””

She looked at me.

“The one Elina told you killed me.””

The room felt colder.

“She lied?””

Sarah nodded.

“She changed the records. She paid someone at the hospital.””

My hands curled into fists.

“Why?””

“Because she wanted control.””

Sarah’s eyes filled with tears.

“She always wanted a perfect family.””

“She already had one.””

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“She wanted one she could create.””

I listened silently.

“After I lost my pregnancy, Elina became obsessed with giving me another child. She said I deserved a second chance.””

My stomach turned.

“She knew about Leo?””

Sarah nodded.

“She knew everything.””

“What does that mean?””

Sarah took a deep breath.

“Leo wasn’t born the way you think.””

I stared at her.

“Explain.””

She looked terrified.

“Before Leo was born, I found out there was a mistake at the fertility clinic.””

My heart began racing.

“A mistake?””

“There were two embryos.””

I said nothing.

Sarah continued.

“One was mine and yours. The other belonged to another couple.””

I felt the room spin.

“No.””

“I found out after Leo was born.””

She looked at the floor.

“Another baby had been born that same day.””

The photograph.

The two babies.

I understood.

“Elina knew.””

“Yes.””

My voice became quiet.

“She knew there was another child.””

Sarah nodded.

“And she used it.””

The door opened.

Detective Harris stepped inside.

“We found the man in the photo.””

Sarah froze.

“Where?””

“He’s at the station.””

My heart jumped.

“Who is he?””

Harris looked at Sarah.

“His name is Michael Voss.””

Sarah closed her eyes.

I saw recognition.

Fear.

“You know him.””

She didn’t answer.

“Sarah.””

Her voice was barely a whisper.

“He was the other baby’s father.””

I stood.

“The other baby?””

Harris placed a folder on the table.

“We confirmed the records.””

He opened it.

“Leo has a biological twin.””

My eyes moved across the papers.

The DNA results.

The names.

Everything I had spent months trying to understand.

The missing child.

The hidden room.

The fake death.

It all connected.

But one thing didn’t.

“If Leo has a twin…”

I looked at Sarah.

“Where is he?””

Nobody answered.

Then Sarah whispered:

“He’s been closer than you think.””

A chill moved through me.

“What does that mean?””

Sarah looked toward the window.

“He was raised believing he was your son.””

My blood froze.

Detective Harris slowly closed the folder.

“David…”

I looked at him.

“What?””

He hesitated.

Then said:

“Mia’s biological brother has been living in your house for eight months.””

I stared.

“No.””

Sarah began crying.

“He replaced Leo.””

The words felt impossible.

The world disappeared around me.

Then my phone rang.

I looked down.

A message.

From an unknown number.

A photo appeared.

It was Leo.

Standing in the backyard.

May you like

But beneath it was a message:

*Wrong child.*
